The Dodgers have acquired utility man Skip Schumaker from the Cardinals, a source tells Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times. Schumaker must still pass a physical before the trade is finalized. In return, the Cardinals will receive minor-league shortstop Jake Lemmerman.
The 32-year-old Schumaker is a career .288/.345/.377 hitter across parts of eight major-league seasons. In 2012, he batted .276/.339/.368 in 107 games. He's no one's idea of a marquee addition, but Schumaker has solid on-base skills against right-handers and the ability to man all three outfield positions and second base. Schumaker is under contract for 2013 at $1.5 million and will then be eligible for free agency.
As for Lemmerman, the 23-year-old infielder was a 2010 fifth-rounder out of Duke. In parts of three minor-league seasons, he's a career .285/.377/.448 hitter. He projects as no better than a major-league reserve.
