News from around the league this Thursday:

  • The Brewers designated George Kottaras for assignment Thursday, but chances are the catcher will be dealt before the waiver process completes in 10 days. General manager Doug Melvin hopes a deal will be done in the next day or two, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported.
  • The Angels released right-hander Trevor Bell from their Triple-A Sacramento affiliate, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday. Bell was a first-round pick in 2005 but never sustained success in the major leagues, with a 5.21 ERA in 52 games (11 starts). Bell had an 8.27 ERA and 24 walks against 19 strikeouts in 37 innings at Triple-A before his release.
  • The Twins placed Anthony Swarzak on the disabled list with a rotator cuff strain, the club announced Thursday. Swarzak will be replaced on the roster by Luis Perdomo, who has a 2.14 ERA in 59 relief innings this season. Pedromo pitched in 68 games for the Padres between 2009 and 2010, posting a 4.87 ERA and a 1.8 K/BB.
