Charlie Furbush: Hangs it up
Furbush announced his retirement from baseball Thursday, Glenn Jordan of the Press Herald reports.
Furbush has been out of baseball since the 2016 season when he appeared in six games for Triple-A Tacoma. He spent five years in the major leagues across stops in Detroit and Seattle and will finish with a career 3.97 ERA along with 268 punchouts across 260.2 frames.

Charlie Furbush: Declines outright assignment Friday
Furbush (shoulder) elected free agency Friday, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Furbush was outrighted to Triple-A on Wednesday, but given his recent success in the major leagues, he decided to test the market for a major league deal. His most recent stint in the Mariners bullpen resulted in a 2.08 ERA and a 3.4 K/BB, so he very well could land a major league deal with a team willing to help him complete his rehab process from the rotator cuff surgery he underwent in August.

Furbush was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday.
This amounts to a paper move to remove Furbush from the 60-day DL while keeping him off the 40-man roster. Furbush faces a lengthy recovery after undergoing rotator cuff surgery in mid-August. He is targeting 2018 for a return to action.

Furbush will undergo rotator cuff surgery next Tuesday, and will target 2018 for his return.
The recovery time for this surgery typically lasts anywhere between 12-to-18 months, so Furbush will be looking to come back during spring training in 2018. The 30-year-old was trying to make a comeback for later this season, but with lingering shoulder soreness that constantly created more and more setbacks, he decided that surgery was a necessity. Furbush opened this season on the disabled list and will face a long road back to the majors after spending two years off the mound.

Mariners' Charlie Furbush: Throws bullpen Tuesday
Furbush (shoulder) threw a 35-pitch bullpen Tuesday, and is scheduled to toss live batting practice Saturday, Shannon Drayer of MyNorthwest.com reports.
Furbush opened the season on the disabled list after dealing with shoulder issues since July of 2015 when he partially tore his rotator cuff. He tossed a simulated inning last Thursday, but had his recovery placed on hold due to shoulder soreness that was present shortly after. Furbush said that he felt great after Tuesday's bullpen and could return to the team by the end of the week barring any more setbacks.

Furbush (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on Wednesday.
Furbush has been dealing with shoulder issues ever since he partially tore his rotator cuff in July 2015. He started the season on the disabled list and suffered a setback in his recovery at the end of May. There is still no timetable for his return. Furbush was moved to the 60-day disabled list to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

Furbush was able to throw a successful bullpen session earlier in the week and he'll progress to a simulated outing Saturday. Given the length of time Furbush has been on the shelf, he may need a few more simulated games and bullpen sessions before the Mariners send him out for a rehab assignment.

Furbush (shoulder) threw a successful bullpen session Wednesday and is expected to begin facing live hitters next week, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
Furbush is still without a firm timetable, but the 30-year-old is expected to head to Tacoma next week, and if all goes well he'll then return to the team's facility in Arizona to begin rebuilding arm strength. At this point, Furbush returning sometime in mid-June seems fairly realistic, but the club will handle his rehab on a more intensive basis.
