The Dodgers are showing interested in Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan, but they have a little company. The Red Sox are said to have an interest as well.

The Dodgers are a potential match because they have more starting pitchers than anyone --  veterans Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang are available.

While the Pirates aim to add a starting pitcher, a Red Sox package might instead feature multiple players, including a young pitcher. Pittsburgh needs one starting pitcher, as it expects to find a fourth starter internally from a list that includes veteran James McDonald, who started strong last year but tailed off in the second half.

Sources suggest the Dodgers are considering a variety of relievers, and could also make a play for either Indians closer Chris Perez or Mets reliever Bobby Parnell instead. The Dodgers would prefer a left-hander, but many of their best choices appear to be right-handers -- including Hanrahan, Perez and Parnell.

The Pirates are willing to consider trading Hanrahan, as they have re-signed Jason Grilli, who could close. The bullpen has been a Pirates strength in recent years.

Hanrahan, an established closer, would be a major boon for a Dodgers bullpen that already has two potential closers in Brandon League and Kenley Jansen. Hanrahan was 5-2 with 36 saves and a 2.72 ERA in making his second straight All-Star game last year.
