  • Brennan Scarlett: Reaches injury settlement

The Dolphins released Scarlett (undisclosed) from injured reserve with an injury settlement Monday, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports. Scarlett was set to miss the entire 2022 campaign after landing on IR, but he'll now be free to join a new team once he clears his current injury. Per Jackson, the veteran linebacker is expected to be healthy by Week 7 or 8 of the regular season.

  • Dolphins' Brennan Scarlett: Healthy following knee injury

Scarlett (knee) was activated off injured reserve Saturday. The sub linebacker has been a major special-teams component, primarily racking up his 17 tackles through that means. Expect Scarlett to immediately resume his special-teams role.

  • Texans' Brennan Scarlett: Shifts to IR, as expected

The Texans placed Scarlett (forearm) on injured reserve Monday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports. Scarlett suffered a fractured forearm during Sunday's win over the Jaguars, and he's expected to face an extended absence. The Texans are expected to get Whitney Mercilus back from the COVID-19 list this week, but they'll still be short-handed at linebacker. Jonathan Greenard and Nate Orchard are candidates to slot into a starting role on the outside.

  • Texans' Brennan Scarlett: Coming off best season

Scarlett recorded career highs in snaps, tackles and sacks over 15 games in 2019. Scarlett had primarily been a special teams player during his first three years in Houston, but he emerged as a bigger contributor on defense after the Texans traded Jadeveon Clowney to Seattle prior to the start of the season. When taking that into consideration, it's no surprise Scarlett increased his production. Looking a bit deeper, however, it's notable that he dropped over the second half of the season, which suggests the rigors of more playing time -- Scarlett continued as a regular member on special teams -- may have reduced his effectiveness. The second half was also a time when J.J. Watt missed time due to a pectoral injury. Both Scarlett and fellow outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus experienced diminished output with Watt out of the lineup. That could be a reason why Houston fired outside linebackers coach John Pagano. Scarlett has one more year remaining on his contract and could play a significant role on defense in 2020; however, the Texans are expected to make changes to a defensive unit that ranked 28th in 2019. They've replaced defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel with Anthony Weaver and are looking for Pagano's replacement.

  • Texans' Brennan Scarlett: Suiting up Sunday

Scarlett (Achilles/shoulder) is active for Sunday's tilt against the Titans. Scarlett is set to take the field after being a limited participant in all three practices leading up to Sunday's contest. He'll draw his usual start in Houston's linebacker corps.

  • Texans' Brennan Scarlett: Inactive against New England

Scarlett (shoulder) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Patriots. Scarlett practiced all week in a limited fashion, but he wasn't able to overcome this shoulder issue in time. In his stead, Jacob Martin -- who has seven tackles and a sack through 11 games -- is a top candidate to start at outside linebacker.

  • Texans' Brennan Scarlett: Notches TFL against Colts

Scarlett produced six tackles -- one for a loss -- during Thursday's 20-17 win over the Colts. After failing to notch a tackle for loss over the first six games, Scarlett has one in each of the last three contests. With this performance, Scarlett now has a career-high 35 tackles this year.

  • Texans' Brennan Scarlett: Registers sack in loss

Scarlett had eight tackles and one sack in Sunday's 41-7 loss to the Ravens in Week 11. Scarlett was the lone Texan to bring down quarterback Lamar Jackson behind the line of scrimmage. Only one other member of Houston's defense -- Charles Omenihu -- was credited with a quarterback hit. It was that type of day for the Texans. This was the second straight game in which Scarlett had a sack. He's part of the crew Texans defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel has been using to fill the void created by J.J. Watt's season-ending pectoral injury.

  • Texans' Brennan Scarlett: Extends with Texans

The Texans signed Scarlett to a contract extension Wednesday. Scarlett has earned his salary mostly on special teams, but during the 2019 training camp, he's been filling in for Jadeveon Clowney (contract dispute). With rumors circulating that Clowney is being shopped to other teams, Scarlett could join the Texans first-team defense at linebacker.

  • Texans' Brennan Scarlett: Unofficially second-stringer

Scarlett is listed as a second-string outside linebacker on the Texans' first unofficial depth chart. Despite this listing, Scarlett has been working with the first-team defense in training camp as Jadeveon Clowney stays away from the team due to a standoff over the franchise tag. Although Clowney is expected to return by Week 1, Scarlett would be in line for a significant weekly snap count if the former does not.

  • Texans' Brennan Scarlett: Tendered by Houston

The Texans extended a $2.025 million tender to Scarlett on Monday, Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle reports. Scarlett missed the last five games of the season with an ankle injury, but still produced 18 tackles (12 solo), a forced fumble and an interception in 2018. A team could still sign him to an offer sheet, which the Texans would have the chance to match. If he stays, he likely would regain his role as a depth linebacker and contributor on special teams.

  • Texans' Brennan Scarlett: Filling in for Clowney

Scarlett (foot) is getting reps with the first-team defense while starter Jadeveon Clowney is being eased into drills, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports. Scarlett, who finished up 2017 on injured reserve due to a foot injury, is healthy again and working on moves to elude blockers. He started five of 11 games played last season and recorded 29 tackles with two sacks.

  • Texans' Brennan Scarlett: Activated from injured reserve

Scarlett (hamstring) was activated from injured reserve Saturday, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports. Scarlett missed nearly two months after injuring his hamstring in Week 6, but the Texans designated him to return from injured reserve earlier this week, and they made the move official Saturday. Scarlett could have a chance to see action right away with fellow linebackers John Simon (chest) and Whitney Mercilus (back) both out for Week 15.

  • Texans' Brennan Scarlett: Shines in preseason Week 3

Scarlett had two sacks, a forced fumble and was credited with five tackles in Houston's win over Arizona in preseason Week 3. Scarlett had been on the active/non-football injury list and missed the first two weeks of training camp, but has made a positive impression on coaches in preseason Week 2 and 3. Last week against the Saints, he had three tackles, with on for a loss. The Texans' starters at outside linebacker are set with Jadeveon Clowney and Whitney Mercilus, but you can never have enough edge rushers on the roster. Scarlett, an undrafted rookie free agent out of Stanford, is pushing for a roster spot.
