After a lackluster pro debut in 2022, Ivan Melendez reached Double-A Amarillo last season and showcased the power bat he was noted for at the University of Texas (32 homers in 2021). The 23-year-old returned to an aggressive approach and sent 30 balls over fences in stops at High-A Hillsboro and Amarillo. It's easy to see where his fantasy value lays. In a positive twist, the 6-foot-3, 225-pounder maintained a competent bat as a hitter, posting a .272 average. The first baseman also continued an experiment that began in 2022, when the organization introduced him to third base. He started 57 of 97 games at the hot corner. It wasn't all good news, however, as Melendez's struck out at a 34.3 percent clip and a high BABIP (.361) propped up the average. The Diamondbacks have a pair of 32-year-olds set to begin the season at first and third base, so a path to consistent at-bats could open for Melendez by the time he reaches the majors in 2025 or 2026, although his defense profiles better at first. Being a right-handed batter works in his favor as a potential DH on a lefty-heavy roster.

  • Diamondbacks' Ivan Melendez: Out with ankle issue

Melendez ended his season on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Amarillo with mild left ankle tendonitis, Jake Oliver of SI.com reports. Per the report, Melendez is still expected to be considered for a roster spot in the Arizona Fall League, so the injury is minor. Melendez is one of the premier power hitters in the minors, totaling 30 homers in 96 games between High-A and Double-A. However, as a righty-hitting first baseman with a 0.17 BB/K and 35.3 percent strikeout rate as a 23-year-old at Double-A, there's extreme hit tool risk.

  • Diamondbacks' Ivan Melendez: Activated off minor-league IL

Melendez (hand) was activated off the injured list Thursday at High-A Hillsboro, Sam Dykstra of MiLB.com reports. Melendez began the year on the minor-league IL due to a sore left hand, but it was never a serious concern. A second-round pick by the Diamondbacks in the 2022 MLB Draft, the power-hitting 23-year-old corner infielder will jump from Low-A to High-A to kick off his first full professional season.

  • Diamondbacks' Ivan Melendez: Out with sore hand

Melendez is on the 7-day injured list at Single-A Visalia with a sore left hand, Sam Dykstra of MLB.com reports. He reportedly won't miss much time with the injury. Melendez only played 25 games at Single-A in 2022, but he will likely get pushed to High-A as soon as he earns a bump, as he is already 23 years old and is limited to first base and designated hitter.
