  • Seahawks' Sean Mannion: Gets elevated for Monday's game

Seattle elevated Mannion from its practice squad to the active roster for Monday's game versus the Eagles, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. The move would suggest that the Seahawks are not confident that starting quarterback Geno Smith (groin) is going to be ready to play in Week 15, an outcome that would leave Mannion as the primary backup to Drew Lock. Mannion hasn't played a regular-season snap since 2021 with Minnesota.

  • Sean Mannion: Back to practice squad

The Seahawks reverted Mannion to the practice squad Monday. Mannion was elevated by the Seahawks on Saturday, just one day after joining their practice squad after being let go by the Vikings on Nov. 28. He was active for Sunday's 28-16 loss to the 49ers with Geno Smith (groin) ruled out for the game, and the former acted as the backup to Drew Lock. Mannion didn't see the field Sunday, though he could operate as the backup for the Week 15 game against the Eagles if Smith is unable to play.

  • Seahawks' Sean Mannion: Elevated to roster

Mannion was elevated to the Seahawks' active roster Saturday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. It's perhaps a bad sign for the status of Geno Smith (groin) who didn't practice all week. The Seahawks already have backup Drew Lock on the roster and ready to play in case of Smith's absence, so Mannion would be the backup quarterback in that scenario. The 31-year-old last recorded a snap with Minnesota in 2021, when he completed 22 of 36 attempts for 189 yards and a touchdown.

  • Sean Mannion: Returns to practice squad

Mannion reverted to the Vikings' practice squad Monday. Mannion operated as the team's backup quarterback behind Joshua Dobbs in Minnesota's 27-19 win over New Orleans, failing to enter the game. If Jaren Hall (concussion) and Nick Mullens (back) remain unavailable to play in Week 11, it's likely that Mannion will once again be elevated to the active roster for the team's contest with the Broncos.

  • Vikings' Sean Mannion: Moves to active roster

The Vikings elevated Mannion from the practice squad Saturday. With Jaren Hall (concussion) ruled out for Sunday's game against the Saints and Nick Mullens (back) not yet ready to return from injured reserve, Mannion should serve as Minnesota's backup to Joshua Dobbs in Week 10. The 31-year-old Mannion signed with the Vikings' practice squad Oct. 11 and last appeared in an NFL game in 2021.

  • Sean Mannion: Joins Seattle's practice squad

The Seahawks signed Mannion to their practice squad Wednesday, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports. Mannion spent training camp with Minnesota but was let go after the team traded for Nick Mullens. Mannion, a 2015 third-round pick, has been a serviceable backup during his career, appearing in 14 games across six seasons (split between the Rams and Vikings). However, he'll serve as an emergency option on Seattle's practice squad in case something happens to Geno Smith or Drew Lock.

  • Sean Mannion: Released by Minnesota

The Vikings released Mannion on Tuesday, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Mannion and Kellen Mond were both let go Tuesday after competing for the No. 2 gig during training camp, leaving recently acquired Nick Mullens as the top backup behind Kirk Cousins. Mannion, a 2015 third-round pick, had a solid preseason, but it's unclear what kind of attention he'll receive as a free agent.

  • Vikings' Sean Mannion: Will split preseason reps Sunday

Mannion and Kellen Mond will get a "50-50" split of reps in Sunday's preseason game against Las Vegas, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Mannion and Mond are in a tight competition for the backup role behind starter Kirk Cousins and their preseason performances will go a lot way to determining the winner. Cousins will miss the game after testing positive for Covid-19, but he was unlikely to play even if healthy. Head coach Kevin O'Connell did not say whether Mannion or Mond will start Sunday's game, however.

  • Vikings' Sean Mannion: Locked in for Week 17 start

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer confirmed Mannion will serve as the team's starting quarterback Sunday against the Packers, Chad Graff of The Athletic reports. Mannion's appointment to the starting role was expected after Kirk Cousins was ruled out for Week 17 after testing positive for the coronavirus Friday and subsequently landing on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Though Mannion was on the same list for six days before being activated earlier Friday, Zimmer told Graff there "really wasn't" any consideration to handing the start to third-string rookie Kellen Mond, the only Minnesota signal-caller who was able to practice all week. While the lack of three full practices with the first-team offense leading up to Sunday's game in Green Bay is less than ideal, Mannion is at least fully familiar with Minnesota's playbook after spending parts of the past three seasons in the organization. He's only seen spot duty behind Cousins during his time in Minnesota, with Mannion's sole start as a member of the Vikings coming while the team was resting several key contributors in Week 17 of the 2019 season. He struggled mightily in a loss to the Bears in that game, completing 12 of 21 attempts for 126 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.

  • Vikings' Sean Mannion: Won't play after testing positive

The Vikings placed Mannion on the reserve/COVID-19 list Sunday, ruling him out for Minnesota's Week 16 game against the Rams. Per Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com, Mannion is vaccinated, which means he tested positive for the virus. With Mannion not available Sunday, rookie Kellen Mond will dress for the first time this season as the backup to starting quarterback Kirk Cousins.

