The Rays have placed left-hander David Price on the 15-day DL with a left triceps strain, the team announced. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner left Wednesday night's start with triceps tightness.

Price, 27, is visiting the DL for the first time in his career. He'd thrown at least 200 innings every year since becoming a full-time big leaguer in 2010. An elbow issue sidelined him for close to two months in the minors back in 2008.

Although he's gone 1-4 with a 5.24 ERA in his first nine starts, Price remains one of the best left-handed pitchers in baseball. After trading away James Shields during the offseason, Tampa Bay is without the only two opening-day starters they've used since 2008.

Left-hander Alex Torres was recalled to fill Price's roster spot for the time being. The Rays are likely to call up right-hander Jake Odorizzi to fill the rotation spot once it comes around on Monday. The 23-year-old is lined up to pitch that day and has a 3.83 ERA in Triple-A. He was part of the trade return for Shields.
