  Steer went 3-for-4 with a walk, stolen base and two runs scored in Saturday's 7-5 win over the Angels. Steer isn't as flashy as teammate Elly De La Cruz, but he's been just as productive to open the season. Steer leads the Reds in average (.324), on-base percentage (.435), RBI (18), hits (23) and is second only to De La Cruz in OPS (.998). The stolen base was Steer's fourth in 20 games, putting him on pace to surpass last season's 15 thefts over 156 contests.

  Steer started at first base for an unavailable Christian Encarnacion-Strand (illness) in Wednesday's 5-1 loss to Seattle. He went 0-for-3. Steer was one of eight Reds in the order to go hitless against Mariner pitching. Elly De La Cruz's second-inning home run off Bryce Miller was the lone offense mustered by Cincinnati. Reds manager David Bell wasn't specific on Encarnacion-Strand's symptoms but mentioned he hadn't been feeling well ahead of the series in Seattle. Steer is 1-for-14 over the last four games but still has a .992 OPS on the season.

• Reds' Spencer Steer: Cracks go-ahead grand slam

  Steer went 2-for-5 with a double, home run, four RBI and two runs in Monday's win over the Phillies. Steer stepped to the plate in the top of the 10th inning Monday against Connor Brogdon and hit a go-ahead 383-foot home run to give Cincinnati the lead for good. It was Steer's first career grand slam. The second-year Red looks to build upon his strong rookie campaign last season in which he slashed .271/.356/.464 with 23 home runs and 86 RBI.

Steer made a third consecutive start at second base in the wake of Matt McLain's shoulder injury, which will land him on the injured list to start the season. The Reds have other options for the keystone, including Jonathan India and Santiago Espinal, who was acquired via trade Wednesday. Steer had been scheduled to see most of his time in the outfield this season, but McLain's injury and third baseman Noelvi Marte's 80-game suspension could alter the outfield plans for Steer.

• Reds' Spencer Steer: Slated for outfield duty

  Steer is in line to play regularly in the outfield following the Reds' signing of Jeimer Candelario, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Cincinnati made a crowded infield situation even more crowded with its acquisition of Candelario. Steer is an infielder by trade, but he made 38 starts in the outfield in 2023 and would appear pegged for regular left field duty in 2024. Even with Steer slated to play mostly in the outfield next season, the Reds would still appear to have at least one more infielder than they have starting spots. Jonathan India remains a good bet to be traded.
