Former Rockies, Angels and Athletics closer Brian Fuentes has retired, the Merced Sun-Star reported Wednesday (via Jane Lee of MLB.com on Twitter).
Fuentes converted 204 saves and appeared in 650 games for his career, recording a 3.62 ERA (128 ERA+) across his 12 seasons. He spent the bulk of his career in Colorado, recording a franchise record 115 saves over seven seasons. In his first and only season as an Angel, Fuentes mustered a league-leading 48 saves despite a 3.93 ERA.
Fuentes suffered a swift fall in 2012, posting a 7.20 ERA between 14 appearances in Oakland and St. Louis, allowing six home runs and just a 1.2 K/BB. The 37-year-old likely would have had to settle for a minor league deal and compete for a job in spring training if he had desired a return to baseball in 2013.
