2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am leaderboard, grades: Justin Rose outlasts challengers, weather delay for win

On a week that felt like it would go on forever, Justin Rose ultimately entered the winner's circle at the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Claiming his first PGA Tour victory in four years, Rose signed for rounds of 69-69-65-66 to reach 18 under and successfully fended off a charging Brendon Todd and Denny McCarthy.

Rose began the final round with a one-stroke lead but immediately found trouble with a bogey on the opening hole. Relinquishing his lead, the Englishman steadied the ship with a birdie on his following hole before finishing Nos. 6-7 in a combined five strokes to push ahead. Pars on his next two holes rounded out Rose's Sunday as he returned to competition on Monday to an approach shot from the 10th fairway.

After a sound sleep on a two-stroke lead, Rose looked like his old self on the inward half on Monday. Carding three birdies over the course of his final nine holes, the former world No. 1 raced away from the field right as the competition had tightened.

"Time flies by, doesn't it? It's amazing how long it's been ... This is just a moment to say thanks to the people that believe in me probably more than I do," said Rose. "My team has been incredible. Obviously, my family at home...this one is for you guys. I wish you were here at Pebble with me. I mean what a place to win a tournament, unbelievable. To my squad, there have been a lot of people to rally around me and just had an unbelievable week."

Good for a three-stroke victory, this marks Rose's 11th title on the PGA Tour and perhaps the start of a late-career resurgence. Reigning atop the world of golf the last time he won on the PGA Tour, Rose went looking for answers when no questions were being asked. Switching swing coaches and signing with new equipment manufacturers, that chapter of the major champion's career appears to be in the past.

If so, the 42-year-old will now not only attempt to play himself into contention at future major championships, but will surely be having conversations with his fellow countryman, Luke Donald, about the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome come September. Hoping to join a new cast of European characters led by Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm, Rose in a playing capacity could be enough give an underdog home team the experience and belief to stand tall against the American gladiators. Grade: A+

Here is a breakdown of the rest of the leaderboard at the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

T4. Denny McCarthy (-14): One of the best putters in the world, McCarthy caught fire around Pebble Beach on Sunday. Turning in 7-under 29, McCarthy got as low as 8 under on his round before a pair of bogeys derailed his winning aspirations. On shorter, positional golf courses, the 29-year-old continues to pop up on leaderboards. Should the iron play turn a corner in 2023, McCarthy should be on the short list of potential first-time PGA Tour winners this season. Grade: A

T4. Keith Mitchell (-14): For much of this tournament, it felt as though Mitchell would somehow find a way to win. While he was unable to hole enough putts in the final round, this effort marked his second consecutive quality showing at Pebble Beach. While he remains one of the top five drivers of the golf ball in the world, it is Mitchell's improvement around the green that will propel him to new heights. He is simply too talented to be winless since his lone PGA Tour victory at the 2019 Honda Classic. Grade: A-

T13. Viktor Hovland (-10): The world No. 11 began the final round just three strokes off the pace but was unable to garner any momentum in his last 18 holes. Continuing his love affair with the coast of California, Hovland added a top-20 result to his Pebble Beach résumé that already included a U.S. Amateur title and an amateur scoring record at the 2019 U.S. Open. His short game continues to show signs of improvement, which will be needed if he is to contend at the WM Phoenix Open, where he has missed the cut in two prior appearances. Grade: B

T63. Jordan Spieth (E): After making the cut on the number, Spieth struggled to find the center of the club face in his final round. At a venue that has been so kind to him in the past, this disappointing result may finally be enough to sound the alarms. Without a top-10 finish in a full-field event since The Open at St. Andrews, Spieth has looked visibly uncomfortable over the ball -- both with the full swing and with the putter in hand. The WM Phoenix Open was the site of his resurgence in 2021 and will need to serve in the same capacity if he is to get his 2023 on track. Grade: D

MC. Matt Fitzpatrick: He entered the week with some injury concerns, and he was always going to be a tall task to contend with the rain and weather. Fitzpatrick uncharacteristically lost a total of four golf balls in his 54-hole of play and will need to tighten up his ball striking before heading to TPC Scottsdale. Finishing in a tie for 10th in his WM Phoenix Open debut a season ago, don't be surprised if the Englishman is percolating in the desert. Grade: F
