R.A. Dickey passes physical, trade to Blue Jays finalized

The drawn-out process is finally concluded. R.A. Dickey has passed his physical and agreed to a contract extension with the Blue Jays, the club announced Monday. This finalizes a trade that had been extremely visable in the media since Friday afternoon. The extension is for three years and $29 million, with a $12 million club option for 2016.

The drawn-out process is finally concluded. R.A. Dickey has passed his physical and agreed to a contract extension with the Blue Jays, the club announced Monday. This finalizes a trade that had been extremely visable in the media since Friday afternoon.

The extension is for three years and $29 million, with a $12 million club option for 2016. That club option has a $1 million buyout, so Dickey's deal is essentially worth $30 million total. The breakdown is that Dickey will make $5 million next season, $12 million in 2014, $12 million in 2015. Also, Dickey will donate $300,000 of the contract to charity.

Heading to the Blue Jays: 2012 NL Cy Young winner Dickey, catcher Josh Thole and catcher Mike Nickeas.

Dickey, 38, was 20-6 with a 2.73 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 230 strikeouts in 233 2/3 innings last season, when he was the first knuckleballer to win a Cy Young.

Thole, 26, hit .234/.294/.290 with one homer, 21 RBI and 24 runs in 354 plate appearances for the Mets last season. He is a solid defensive catcher, though, so he's fine as a big-league backup.

Nickeas, 29, hit .174/.242/.229 with one homer, 13 RBI and eight runs in 122 plate appearances for the Mets last season.

Heading to the Mets: Catcher John Buck, top-flight catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud, minor-league pitcher Noah Syndergaard and minor-league outfielder Wuilmer Becerra.

Buck, 32, hit .192/.297/.347 with 12 homers, 41 RBI and 29 runs in 398 plate appearances for the Marlins last season. This is the second time he's been traded this offseason, with the first being part of the deal that sent Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle and Josh Johnson to the Blue Jays.

D'Arnaud, 23, hit .333/.380/.595 with 16 homers, 52 RBI, 45 runs and 21 doubles in just 67 games last season for Triple-A Las Vegas. He entered the season as a top-20 prospect in all of baseball and is the obvious centerpiece for the Mets.

Syndergaard, 20, is a 6-foot-5 right-hander who the Blue Jays took 38th overall in the 2010 draft. He was 8-5 with a 2.60 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 122 strikeouts in 103 2/3 innings last season for Class-A Lansing. He provides the Mets with a second legitimate piece in return for Dickey.

Becerra, 18, hit .250/.359/.375 in only 11 games in Rookie ball last season, so he's obviously a long-term prospect.
