  • Karan Higdon: Dropped by Houston

The Texans waived Higdon on Saturday. Higdon spent the 2019 campaign on the Texans' practice squad and is likely heading there again this season. If David Johnson, Duke Johnson or Buddy Howell sustains an injury, expect Higdon to be next in line for a promotion.

  • Texans' Karan Higdon: Sticks in Houston

Higdon signed a reserve/future contract with the Texans on Monday. Higdon joined the Texans as an undrafted free agent in the spring and remained on the practice squad after falling victim to roster cutdowns. The 23-year-old will now have a full offseason with the team to work towards a roster spot in 2020.

  • Karan Higdon: Signs with Texans' practice squad

Higdon was signed to the Houston's practice squad. Higdon was the Texans' top ball carrier in terms of attempts during the preseason, but Lamar Miller's injury created a need to add more proven backs to the mix. Hence, the Texans will ride Duke Johnson and Carlos Hyde as their top two backs with Buddy Howell and Taiwan Jones filling out the depth chart.

  • Karan Higdon: Let go by Texans

Houston waived Higdon on Saturday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports. The 22-year-old started in Houston's preseason finale against the Rams, rushing eight times for 25 yards and catching both of his targets for 16 more yards. The Texans traded for fellow running back Carlos Hyde on Saturday, which alleviated some pressure on their running back situation but made Higdon more expendable.

  • Texans' Karan Higdon: Held in check versus Rams

Higdon carried eight times for 25 yards and caught both his targets for an additional 16 yards during Thursday's 22-10 preseason loss to the Rams. Higdon started and featured several times on the team's long touchdown drive to start the game, but he generated very little in the way of statistics. He alternated drives with Damerea Crockett in the early going, though neither back found much success running the ball. Higdon is in contention to make the regular season roster, and although he's underwhelmed over the last couple of exhibition contests, his odds of doing so went up drastically last week when Lamar Miller suffered a serious knee injury.

  • Texans' Karan Higdon: Records 28 rushing yards

Higdon gained 28 yards on 13 carries and failed to bring in his only target during Saturday's 34-0 preseason loss to the Cowboys. Higdon recorded 10 more carries than any other running back on the roster, though he came away with an underwhelming average of 2.2 yards per carry. His futility looks even worse considering the rest of the ball carriers for the Texans racked up 57 yards on just nine totes. Perhaps the most important news for Higdon was that of a potentially serious injury to Lamar Miller, which could give him a shot to make the team when the regular season rolls around. To do that he will need to come through with a strong performance in the exhibition finale against the Rams.

  • Texans' Karan Higdon: Gains 37 yards in NFL debut

Higdon rushed eight times for 37 yards in Thursday's 28-26 preseason opening loss to the Packers. Higdon finished with two more carries and 13 more yards than fellow undrafted rookie Damarea Crockett, but Crockett also had a touchdown while Higdon failed to find the end zone. It's unlikely more than one of these two running backs makes the roster, especially with the Texans trading for Duke Johnson earlier Thursday, so Higdon will have his work cut out for him throughout the remainder of the preseason.

  • Texans' Karan Higdon: Enters backup gig competition

Higdon is in the competition for a backup role behind top back Lamar Miller in the wake of the Texans waiving D'Onta Foreman, Deepi Sidhu of the team's official site reports. With Foreman out of the picture, Houston's depth chart is wide open behind top running back Lamar Miller. It's possible that the Texans will opt to acquire a No. 2 option via either free agency or trade, and as an undrafted rookie Higdon faces a steep path to meaningful snaps even if his competition remains limited to Buddy Howell, Josh Ferguson, Damarea Crockett and Taiwan Jones. Though he faces long odds, it's worth noting that Higdon boasts impressive speed (4.49 40-yard dash) and was extremely productive in college. Higdon was Michigan's leading rusher during his last two seasons (5.6 YPC) and notched eight games with over 100 rushing yards as a senior.

  • Karan Higdon: To join Houston

The Texans are expected to sign Higdon as an undrafted free agent, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports. Higdon was extremely productive during his time with Michigan, racking up a 5.6 yards per carry average to go along with 27 rushing touchdowns in 39 career games. He will bring explosiveness to a Texans backfield that already has proven pros such as Lamar Miller and D'Onta Foreman. Higdon will have to compete for a depth role and a special teams job in 2019.
