Player Outlook
The youngest qualified hitter at Triple-A last season, Masyn Winn went on a summer-long heater that earned him a call to the majors late enough in the calendar to preserve his rookie status. He had a .553 OPS in his first 21 games at Triple-A and slashed .309/.383/.520 with 17 home runs and nine steals on 11 attempts over his final 83 games before getting the call. Over that stretch, his 14.7 percent strikeout rate and 9.5 percent walk rate were particularly impressive, even considering the automated balls and strikes system at Triple-A. Winn, a former two-way prospect, is probably known best known for his 80-grade arm at shortstop, however he's a great all-around athlete with plus speed and plus bat speed. He will turn 22 during spring training and is a shoo-in to enter the year as the everyday shortstop. Winn won't wow anyone with his exit velocities at this stage of his development, but his 81.7 percent contact rate, steady playing time and speed on the bases portends a fairly high floor. It should have surprised no one that he struggled initially in the majors, given his age, and a .196 BABIP played a role in that as well.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Still in line to start at shortstop

Winn has been told by the Cardinals that the shortstop job "is his to seize" even after the addition of Brandon Crawford, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. President of baseball operations John Mozeliak confirmed as much Tuesday, saying "this is Masyn's job," per Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat. Crawford was officially inked to a one-year contract Tuesday and will provide some veteran insurance at short behind Winn. However, the 21-year-old is still fully expected to break camp as the starter, barring a dreadful showing this spring. Winn slashed just .172/.230/.238 in 37 games with the Cards last season but hit .288/.359/.474 with 18 homers and 17 steals in 105 contests at Triple-A Memphis.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Good to go Sunday

Winn (upper body) is starting at shortstop and batting leadoff in Sunday's spring game against the Astros, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Winn has been dealing with tightness in his upper body but went through a full workout Friday and has now been cleared for game action. The 21-year-old shortstop is poised to start Opening Day for the Cardinals, assuming he avoids further injury issues.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Resumes full activities Friday

Winn (upper body) went through a full workout Friday, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Winn had not been able to hit the previous two days because of upper-body discomfort, but he took part in batting practice Friday without any apparent issues. The Cardinals will wait to see how the rookie responds before determining when he'll make his Grapefruit League debut, but it could come as soon as Sunday or early next week. Winn is expected to be the club's Opening Day shortstop.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Lifts second homer

Winn went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Padres. Winn tied the game at 1-1 with his sixth-inning blast. The shortstop continues to struggle at the major-league level -- he's gone just 7-for-31 (.226) over his last 10 games, though that's an improvement on his .173 batting average for the season. Winn has a .474 OPS, two homers, six RBI, eight runs scored and two stolen bases through 29 contests.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Logs second steal

Winn went 0-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Reds. Winn reached on a fielder's choice and notched his second major-league steal in the fourth inning. It's been a rough adjustment to the majors for the rookie shortstop, who has gone 3-for-23 (.130) over six games in September. He's batting .156 with one home run, four RBI and six runs scored through his first 18 contests. While Winn is seeing a majority of the playing time at shortstop, Tommy Edman has occasionally filled in there as well.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Taking seat Friday

Winn is absent from the lineup for Friday's game in Cincinnati, John Denton of MLB.com reports. It will be the third day off for Winn since he was promoted back on Aug. 18. He has managed just a .430 OPS in his first 17 major-league games, although he did hit his first homer earlier this week. Tommy Edman will get a start at shortstop Friday.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Hits bench Sunday

Winn is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Tommy Edman will handle shortstop duties in the series finale after Winn manned the position in each of the past five games. While the long-term future remains bright for the 21-year-old rookie, he's gotten off to a slow start to his big-league career with a .170/.188/.213 slash line through his first 49 plate appearances for St. Louis.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Not in lineup Sunday

Winn is not in the lineup Sunday at Philadelphia. Tommy Edman will start at shortstop and bat leadoff as Nolan Gorman covers second base and Richie Palacios patrols center field. Winn, 21, has gone 5-for-29 (.172) with zero home runs and one stolen base through his first eight major-league games.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Achieves two firsts Wednesday

Winn went 1-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's 6-4 win over the Pirates. Winn checked off a couple of milestones with his first major-league RBI and steal in this contest. He's batting .217 (5-for-23) with a double over his first six major-league games while holding down the starting job at shortstop, as expected.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Possible waiver wire pickups

Of all the prospect call-ups from the weekend, Winn feels the most "right." He took a conventional path to the majors, without cutting any stop short, and arrives at his absolute hottest, having homered 10 times in his final 28 games before getting the call. That power surge was basically the last piece of the puzzle, rounding out a skill set that already included a good contact rate, base-stealing ability and highlight-reel defense (mostly because of his arm). The Cardinals will be careful not to let him exceed 130 at-bats, wanting to preserve his rookie status for next year, but he should get the majority of the starts at shortstop moving forward. At his peak, he could offer something like Randy Arozarena production, only at shortstop.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Grabs hit in debut

