  • Rockies' Charlie Blackmon: Expected to be primary DH

Blackmon is expected to serve as the Rockies' primary designated hitter in 2024, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.

Blackmon signed a one-year, $13 million extension with the Rockies just before the close of the 2023 campaign. Given that financial commitment, he's expected to keep a significant role on the team. Blackmon has stated a desire to play regularly in right field, but manager Bud Black is prioritizing carefully managing the veteran's workload.

  • Rockies' Charlie Blackmon: Signs one-year extension

The Rockies signed Blackmon to a one-year contract extension Friday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.

Blackmon had been scheduled to become a free agent this winter at age 37, but he'll stay in Colorado for what will be his 14th major-league season. He was selected by the Rockies in the second round of the 2008 MLB Draft out of Georgia Tech and has tallied 1,688 career big-league hits, all in the purple and black. The new one-year deal carries a $13 million guarantee with another $2 million available in performance-based incentives, per Steve Adams of MLBTradeRumors.com.

The 37-year-old has hit .268 (22-for-82) in September, and his homer Thursday was his first of the month. He's up to eight long balls, 40 RBI, 56 runs scored, three steals, 24 doubles and a .283/.370/.451 slash line through 93 games this season.

He's tallied two hits in each of his last four games, a tally that includes three doubles, a triple, two RBI and four runs scored. The majority of that production came at Coors Field -- the team began a six-game road trip Monday -- and Blackmon has maintained just a .696 OPS away from home this season.

  • Rockies' Charlie Blackmon: Pops sixth homer

Blackmon went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and two runs scored Saturday against the White Sox.

Blackmon has a hit in each of his five starts since returning from a hand injury, and his long ball in the seventh inning was his second extra-base hit in that span. All five of those contests have taken place at Coors Field, though Blackmon has still successfully returned to the field following a two-month absence. He should continue to be a source of runs scored and a decent batting average down the stretch as he remains locked into the leadoff role in Colorado.

  • Rockies' Charlie Blackmon: Hitting well since return

Blackmon went 1-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI on Friday against the White Sox.

Blackmon has at least one hit in all four games since returning from a hand injury, and he's reached base multiple times in each of his three starts. The Rockies have plenty of candidates for at-bats between designated hitter and the outfield, though Blackmon still looks to be in line for a consistent role and has occupied the leadoff spot upon his activation.
