The Red Sox optioned Grissom to Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Grissom had seemingly fallen to third in line behind Kristian Campbell and David Hamilton in the second base competition, so it's not a surprise he's being cut from big-league camp. The 24-year-old has batted just .176 with a .535 OPS in 13 contests this spring.... See More ... See Less

Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Losing out at 2B?
Grissom may be behind David Hamilton in the battle for the starting second base job, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Red Sox manager Alex Cora is expected to name his starter at second base soon, but it looks like both Grissom (.176 average, .535 OPS) and Kristian Campbell (15 strikeouts in 36 Cactus League at-bats) are losing out to Hamilton. The speedy Hamilton (.812 OPS, five steals) is out-hitting both competitors, and Cora's comments suggest he's more of a known commodity. The manager also noted Hamilton's improvement at the dish in 2024. The lone caveat here is if Rafael Devers eventually takes over at third base, which would likely mean Alex Bregman plays the keystone.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Stacking starts at second base
Grissom leads the Red Sox with six starts at second base this spring, Joe Weil of WEEI reports. Top prospect Kristian Campbell has only started once at the keystone while getting three starts in left field. Grissom is limited to second base, so it makes sense that he wouldn't be playing other positions, but if the Red Sox happen to start the season with Masataka Yoshida (shoulder) on the injured list, Grissom could be the Opening Day starter at second base.... Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Starts Grapefruit League opener
Grissom started at second base and went 0-for-3 in Saturday's spring game against the Rays. While third base has been the hot topic at the start of Boston's spring training, it has great impact on second base. That's where Grissom, Kristian Campbell and David Hamilton are competing for the starting job. Campbell came off the bench Saturday, going 0-for-1 with a walk and made a diving snare off a line drive in the seventh inning. The second-base battle becomes moot if the Red Sox opt to leave Rafael Devers at third base and have Alex Bregman start at second base.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Adds 20 pounds of muscle
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said Tuesday that Grissom added about 20 pounds of muscle over the offseason, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. Grissom appears motivated to bounce back from a lost season in 2024 that saw him play only 86 regular-season games between the majors and minors due to groin and hamstring problems. He posted just a .465 OPS with the Red Sox but did close with a .333/.370/.417 line and two steals over eight games in September. Grissom enters spring training in the mix for Boston's second-base job but will have to fend off Kristian Campbell and David Hamilton.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Favorite for second base job
Grissom is the "nominal favorite" to open next season as the Red Sox' starting second baseman, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports. David Hamilton was Boston's primary second baseman in the second half in 2024 before a fractured finger ended his season in late August. While Hamilton will also be in the running for the starting gig at the keystone in 2025, it sounds like the Red Sox want to give Grissom another look. Grissom slashed only .190/.246/.219 over 31 games with the big club in 2024 while battling numerous injuries, but he closed out the year strong at Triple-A Worcester and will turn just 24 this month. While Grissom might have a slight leg up at second base right now, it's also possible the Red Sox acquire help from outside the organization.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Swipes second bag
Grissom went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base in Tuesday's 6-5 extra-inning win over the Blue Jays. The 23-year-old is getting a shot at regular playing time over the final week of the season, and Grissom took advantage of the opportunity Tuesday. In four appearances since his return to the majors, including three straight starts at second base, he's gone 4-for-12 with one run, two RBI and both his steals on the year. Grissom has had a tough 2024 campaign, but he could still head into spring training next year as the favorite to start at the keystone.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Records RBI in win
Grissom started at second base and went 0-for-3 with an RBI in Monday's 4-1 win over Toronto. Grissom knocked in Boston's first run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning. It was his first RBI since rejoining the Red Sox late last week. He's been in the lineup three consecutive days, including the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader, and should get plenty of opportunities at second base over the final week of the regular season. The position, which he had been expected to fill prior to injuries flaring up in spring training, has been a revolving door for Boston in 2024. Grissom is looking to build off a month of sustained success at Triple-A Worcester, for whom he batted .366/.489/.549 with 18 walks, four home runs, 18 RBI and 17 runs scored over 21 games before his elevation to the majors.... Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Could be optioned after rehab
The Red Sox are considering optioning Grissom (hamstring) to Triple-A Worcester following the conclusion of his minor-league rehab assignment, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Grissom has to be reinstated from the 10-day injured list by Aug. 9, but the Red Sox may be inclined to leave him at Worcester at that time rather than clearing a spot for him on the 26-man active roster. The 23-year-old has slashed a woeful .148/.207/.160 in 23 contests with the Red Sox this season and is hitting just .231/.333/.269 so far in seven rehab games with Worcester.... See More ... Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Productive rehab start
