  • Saints' Kiko Alonso: Re-joins New Orleans

Alonso signed a one-year contract with the Saints on Thursday after a successful workout with the team earlier in the day, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. Alonso left New Orleans after the 2019 campaign to sign with the 49ers, but he has missed the past two seasons after suffering a torn ACL in January 2020. Returning to the Saints was reportedly the 31-year-old's top choice as the team was the first one reached out to by his representation this offseason, according to Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com. Alonso collected 31 tackles over 13 games in New Orleans three years ago, and he should slot into a backup role at middle linebacker behind Demario Davis.

  • Saints' Kiko Alonso: Shifts to PUP list

The Saints placed Alonso (knee) on the reserve/PUP list Saturday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports. Alonso tore his ACL in January and hasn't practiced yet, so it's not surprising that he'll be shut down for at least six more weeks. The veteran linebacker battled an assortment of injuries in 2019 and played a minimal role as a result, so he wasn't locked in as the clear starting middle linebacker. Craig Robertson is expected to start at the position to begin the year, and Alonso will battle for reps once he's fully healthy.

  • Saints' Kiko Alonso: Small defensive role in loss

Alonso played only four snaps on defense (six percent) during Sunday's 27-9 loss to the Rams. Alonso notched one solo tackle despite his minimal role and played two snaps on special teams. The veteran linebacker was dealing with an undisclosed injury when New Orleans acquired him from Miami on Sept. 1, and he still appears to be getting up to speed with the new defensive scheme. Alonso may not manage to carve out a starting role in the Saints' defense, but he could conceivably see increased usage as the season progresses.

  • Dolphins' Kiko Alonso: Could be traded

Alonso (undisclosed) is a candidate to be traded by the Dolphins, Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald reports. Alonso did not practice Monday due to a lingering undisclosed injury. Miami would free up $7 million in cap space with only $1.3 million in dead money if it was to find a trade partner for Alonso, as opposed to cutting him, which would carry $8.2 million in dead money. The veteran linebacker has been a reliable member of the Dolphins' defense since signing with the team in 2016, suiting up for 46 of 48 possible regular-season contests and recording an average of 118 tackles per season.

  • Dolphins' Kiko Alonso: Sidelined Tuesday

Alonso was unable to participate in Tuesday's practice due to an undisclosed injury, Safid Deen of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports. Alonso has dealt with knee and head injuries to this point in his career, so the team could have elected to give the veteran a rest day. In his stead, Terrill Hanks took over his position during practice. Following practice, Alonso said the injury isn't considered a long-term issue, and he should only miss a "practice or two," per Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald.

  • Dolphins' Kiko Alonso: Ends season with ejection

Alonso, who logged five tackles (four solo) before being ejected from Sunday's 42-17 loss to the Bills, finishes up the 2018 season with 125 tackles, six passes defended, three interceptions, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Alonso was ejected from Sunday's season finale for a late hit on Bills quarterback Josh Allen in the third quarter, which was reminiscent of previous late hits involving Joe Flacco and Andrew Luck. The play devolved into a scuffle, leading to Robert Quinn and Jordan Mills also being ejected. Alonso was a rare beacon of consistency in the Dolphins' defense this year -- leading the unit in tackles -- and remains signed with the team through 2020.

  • Dolphins' Kiko Alonso: Active Week 17

Alonso (knee) is active for Sunday's Week 17 tilt against the Bills. Alonso will thus tough out his knee issue to suit up for the season finale, although it remains to be seen if he'll actually get any game reps. He enjoyed active status last week versus the Jaguars as well, but he didn't log any snaps. The veteran linebacker is one of the few bright spots for a Dolphins team that appears headed for wholesale changes in both the coaching staff and player personnel this offseason.

  • Dolphins' Kiko Alonso: Won't be moved to the middle

The Dolphins currently have no plans to move Alonso to middle linebacker, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports. The loss of Koa MIsi (neck) and Raekwon McMillan (knee) for the season had some thinking that Alonso could move back to MLB, a position he has played in the past, but the team doesn't believe that would be in the best interest of keeping Alonso healthy and productive all season. Miami will keep Alonso at WLB, with Lawrence Timmons at SLB and Mike Hull in the middle for the immediate future.

  • Dolphins' Kiko Alonso: Does not want to switch positions

Alonso (thumb) would prefer to remain at middle linebacker next season, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports. Alonso is coming off a season that saw him post 115 tackles, four fumble recoveries, a forced fumble, and two interceptions. He believes he can post the same or even better numbers should he play in what is virtually the same defensive system for a second season in a row, something that has never happened prior in his career. Whether or not the Dolphins ask him to move will likely depend on any additions they make during free agency.

Alonso underwent surgery on his right thumb following the Dolphins' wild-card loss, Adam Caplan of ESPN.com reports. The recovery time is expected to be around six weeks. Alonso will focus on rehabbing his thumb in order to return in time for the team's offseason workouts. He consistently played through the aliment last season, as he underwent surgery on the thumb in early December. The linebacker may be moving to the weakside linebacker position this season, so the more time he has to get acclimated to the position the better. Alonso is one of several Dolphin defenders who will miss the game Sunday. The Dolphins may have quite a bit of trouble keeping the Arizona offense in check.
