The Giants have placed Brad Penny on the disabled list with a sore shoulder and recalled reliever Dan Otero, Alex Pavlovic of the Bay Area News Group reported Tuesday.

Penny has appeared in 15 games with the Giants, throwing 21 innings with a 6.86 ERA. He has lost his ability to miss bats, as he has just six strikeouts and a 6.1% swinging strike rate, well below the league average for relievers.

Otero, 27, made his MLB debut with the Giants earlier this year, posting an 8.64 ERA in his first 8.1 innings. However, Otero has a stellar 5.8 K/BB and a 2.83 ERA at Triple-A Fresno this year. If he is to succeed in the majors he'll need to replicate his excellent control at the top level of the sport. He walked just one batter per nine innings at Fresno this season.