Winn went 1-for-4 in Friday's 7-1 loss to the Mets. Winn started at shortstop and knocked his first hit, a single, in the fifth inning. The top prospect has looked major-league ready for much of the year after slashing .288/.359/.474 with 18 home runs, 17 stolen bases and 61 RBI over 105 games with Triple-A Memphis. The Cardinals will likely do everything to preserve his rookie status for 2024, which means he cannot accrue 130 at-bats. While Winn is likely to see the bulk of the time at shortstop, his playing time is likely to be managed by keeping him at or near the bottom of the order for the remainder of the season.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Batting ninth in debut

Winn is starting at shortstop and batting ninth in his major-league debut Friday versus the Mets. Winn is set to take over as the Cardinals' regular shortstop down the stretch after being promoted from Triple-A Memphis, where he batted .288/.359/.474 with 18 home runs, 61 RBI and 17 stolen bases over 105 games. With the 21-year-old occupying shortstop and Lars Nootbaar (abdomen) on the injured list, Tommy Edman is starting in center field Friday.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Called up Thursday

Winn had his contract selected by the Cardinals on Thursday. Winn will join the major-league roster with 45 days remaining in the regular season. The team's top prospect has produced a .283 average with 17 homers, 60 RBI, 97 runs and 17 stolen bases over 104 games with Triple-A Memphis this year. Lars Nootbaar (abdomen) was placed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Back from injury

Winn (lower body) has gone 3-for-11 over three games since returning to Triple-A Memphis' lineup. Winn was managing a mild glute strain over the last week, but he's been just fine since getting back into action after a few days off. The top prospect is slashing .284/.356/.467 with 17 home runs, 17 stolen bases, 60 RBI, 95 runs scored, 15 doubles and seven triples through 103 Triple-A games this year. It's expected he'll be called up to the majors some time before the end of the season.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Managing mild glute strain

Winn exited Sunday's game at Triple-A Memphis due to a mild glute strain, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Winn was shaken up in the sixth inning when he hit a base awkwardly, but his injury is considered mild at this point. He should be considered day-to-day for now. Winn has been dominant with the Triple-A club this year, slashing .286/.357/.470 with 17 homers, 92 runs, 59 RBI and 17 steals. However, the Cardinals may wait to call him up until mid-to-late August to preserve his rookie status for next season.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Opening year at Triple-A

Winn is beginning the 2023 season at Triple-A Memphis. There was some thought that Winn might repeat Double-A for a bit, but he showed so well this spring that he's getting the boost to Triple-A just 10 days after his 21st birthday. The toolsy young shortstop slashed .333/.393/.556 with two home runs, two doubles, two triples and four stolen bases over 18 games (61 plate appearances) in the Grapefruit League. He seems certain to make his MLB debut at some point this summer.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Looking good in spring

Winn is hitting .389 (7-for-18) with a home run, a double, three stolen bases and five runs scored through seven Grapefruit League games. Winn's strong spring comes with the caveat that he has yet to play an inning at Triple-A and will likely begin the season with at least a brief stint at Double-A Springfield. He had a .781 OPS with 11 homers and 28 steals over 86 games at that level last season, though he took a noticeable step down from his work at High-A Peoria. Winn, a natural shortstop, is on track to contend for a major-league job in 2024. Tommy Edman and Paul DeJong figure to see most of the time there in 2023.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Rises to Double-A

The Cardinals promoted Winn from High-A Peoria to Double-A Springfield on Tuesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Winn will be joined in Springfield by two of the Cardinals' other top prospects in right-handed starters Gordon Graceffo and Michael McGreevy, who were also bumped up from High-A Peoria. Over his 147 plate appearances at Peoria this season, the 20-year-old Winn produced a .349/.404/.566 slash line while going 15-for-15 on stolen-base attempts.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: On 10-game hitting streak

Winn has hit safely in 10 straight games (and reached safely in all 11) for High-A Peoria, accumulating a .415/.468/.683 line with a homer, two doubles, three triples and four steals so far this season. Winn came into pro ball with questions as to whether he'd stick as a pitcher or a shortstop, and after he posted modest results with the bat last year, there were some questions as to the Cardinals' intentions for him. But they stuck with him at short, and he's rewarded them by flashing tremendous plate discipline (6:7 BB:K) as well as game-breaking speed early in 2022. He likely won't be fast-tracked through the minor leagues, but if Winn keeps hitting this way, a promotion to Double-A should certainly be forthcoming.
