The Twins released Thornburg on Sunday.
Thornburg was one of three veteran relievers with prior MLB experience whom the Twins cut loose Sunday, with Juan Minaya and Ben Heller also receiving their walking papers. The 33-year-old right-hander turned in a 5.65 ERA and 1.63 WHIP across 14.1 innings at Triple-A St. Paul this season.

Thornburg's contract was selected from Triple-A St. Paul on Sunday, Megan Ryan of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
He struck out five while giving up three hits and zero walks over three innings in two appearances with the Saints. Thornburg is capable of working as a multi-inning reliever and is well-rested, having last pitched June 8.

Braves' Tyler Thornburg: Signs with Atlanta
Thornburg (elbow) signed a one-year, $900,000 contract with Atlanta on Wednesday.
Thornburg made seven relief appearances for the Reds in 2020 but underwent Tommy John surgery in September of that year and was sidelined for the entire 2021 campaign. The right-hander will now have a chance to carve out a middle-relief role with Atlanta during spring training in 2022.

Thornburg underwent Tommy John surgery this week, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Thornburg saved 13 games while posting a 2.15 ERA for the Brewers back in 2016, but it's been a brutal few years for him since then. He's now undergoing his second major surgery in the last four seasons after going through thoracic outlet surgery back in 2017. He's been limited to just 49.2 innings over the last three years, struggling to a 6.16 ERA. The timing of his latest surgery means he'll miss the entirety of the 2021 season. While he should be ready to go around Opening Day of 2022, he'll be a 33-year-old at that point whose last good season came six years earlier.
