Cardinals pitcher Jake Westbrook stopped his bullpen session on Saturday morning after just a few pitches, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Derrick Goold.

The 34-year-old pitcher injured his oblique injury during his Sept. 8 start and was expected to return during the final week of the season. He aggravated that injury during his bullpen session, and admitted that it would be “hard to imagine” making another start before the end of the season.

In 174 2/3 innings this season, Westbrook has a 3.97 ERA and a 3.82 FIP. He has one year left on his contract and will remain with the Cardinals next season. He’s scheduled to make $8.75 million in 2013.
