We haven't seen Drey Jameson on a major-league mound since July of 2023, as he eventually required Tommy John surgery in September of that year. The expectation is that he will be ready to roll on Opening Day of this season, and the Diamondbacks plan for him to operate in a relief role. Jameson came up through the minors and broke into the majors as a starter, but he had been pitching in relief before his elbow blew out and was having success. Prior to the injury, Jameson reached the upper-90s with his fastball with regularity while also showcasing a wipeout slider. He could be a potential closer if things break right, but there are unknowns with Jameson in 2025 in regard to how his stuff bounces back from surgery and what his usage will look like.

After sitting out the entire 2024 season while recovering from his September 2023 Tommy John surgery, Jameson seemingly operated with no restrictions to begin camp, but having two minor-league options remaining likely worked against him in his bid for the Opening Day roster. Before getting demoted, Jameson made six relief appearances in Cactus League play, giving up one earned run on five hits and three walks while striking out four. He'll work out of the bullpen in Reno and should rank near the top of the list for a call-up early on in the season when Arizona requires an extra relief arm.

Though he had been able to throw off a mound by July of last season, Jameson is presumably doing so with more velocity and better command this spring now that he's further removed from the elbow procedure. The Diamondbacks could still ease Jameson along more slowly in spring training than their other healthy pitchers, but the 27-year-old right-hander said that there's "no question" he'll ready for Opening Day. If Jameson clinches a spot on the season-opening roster, he'll likely be used in lower-leverage situations initially, but he could quickly move up the pecking order in an Arizona bullpen that looks relatively unsettled.

    Jameson struck out one over two scoreless and hitless relief innings in Sunday's 12-3 loss to Cleveland. Jameson gave the Diamondbacks length after starter Zach Davies was removed during the fourth inning. It was the second consecutive appearance in which Jameson threw multiple innings following a short outing from a starter -- he cleaned up for Ryne Nelson on Thursday. Jameson has been used as a long reliever since being called up May 27 but has made spot starts for Arizona and five starts while at Triple-A Reno prior to his current stint with the D-backs. While Arizona appears to be cruising atop the NL West, the back end of the rotation is shaky. Outside of Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, the team's starters have a 6.18 ERA over 43 starts. If manager Torey Lovullo is contemplating change, Jameson is already in house. The right-hander has a 3.45 ERA over 15.2 innings (six relief outings) since returning to MLB.

A rotation shakeup loomed as Zach Davies was activated from the injured list to start Saturday. That transaction coupled with the Pfaadt demotion signaled an easy one-to-one-swap of Davies and Pfaadt. However, things got murky during Saturday's game when manager Torey Lovullo brought starter Tommy Henry in as a reliever, which led to speculation about Jameson entering the rotation and Henry going to the bullpen. Lovullo cleared up matters following the game, noting that the left-handed Henry will remain in the rotation and pitch Wednesday -- he faced four batters and threw just 10 pitches. Jameson is expected to serve in a multi-inning relief role.

Jameson needed 43 pitches to get through a disastrous first inning and didn't even get the opportunity to go back out.     It didn't seem like Zach Davies would be long for the Diamondbacks rotation with some of the young arms they had waiting in the wings, but a strained oblique has already taken the drama out of it. Drey Jameson, who has been kept warm in long relief, will get the first crack at the job. He has a fastball that pushes triple digits but was leaning all the more on his slider out of the bullpen, delivering some impressive whiff rates. There are some warts, such as shaky control and an inconsistent minor-league track record, but the upside is enough to roll the dice on him.
