• Angels' Jo Adell: Makes impact in Wednesday's loss

  Adell went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a stolen base in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the Rays. Getting the start in center field and batting seventh, Adell drove a Kevin Kelly sinker over the wall in right field for his first homer of the season. He then added a two-out single and a steal in the eighth, but he snuffed out the rally with a mental error -- he lost track of the count and over-ran the bag on his steal, thinking the batter had struck out. The 25-year-old outfielder is showing signs of finally putting it together in the majors, going 4-for-15 with a 1:2 BB:K, three steals, three RBI and four runs, but mistakes like Wednesday's won't endear him to manager Ron Washington. Still, with Aaron Hicks and Mickey Moniak both struggling at the plate, the door is open for Adell to claim a much larger role.

  Adell went 1-for-2 with a run, an RBI and two stolen bases in Monday's 7-4 win against Miami. Adell began the game on the bench but came into the contest as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning. He flied out in his first at-bat before helping to generate a critical insurance run in the ninth inning when he singled, stole both second and third base, and crossed the plate on a balk. Adell has been used mostly as a pinch hitter or defensive replacement so far this season, as he's started only one game. There's a path for him to see more starts in right field, though Mickey Moniak and Aaron Hicks are also competing for playing time there.

• Angels' Jo Adell: Role for 2024 uncertain

  Adell's standing on the Angels' outfield depth chart became more hazy when the team signed Aaron Hicks to a contract near the end of January, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Adell was already slated for a reserve role before the Hicks signing, as Taylor Ward (face), Mike Trout and Mickey Moniak are the likely starters in the outfield. Bringing in HIcks complicates Adell's role, as the newly signed veteran is expected to play across all three outfield spots and occasionally serve as the team's designated hitter. Adell is out of minor-league options, so he'll need to be on the Opening Day roster or be exposed to waivers. While the 24-year-old had another impressive season in the minors last year, slashing .274/.376/.588 with 24 homers and 57 RBI over 74 Triple-A games, he's yet to find his footing in the majors, posting a .625 OPS with a 35.4 percent strikeout rate over 619 career plate appearances.

  Adell went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's win over the Twins while also drawing a walk. Adell jumped on the first pitch he saw from Sonny Gray in the top of the fourth and launched it over the wall in center field, giving the Angels their only run of the game. The right fielder also drew a free pass on the afternoon and has now walked and scored at least one run in three straight games. The home run was Adell's third of the season and the second in his last three contests.

Adell's pair of games at Salt Lake were his first at any level since July 8, after he was shut down for more than two months while recovering from a left oblique strain. Given his lengthy absence, Adell could end up sticking with Salt Lake through the end of its season next Sunday to regain his timing at the plate. If all goes well, Adell may then be a candidate to return from the 60-day injured list for the final week of the Angels' season.

  Adell (oblique) reported to Triple-A Salt Lake last week to continue his rehab program, but he has yet to receive clearance for game action, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. "Where that puts him on a timeline for [a return] this year, I'm not sure," manager Phil Nevin said of Adell. "We'll see how the next few days go for him." Adell has been on the shelf since July 14 with a left oblique strain, but he resumed baseball activities at the Angels' spring training facility in Arizona in late August and appears set to continue those workouts in Utah. The Angels will presumably reassess Adell over the weekend before determining if he'll be ready to play in rehab games next week for the final six games of Salt Lake's season. If Adell is able to take part in those rehab games without incident, he could then be a realistic option to return from the Angels' 60-day injured list for the final week of the MLB season.

  Adell (oblique) has started hitting in the cage, and there is some hope he could return this season, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. He will be eligible to come off the 60-day injured list Sept. 7, but Adell probably needs at least a brief rehab assignment before he joins the big club; therefore, a mid-September return seems more likely than one in the early part of the month. Once fully healthy and active, it seems likely the Angels would give Adell opportunities down the stretch for internal evaluation purposes. Adell has a .271/.376/.580 slash line with 23 home runs and nine steals in 72 games at Triple-A this year. He struck out six times in 14 plate appearances in the big leagues.

It appears Adell will stick around with the big club for a while since Trout is expected to miss at least a month, though it's not certain that he'll be an everyday player since Mickey Moniak, Taylor Ward and Hunter Renfroe have regular roles in the team's outfield.
