Grayson Rodriguez's overall numbers were not impressive, but you see a better story once you break down his season. He surprisingly opened the season with Baltimore, but went 2-2 in 10 starts with a 7.35 ERA as he struggled with homers allowing 13 home runs in 45.1 innings around 56 strikeouts and 21 walks. The front office sent him down to AAA Norfolk where he shoved to a 4-0 record with a 1.96 ERA over 8 starts with improved command, which earned him a recall to the big leagues during the All-Star break. From there, all he did was go 5-2 with a 2.58 ERA over his final 13 starts while allowing 3 homers in 76.2 innings with 73 strikeouts and 21 walks. Rodriguez ramped up his fantasy stock with his summer performance, but it comes at a cost as he increased his workload 118% from 2022 to 2023 jumping from 75.2 innings to 165 when factoring in his regular and postseason work. His previous season high was 103 innings in 2021, so keep that in mind as you consider reaching for his upside on draft day.

    Rodriguez (3-1) took the loss Tuesday against the Angels after allowing seven runs on 11 hits and a walk while striking out seven over 4.1 innings. Rodriguez allowed a career-high 11 hits and nearly matched his career high with seven runs allowed. While the 4.1 innings pitched was a season low, he still was able to rack up seven strikeouts, which were his most since April 5. The Angels scored at least a run in each of the first four innings and 10 of the 14 balls put in play against Rodriguez were hard hit. The 24-year-old now sits at a 4.45 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 34:9 K:BB in 28.1 innings and will look to get back on track in a divisional showdown with the Yankees.

Rodriguez leaned heavily on his four-seam fastball in 2023, and while he had a hearty 97.4-mph average on it, opponents also hit .342 and slugged .535 off the pitch. Rodriguez's goal for the two-seamer is to make it more of a running fastball relying on horizontal movement rather than vertical break, since he is not interested in having a sinker. The right-hander is also expecting to use his cutter less -- he threw it just 5.8 percent of the time last season with poor results.     The Orioles called Rodriguez back up to the majors and then basically threw him to the wolves, having him face the Dodgers and Rays in his first week back. The first outing could have gone better, but he basically held the Rays in check over 5 2/3 innings Saturday. He showed improved velocity in both starts and did a better job of mixing in his breaking balls in this one, which helped account for 17 whiffs on 93 pitches. Widely considered to be the best pitching prospect in baseball the past two years, he's looking the part again after a rough first couple months in the majors.
