Top 2024 Open Championship predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Open Championship: Rory McIlroy (13-2), the 2014 Open Championship winner and one of the top favorites, stumbles and doesn't even crack the top five. McIlroy's 10-year major championship drought is well documented, which made his mishaps down the stretch of the U.S. Open even more painful. He missed multiple putts within four feet in the final three holes, leading to a brutal runner-up finish.
It is going to be difficult for McIlroy to overcome those lingering emotions in the final major of the year, especially since the Open Championship brings its own unique pressure for the Northern Irishman. He has finished outside the top 40 in two of his last four appearances at this tournament, and he did not crack the top 10 at the Masters or PGA Championship earlier this season. Another surprise: Tommy Fleetwood, a 21-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Fleetwood has been one of the most consistent golfers on the PGA Tour so far this season, missing the cut just once while posting five straight top-30 finishes.
The 33-year-old Brit has a reputation for contending at difficult courses, using his tee-to-green play to separate himself from other golfers. Fleetwood has three top-10 finishes in his last four Open Championship appearances, including a runner-up finish in 2019 and a T4 in 2022. He finished T3 at the 2024 Masters, T26 at the 2024 PGA Championship and T16 at the 2024 U.S. Open, so the model likes his chances of breaking through with his first major win at Royal Troon.
