The Mets are likely to add “one or two players on major league deals” before spring training begins, according to Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com.

Rubin spoke to GM Sandy Alderson, who told him that the team will add talent before the spring. The Mets are the only team this offseason that hasn’t signed a major league free agent. Since Alderson has joined the team, they haven’t made any big-ticket free-agent signings. Frank Francisco has been the highest paid free agent during the Alderson era, as Rubin points out. Francisco was signed to a two-year, $12 million deal before the 2011 season.

Alderson has been limited by the Mets’ payroll issues over the past couple of seasons, but he did offer a reason for optimism. The Mets are expected to cut some big contracts following the upcoming season, which could give them more freedom on the market. Johan Santana will make $25.5 million in the last year of his contract, and the team still owes Jason Bay of Seattle a little over $18 million next season.
