Player Outlook
Dany Jimenez secured a save in Oakland's season opener, but that was the only one he'd tally during the 2023 campaign. The 30-year-old missed nearly four months of action with a right shoulder strain; the same injury that forced him to miss a significant chunk of the 2022 season. As a result, Jimenez was limited to just 23.1 innings across 25 appearances. When healthy, Jimenez's slider is extremely effective, but he also has trouble finding the strike zone. He has a 14.2 percent walk rate for his career and a below-average strikeout rate, which doesn't fit the typical closer profile. However, Jimenez has demonstrated upside in the past, including 15 scoreless outings over his last 17 appearances to close out last season. Oakland has afforded him with high-leverage opportunities when healthy, but his persistent shoulder issues dim his prospects for 2024.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: Only one hiccup this spring

Jimenez, who fired a scoreless sixth inning Thursday against the Cubs during which he recorded two strikeouts, owns a 3.18 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 7:2 K:BB across 5.2 innings over six Cactus League appearances this spring. The right-hander hasn't been scored upon in five of his exhibition outings, only slipping up against the Brewers last Friday by allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk over one inning. Jimenez has garnered three wins, 12 saves and 11 holds across 59 appearances over the last two seasons with the Athletics, despite dealing with some injuries over that span. If he remains healthy, the 30-year-old should be in line for a heavy workload, one that could include more save opportunities than he's seen previously, as manager Mark Kotsay has indicated that Mason Miller will be eased gradually into closing duties.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: Takes second loss Wednesday

Jimenez (0-2) took the loss against the Twins on Wednesday, allowing two earned runs on three hits and a wild pitch over one inning. Jimenez wasn't up to the task of preserving the 4-4 tie he inherited when entering in the eighth, allowing Max Kepler and Trevor Larnach to reach safely via a single and double, respectively, to lead off the frame, before advancing the latter to third on a wild pitch and then allowing him to cross the plate via Ryan Jeffers' run-scoring sacrifice fly. The right-hander's stumble snapped an extended stretch of strong performances for Jimenez, who'd generated scoreless appearances in 13 of his previous 14 trips to the mound, including six straight.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: Back with big club

The Athletics recalled Jimenez from Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday. Jimenez saved 11 games for Oakland a season ago, but he's struggled to return to form in 2023 after suffering a strained right shoulder in mid-April that cost him significant time. He was activated from the 60-day injured list earlier this month but made just one appearance out of the big-league bullpen before he was optioned to Las Vegas. Since reporting to Triple-A, Jimenez has looked much sharper, striking out nine over 4.1 no-hit innings across four appearances to earn the call back to Oakland. Trevor May looks to have solidified himself as Oakland's closer for the moment, but Jimenez could quickly rise up the depth chart and emerge as a key setup man.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: First rehab appearance set

Jimenez (shoulder) is scheduled to make his first rehab appearance for Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday, the Associated Press reports. The right-hander is slated to be capped at 20 pitches in that initial outing, which will come three months to the day he was placed on the injured list with a right shoulder strain. Jimenez's ability to get through a 15-pitch live batting practice session without issues Saturday apparently gave the Athletics the confidence to have him return to game action, but the 29-year-old is likely set to spend at least a couple of weeks down on the farm given how long he's been sidelined.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: Scheduled for live BP session

Jimenez (shoulder) will throw live batting practice Saturday, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports. After earning his only save of the season Opening Day, Jimenez had his season interrupted by a right shoulder strain in mid-April. After a fairly long shutdown period, he began ramping up and now appears to be on the verge of embarking on a minor-league rehab assignment. He's no sure thing to return to a high-leverage role, but it's possible he could end up handling ninth-inning duties if the A's trade Trevor May. Jimenez is not arbitration eligible until 2025, making him less likely to be dealt in a fire sale.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: Transferred to 60-day IL

The Athletics transferred Jimenez (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday. The transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Mason Miller, who was summoned from Triple-A Las Vegas in advance of his first MLB start Wednesday versus the Cubs. Jimenez had been placed on the 15-day IL on Tuesday with the right shoulder strain, but his move to the 60-day IL now ensures that he'll be sidelined until at least the latter part of June. Trevor May was also placed on the 15-day IL on Wednesday while dealing with anxiety, likely leaving Zach Jackson as the top candidate to pick up any save opportunities the Athletics may face.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: Can't hold down save Sunday

Jimenez was charged with a blown save in Sunday's loss to the Mets after allowing one run on one hit and three walks over just a third of an inning. Jimenez was able to get Francsico Lindor to ground out to begin the ninth before Pete Alonso tied things up with a monstrous blast to center field. Jimenez then proceeded to implode, walking three straight batters before being replaced by Sam Moll who wound up bailing him out after getting Eduardo Escobar to ground into a 6-4-3 double play. The 29-year-old has just one save on the year with the A's having lost 10 of their last 11, but still seems to be in the late-inning mix. After Sunday's outing, Jimenez owns a 5.40 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and a 4:6 K:BB over 6.2 innings.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: A possible option for saves

Jimenez, Trevor May and Jeurys Familia could all be used in closer situations this season, Athletics manager Mark Kotsay told Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle on Sunday. JImenez led the team with 11 saves last season, but his year ended with a shoulder injury and he's had velocity issues this spring. The 29-year-old could emerge as the team's best option if he's able to regain his velocity, but for now he's a mediocre reliever in a committee situation on a bad team.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: Struggling with velocity

