Diamondbacks agree to terms with 3B Eric Chavez for one year, $3M

The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to terms with free-agent third baseman Eric Chavez on a one-year, $3 million deal, reports CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to terms with free-agent third baseman Eric Chavez on a one-year, $3 million deal, reports CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman.

Chavez, 34, hit .281/.348/.496 with 16 homers in only 278 at-bats last season for the Yankees.

In Chris Johnson, the D-Backs already have a starting third baseman. Chavez can also play first, but Paul Goldschmidt has that position on lockdown, so Chavez appears ticketed for either a bench or part-time role. Note that he is left-handed while both Johnson and Goldschmidt are righties.

Also of note: The Diamondbacks still have a gaping hole at shortstop as the Justin Upton-for-shortstop rumors continue to swirl.

And one final note: With Jeff Keppinger and now Chavez off the board, the Yankees' options for a short-term replacement for injured Alex Rodriguez at third base continue to dwindle.
