Player Outlook
The centerpiece of the Nationals' return for Juan Soto, C.J. Abrams laid the foundation for what could be a long and prosperous MLB career in his first full season with Washington. At 22 years old, Abrams hit 18 homers and stole 47 bases in 151 games, finishing fifth in the majors in the latter category behind Ronald Acuna, Esteury Ruiz, Corbin Carroll and Bobby Witt. Abrams made 71 starts out of the leadoff spot and totaled 83 runs scored. His batting average was .228 or lower in four separate months of the season, and his Statcast page is icy blue, which for some may appear reminiscent of Victor Robles' 2019. No player is a sure thing, but it would be a surprise if Abrams went the way of Robles as Abrams has more speed, more pedigree and more discernible skill already at this stage. Now 23, Abrams will look to build on his 2023 showing as the Nationals' everyday shortstop.

Abrams (finger) will participate in baseball drills Monday and hopes to return to the lineup Tuesday against San Francisco, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Abrams won't be available for Monday's series opener, but if all goes well, his absence should be a relatively short one after suffering a bone bruise of his left pinky finger during Friday's contest. The team should have more information on Abrams' availability after going through baseball activities.

  • Nationals' CJ Abrams: Goes deep in loss

Abrams went 2-for-5 with a solo home run against the Pirates in a loss Thursday. Abrams was the only National to log multiple hits in the contest, and he hit the team's only homer -- a solo shot in the fifth inning. The shortstop has gotten off to a great start this season, slashing .333/.407/.667 with two homers, five RBI, five runs and three steals through six games. His speed remains his biggest asset from a fantasy perspective, but he slugged 18 long balls last year and has enough pop in his bat to exceed that number this season.

  • Nationals' CJ Abrams: Crushes first homer

Abrams went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Reds. Abrams went deep for the first time this season, hitting a monster 429-foot home run to center off Nick Martinez. Abrams' impressive rookie campaign with Washington included him setting the single-season franchise record with 47 steals.
