• White Sox's Dominic Fletcher: Not in lineup Friday

It's just the third time this season that the White Sox have faced a lefty, but the left-handed hitting Fletcher has been on the bench for all of them (he's also sat out one game against a righty). Kevin Pillar will get the nod in center field versus Andrew Abbott.

  Fletcher is the leading candidate to start in right field for the White Sox to begin the season, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The White Sox acquired Fletcher from the Diamondbacks in early February, and he should immediately have the chance to contribute to his new club. He made his big-league debut in 2023, posting a .301/.350/.441 line across 102 plate appearances -- good for a 113 wRC+. Fletcher will have to hold off Gavin Sheets and Kevin Pillar during spring training, with the latter being a logical candidate to serve in a short-side platoon role alongside Fletcher in right field.

• Diamondbacks' Dominic Fletcher: Lands on minor-league IL

  Fletcher (undisclosed) was placed on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Reno on Thursday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Fletcher was optioned to Reno in early July and has maintained a .252 average with seven home runs, 25 RBI and 35 runs scored in 31 games since. Those numbers were achieved in a hitter-friendly environment, though it's still possible he'll get another chance in Arizona before the close of the campaign. However, this injury will decrease that likelihood.

Fletcher made a third straight start in place of Corbin Carroll, who has been dealing with a shoulder injury since last Thursday. Carroll served as a pinch hitter Sunday and could rejoin the team Tuesday, which would curb Fletcher's at-bats. It's unclear how the Diamondbacks will adjust the lineup once Carroll is ready, as they currently have six outfielders on the roster. Presumably, either Fletcher or Kyle Lewis will head back to Triple-A Reno.

Fletcher, who was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Friday, filled in for the injured Corbin Carroll, who suffered a shoulder injury and was removed from Thursday's game. Fletcher was up with the Diamondbacks earlier this season after the team demoted Alek Thomas and was initially quite productive. He had a 1.231 OPS through the first two weeks before tailing off (.427 OPS) over the subsequent two weeks. Arizona also recalled outfielder Kyle Lewis from Reno on Friday, so the outfield will be a crowded place once Carroll is ready.

Fletcher will return to the major-league roster after being sent down in late May and batting .328 with two doubles, a triple, seven RBI, 14 runs and a stolen base over 13 Triple-A games since his demotion. He's compiled a .308/.349/.474 slash line with eight extra-base hits, including two homers, over 85 plate appearances with Arizona in 2023, but Fletcher had been in a 6-for-39 (.154) slump when sent back down. The 24-year-old will face off with his brother David Fletcher and the Angels upon his return to the big leagues Friday.

After nailing Tony Kemp at home plate in the seventh inning to preserve a 3-3 tie, he scored Arizona's final run as part of a two-run ninth inning. Fletcher moved into the center field spot that was once held by Alek Thomas, whom the Diamondbacks optioned to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday. The former had usurped at-bats from Thomas since being called up at the end of April and now will become the primary center fielder.

No corresponding transaction has been announced, but this very well could be related to the health of Corbin Carroll after Carroll left Saturday's game with a knee bruise sustained while colliding with the left-field wall. In 93 at-bats thus far with Reno, Fletcher has hit .323 with three homers and a steal while registering a .976 OPS.

The younger brother of the Angels' David Fletcher, Dominic is similarly undersized at 5-foot-9 but has a little more pop in his bat; he's already hit more homers this year (11) than David ever has in a single campaign. The 24-year-old outfielder has made significant progress with his plate discipline, cutting his strikeout rate from 24.8 percent in 2021 to 18.5 percent this year -- a major factor in his improved results.