  • Vikings' Sean Mannion: Signs with 53-man roster

The Vikings signed Mannion to the 53-man roster Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Mannion was called up from the practice squad to serve as Kirk Cousins' backup in each of the first two games. Now, he's an honest member of the 53-man roster, and he'll likely remain ahead of rookie Kellen Mond for the foreseeable future.

  • Sean Mannion: Reverts to practice squad

Mannion returned to the Vikings' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction report. Mannion was elevated to Minnesota's active roster prior to Sunday's loss to the Cardinals. He served as Kirk Cousins' backup, as third-round pick Kellen Mond was again a healthy scratch. The veteran did not end up seeing the field.

  • Vikings' Sean Mannion: Up to active roster

Mannion was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday. Mannion will serve as Kirk Cousins' backup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, as rookie third-round pick Kellen Mond will likely be a healthy scratch again.

  • Vikings' Sean Mannion: No game action in 2020

Mannion didn't see the field during the 2020 season. Mannion spent another year acting as Kirk Cousins' backup, but despite being active for all 16 games the 28-year-old didn't take a snap under center. An unrestricted free agent in the offseason, Mannion likely will have a similar fate if he's on a roster.

  • Vikings' Sean Mannion: Re-ups with Minnesota

Mannion agreed to terms Wednesday with the Vikings on a one-year contract, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Mannion is in line to return for another year as Kirk Cousins' backup, despite having underwhelmed in his lone extended action in Week 17 of last season. Of course, it's worth noting that his unimpressive showing came without the presence of Minnesota's top running backs (Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison) and top offensive tackles (Riley Reiff and Brian O'Neill). The Vikings could still bring in other competition for the backup job this summer.

  • Vikings' Sean Mannion: Should act as top QB in Week 17

Mannion will serve as the Vikings' primary quarterback in Sunday's game against the Bears, even if he doesn't start, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports. Coach Mike Zimmer hasn't confirmed how he plans to proceed with resting his players in Week 17, but all reports thus far have suggested that several key regulars -- including Kirk Cousins -- won't play much, if at all. Cousins is active against Chicago, but Cronin suggests that even if the veteran signal-caller gets the first snap, he'll merely just be preserving his consecutive start streak before exiting the contest soon thereafter. Mannion, who has appeared in only two games and has played five snaps in total, will thus be in store for his most extended action of the campaign. The setup isn't favorable, however, as the Vikings' top two running backs (Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison) are out with injuries, while starting offensive tackles Riley Reiff and Brian O'Neill are healthy inactives. Additionally, star wideouts Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs are among the several Vikings who will likely have limited roles in Week 17.

  • Vikings' Sean Mannion: Could get second career start

Mannion could get his second career start this week against Chicago if starter Kirk Cousins is rested ahead of the playoffs, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. "Sean's a smart guy,'' head coach Mike Zimmer said. "He's done a really good job on the (scout team). When he gets his opportunities with the other guys, he's done a good job." With the Vikings locked into the No. 6 playoff seed, there's nothing to play for this week against Chicago. However, the Vikings may be motivated to play their starters for a quarter or two after a poor offensive performance in last week's loss to Green Bay. Head coach Mike Zimmer hasn't said whether he'll rest his starters and may not announce a decision until kickoff. Either way, it seems likely that Mannion will see significant action Sunday as it's unlikely Cousins will play more than a quarter or two.

  • Vikings' Sean Mannion: Strong preseason debut

Mannion was 7-of-13 for 102 yards passing with a touchdown and no interceptions in Friday's preseason win over New Orleans. Mannion had a solid performance, and he's expected to win the backup job behind Kirk Cousins. So far in camp there hasn't been much talk that his spot as the No. 2 QB is at risk.

  • Sean Mannion: Could head to Minnesota

Mannion is having conversations to sign with the Vikings, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. Mannion appeared in three games with the Rams last season as Jared Goff's backup and attempted only three passes. The 26-year-old won't return to his old job in Los Angeles after the team signed Blake Bortles on Monday. The Vikings have Kirk Cousins and Kyle Sloter under contract for 2019, they but appear to be looking for a more veteran backup option than Sloter.

  • Rams' Sean Mannion: Backup duty likely Saturday

Mannion is trending toward handling backup duties to starting quarterback Jared Goff (concussion) on Saturday against the 49ers, Rich Hammond of the Orange County Register reports. On Tuesday, Goff handled a full allotment of reps at practice, after which interim head coach John Fassel stated the rookie has entered the final stage of the concussion protocol. Goff will thus have three days to meet with an independent neurologist and gain clearance for game action. If the preceding occurs, as expected, Goff will assume his typical mantle, while Mannion usurps veteran Case Keenum as the Rams looks toward the future.