Grissom (hamstring) started at second base and went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI in a rehab game for Triple-A Worcester on Sunday. Grissom played six innings in the field before being removed. He began his rehab assignment Saturday, serving as the designated hitter and going hitless in two at-bats with two walks and a stolen base. The Red Sox believe Grissom could need close to the maximum 20 days for his rehab assignment, pushing his potential return from the 10-day injured list into the second week of August.... See More ... Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Heading to Worcester for rehab
Grissom (hamstring) will report to Triple-A Worcester during the All-Star break to begin a rehab assignment, Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Grissom made progress over the previous week, regaining strength in his strained right hamstring to the point that the Red Sox mapped out a rehab plan. The infielder will have a few days of workouts before beginning a rehab assignment. According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, Red Sox manager Alex Cora wouldn't definitively say that Grissom would serve as the club's everyday second baseman upon his return from the injured list, as David Hamilton has been producing well as the primary option at the position in recent weeks. Grissom has two minor-league options remaining and could stick around at Worcester once activated if regular at-bats aren't available to him in the big leagues.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Turning corner
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday the team hopes to start planning a minor-league rehab assignment for Grissom (hamstring) toward the end of the week, MLB.com reports. Grissom has been building strength in both hamstrings and appears to have turned a corner in his recovery. Cora believes Grissom's issues may be related to his winter preparation, which was different compared to previous offseasons after being acquired from Atlanta.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Headed for MRI
Grissom, who was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a right hamstring strain, is slated to undergo an MRI, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. "We're not there yet," manager Alex Cora said, when asked about a timeline for Grissom's return. "He feels like it wasn't as bad as in spring training. But he's getting imaging so we'll know." Grissom's upcoming MRI should shed light on the severity of the hamstring strain he sustained in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Tigers. As Cora notes, Grissom was previously slowed by a left groin/hamstring injury in spring training, which prevented the 23-year-old from making his Red Sox debut until May 3. For whatever length of time Grissom is sidelined this time around, Enmanuel Valdez is likely to serve as the Red Sox's primary second baseman against right-handed pitching, while Jamie Westbrook should be the main option at the keystone versus lefties.... Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Moves to IL
The Red Sox placed Grissom (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list Sunday. Though the right hamstring strain that forced Grissom out of Saturday's 6-3 win over the Tigers is considered mild, he'll still need at least a week and a half to make a full recovery from the injury before rejoining Boston's 26-man active roster. The Red Sox selected the contract of Jamie Westbrook from Triple-A Worcester to bolster the team's depth in the middle infield in the short term, but Enmanuel Valdez and David Hamilton may be more likely options to pick up starts at second base while Grissom is on the mend.... Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Exits early Saturday
Grissom was removed from Saturday's contest with the Tigers in the top of the third inning due to a right hamstring strain, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. Grissom grounded out in the bottom of the second inning and was replaced by Connor Wong at second base. He missed the first month of the season with a left hamstring strain. The Red Sox will close out its series against Detroit on Sunday before getting a day off Monday. Expect more information regarding Grissom's injury after Saturday's game.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Resting Saturday
Grissom isn't in the Red Sox's lineup for Saturday's game against the Brewers, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. Grissom has gone just 1-for-18 across his last five contests, so he'll sit out Saturday in order to regroup. David Hamilton and Ceddanne Rafaela will make up Boston's middle infield while Grissom is on the bench.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Hitting bench Monday
Grissom is out of the lineup for Monday's game at Tampa Bay, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Grissom started the previous four games but will take a seat after going 2-for-15 during that stretch. David Hamilton will step in at the keystone and bat seventh in the series opener versus the Rays.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Getting day off Wednesday
Grissom is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Rays. Grissom had started each of the previous eight contests and nine of 10 games since returning from the injured list, but he'll begin Wednesday's game on the bench as the Red Sox square off against Taj Bradley and the Rays. The 23-year-old has gotten off to a slow start, going just 5-for-37 with a 7:0 K:BB. David Hamilton will draw a start at second base Wednesday.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Collects first hit
Grissom went 1-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 9-2 win over Minnesota. With Boston leading, 3-1, in the eighth inning, Grissom unloaded on a cutter from Kody Funderburk, driving it the opposite way for a two-run double. It was the first hit in a Red Sox uniform for Grissom, who was activated Friday after opening the season on the injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Day off Saturday
Grissom isn't in the Red Sox's lineup for Saturday's game against Minnesota, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. Saturday was a planned off day for Grissom, as the Red Sox will try to ease the 23-year-old back after he missed the first month of the season due to a hamstring injury. David Hamilton will start at the keystone and bat eighth while Grissom sits.... See More ... See Less
