Player Outlook
Xavier Edwards made his MLB debut in May but didn't receive notable playing time until he was recalled by Miami in September. In total he accrued just 84 plate appearances but showcased his contact and speed potential with a .295 average, 16.7 percent strikeout rate and five steals. He delivered an impressive campaign at Triple-A Jacksonville with seven homers, 32 steals and a .349/.427/.454 slash line, which was a marked improvement on his Double-A performance in 2022. The 24-year-old isn't likely to have a starting job Opening Day in 2024, but he should be able to make the roster out of spring training. Edwards offers fantasy managers speed and a potentially high average, but he'll need to have a regular role in order to be a feasible option.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Moves to injured list

The Marlins placed Edwards on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a left foot infection. The 24-year-old dealt with some foot inflammation in mid-March and was initially expected back in the lineup within a few days, but he's since been diagnosed with an infection. According to MLB.com, Edwards was able to hit on the back fields of camp at the tail end of spring training, so he could be ready to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment soon.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Managing foot issue

Edwards isn't in either lineup for Miami's split-squad games Sunday and was seen wearing a boot on his left foot, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Manager Skip Schumaker said Edwards is dealing with some inflammation but could be back in the lineup "in the next couple of days." The 24-year-old hasn't seen game action since March 5, and every day he's unavailable hurts his chances of cracking the Marlins' Opening Day roster.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Tough battle for roster spot

Edwards might get squeezed off the Marlins' big-league roster to begin the season, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The 24-year-old showed off his speed in his major-league debut last season, slashing .295/.329/.333 over 84 plate appearances and going 5-for-5 on steal attempts. Unfortunately for Edwards, the Marlins have Nick Gordon and Vidal Brujan in camp competing for a utility role as well, and while all three players have similar skill sets, the latter two are out of minor-league options. Unless Edwards significantly outplays one of them this spring, he may have to begin 2024 back at Triple-A Jacksonville.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Swipes two bags

Edwards went 3-for-4 with two steals in Sunday's victory over Milwaukee. In an increasingly rare start, Edwards was able to display his main calling card, speed, as he stole second base twice in the game. The rookie has struggled to see playing time of late, as he's started only twice over the last eight games. Edwards is slashing .303/.333/.348 with three steals, 11 runs and three RBI over 71 big-league appearances.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Added to lineup Tuesday

Edwards was added to the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mets. Edwards will start at second base and bat ninth for the Marlins after Luis Arraez suffered a left ankle sprain during pregame infield practice. It's the first start for Edwards since Friday's series opener versus Atlanta, but he could see a sudden uptick in playing time if Arraez requires an extended absence.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Optioned to Triple-A

Edwards was optioned Tuesday to Triple-A Jacksonville, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Jesus Sanchez (hamstring) has been activated from the injured list in a corresponding roster move ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Padres. Edwards, 23, is 8-for-21 (.381) this year in the majors and should eventually get another opportunity with the Marlins.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Nabs first big-league steal

Edwards went 2-for-3 with a double, a run, an RBI and a stolen base Thursday in a 5-3 win over Washington. Edwards had his best game as a major leaguer in the victory, producing his first multi-hit performance, his first extra-base hit and his first theft. He also recorded his first RBI with a run-scoring single in the fourth inning. Edwards was called back up to the big club Tuesday after going 1-for-6 during his first stint in the majors earlier this month.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Recalled from Triple-A

Miami recalled Edwards from Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday. Edwards will add some versatility to the Marlins' position-player mix with Jazz Chisholm (toe) facing at least a month-long absence. Edwards, 23, has batted .316/.431/.390 with zero homers and eight steals in 26 games this season at the Triple-A level. He stands 1-for-6 through three major-league games.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Receives call-up

The Marlins recalled Edwards from Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Edwards will get his first taste of major-league action with the Marlins at age 23, likely operating in a utility role in Miami's infield. He had slashed .306/.427/.361 with zero home runs and seven stolen bases through 20 games (90 plate appearances) this season at the Triple-A level.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Sent to Marlins

Edwards and JT Chargois were acquired by the Marlins from the Rays on Tuesday in exchange for Marcus Johnson and Santiago Suarez. Edwards was one of Tampa Bay's top prospects but will be flipped in order to acquire a couple minor-league pitchers. He spent 2022 at the Triple-A level and had a .246/.328/.350 slash line with five home runs, 33 RBI and seven stolen bases in 93 games, so a change of scenery certainly won't hurt.

  • Rays' Xavier Edwards: Nearing return

Edwards (shoulder) has been working out at the team's spring training facility and is nearing a return to game action, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Edwards was diagnosed with a shoulder impingement in early April, though the issue was not deemed to be major. It's not clear exactly what activity Edwards has been engaged in while missing game action, but it appears that a return in late April remains realistic.

  • Rays' Xavier Edwards: Dealing with shoulder issue

Edwards has been diagnosed with a shoulder impingement, but the Rays hope he can return to the field by late April, Sam Dykstra of MLB Pipeline reports. Edwards suffered the injury in early March, which kept him out of game action for all of spring training. His absence will now extend into the minor-league regular season, though the team plans for him to return to the lineup with Triple-A Durham in the next few weeks. Edwards is a strong prospect based on an above-average hit tool and excellent speed, but he is blocked by the likes of Wander Franco and Brandon Lowe at the big-league level.

  • Rays' Xavier Edwards: Out with oblique injury

Edwards is opening the year on the 7-day injured list with Double-A Montgomery due to an oblique injury, Sam Dykstra of MLB.com reports. He suffered the injury in minor-league camp, but the Rays don't think the injury is serious. Edwards is expected back sometime this month.

  • Padres' Xavier Edwards: Moves up to High-A

Edwards advanced to High-A Lake Elsinore on Tuesday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Edwards earns a deserved promotion after hitting .336/.392/.414 in 77 games for Low-A Fort Wayne. He makes a lot of contact (10.2 percent strikeout rate) and has excellent speed (20 steals), though he has almost no power (just one career professional home run).

  • Padres' Xavier Edwards: Drills first career homer

Edwards went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and three runs scored for Low-A Fort Wayne on Thursday. Edwards has been raking for the TinCaps all season, but this performance was notable in that he homered in the fourth inning, marking his first long ball at any professional level. Despite the lack of power, he's hit very well throughout his minor-league career, as he's slashing .336/.414/.400 since he was drafted in 2018. If Thursday's long ball is a sign he's set to add more power to his game, it would be a big addition to his profile, as he's already clearly a skilled offensive prospect.

  • Padres' Xavier Edwards: Still raking in Low-A

Edwards went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs for Low-A Fort Wayne on Thursday. Edwards has cooled a little bit since his blazing hot start to the season for the TinCaps that at one point saw him hitting .378, but not by much. This multi-hit effort brings the 19-year-old's slash line up to .349/.402/.410 through 229 at-bats as he continues to toy with Midwest League pitching. He has little left to prove in Low-A, although his youth and lack of power (he still has yet to homer at the professional level) could mean the Padres will wait at least a little while longer before bumping him up a level.