Jimenez has struggled with his velocity this spring, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Jimenez was throwing just 88-89 mph in his first Cactus League appearance before bumping it up to 91-93 mph his second time out. That's still down a bit from what he threw in 2022, which is especially concerning since he ended last season with a shoulder injury. Jimenez entered camp as arguably the favorite to close for the Athletics, but he'll probably need to show better velocity in order for the team to trust him in the role. Trevor May, Zach Jackson and Domingo Acevedo are alternatives for the closer job.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: Expects to avoid surgery

Jimenez said Sunday that he's not expected to require surgery on his strained right shoulder and is optimistic that he'll be ready to go for spring training, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Jimenez's season came to an end Saturday, when the Athletics placed him on the 60-day injured list due to the shoulder injury. Fortunately, Jimenez looks like he'll be able to treat the injury through rest and rehab, but the time he'll miss down the stretch could prove costly in his bid to open the 2023 campaign as the Athletics' closer. When healthy, Jimenez had served as the Athletics' primary end gamer in 2022 and notched a team-high 11 saves to go along with respectable ratios (3.41 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 11 K-BB%), but his lack of extensive MLB experience and uncertain health coming off the shoulder injury hardly make him a safe bet to regain the closer's role next spring.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: Placed on 60-day IL

Jimenez was placed on the 60-day injured list Saturday with a right shoulder srain. Jimenez last pitched Wednesday versus the Marlins and apparently left the appearance a little worse for wear, as his move to the 60-day IL with the strained shoulder ensures he'll miss the rest of the season. He finishes the 2022 campaign with a 3.41 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 34 strikeouts, 11 saves and four holds over 34.1 innings in 34 appearances with the Athletics. Austin Pruitt had his contract selected from Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday and will replace Jimenez in Oakland's bullpen.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: Back from injured list

Jimenez (shoulder) was activated from the 15-day injured list Tuesday. Jimenez has been sidelined by a strained shoulder for the past six weeks, but he'll rejoin the Athletics' active roster Tuesday after making two minor-league rehab appearances. The 28-year-old has a 4.38 ERA and is 11-for-13 in save chances this season, and he should be in the ninth-inning mix alongside A.J. Puk and Zach Jackson after Lou Trivino was traded to the Yankees.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: Strikes out side in rehab debut

Jimenez (shoulder) fired a perfect inning during which he struck out the side in Triple-A Las Vegas' loss to Albuquerque on Friday. Jimenez made his rehab debut as expected and pounded 12 of his 16 pitches in for strikes during his dominant frame. The right-hander is slated to make another relief appearance with the Aviators on Sunday, and the the Associated Press reports manager Mark Kotsay will then meet with Jimenez to determine next steps.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: Completes bullpen session

Jimenez (shoulder) completed a 30-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Jimenez has been sidelined just over a month with a strained right shoulder, but he appears to be nearing the final stages of his rehab program. The right-hander is next expected to face live batters, after which he could receive clearance to begin a minor-league rehab assignment.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: Plays catch Monday

Jimenez (shoulder) played catch for the first time in his recovery process Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. The right-hander has been on the injured list since June 21, and Monday's development naturally represents a significant benchmark. How Jimenez's shoulder responds to Monday's activity will determine how much of a ramp-up his throwing program is subject to over the coming days.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: Shut down with shoulder strain

The Athletics placed Jimenez on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right shoulder strain, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The injury is a tough break for the rookie reliever, who has emerged as Oakland's closer this season with 11 saves in 13 opportunities. As a result of his placement on the IL, Jimenez won't be eligible to return until July 4, and it's possible his absence lingers beyond that if he isn't cleared to resume throwing within the next few days. While Jimenez is on the shelf, A.J. Puk, Domingo Acevedo and Zach Jackson represent potential candidates to pick up saves.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: Blows save, snags win

Jimenez (2-2) allowed a run on no hits and one walk in one inning, blowing a save but earning the win Sunday versus the Rangers. Jimenez walked Marcus Semien, who stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored the game-tying run on a wild pitch. Luckily for Jimenez, the Athletics responded in the bottom of the ninth with a walkoff single from Jed Lowrie. This was Jimenez's first blown save in 11 opportunities this year, as he's been excellent while holding onto the closer role for the Athletics. He's posted a 2.25 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 21:8 K:BB across 20 innings.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: Converts ninth save

Jimenez saved Tuesday's 7-5 win against the Mariners, allowing one walk while striking out two in the ninth inning. Jimenez retired the first two Mariners in the ninth inning before walking Adam Frazier on four pitches, but he was able to strike out Julio Rodriguez to end the game. The 28-year-old rookie only tossed seven of 14 pitches for strikes, but an impressive four were of the swinging variety as Jimenez has now recorded 19 strikeouts in 17.2 innings and has converted all of his save chances.

  • Athletics' Dany Jimenez: Records sixth save

Jimenez struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Thursday against the Tigers. Jimenez set down the side on 14 pitches to record his sixth save of the season. He now has each of the Athletics' last five saves, and he appears to be the most trusted option in the ninth inning over Lou Trivino. Jimenez has proven reliable early on in the campaign, turning in 13 scoreless innings while posting a 15:5 K:BB.
