Steer is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Marlins. Steer started at first base the past two days for his first action in the field this season, but he'll take a seat Tuesday for the second time in Cincinnati's past four games. Jeimer Candelario will start at first base and bat sixth versus Miami righty Edward Cabrera.... See More ... See Less

Reds' Spencer Steer: Makes first start in field
Steer started at first base and went 2-for-6 with a walk, a double, an RBI and three runs scored in Sunday's 24-2 win over the Orioles. Steer, who has been limited to designated hitter due to a right shoulder injury, made his first start in the field Sunday. He entered the contest batting .111 with three RBI through 15 games, suggesting the shoulder had a negative impact. It's unclear if Steer is able to play more than just first base. He's served at third base and in the outfield in past seasons.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Spencer Steer: Not starting Saturday
Steer is not in Cincinnati's starting lineup against Baltimore on Saturday. Steer has struggled at the plate while working through a sore shoulder, going 1-for-23 with two runs scored and 10 strikeouts over his last six games. He'll begin Saturday's contest on the bench with Gavin Lux serving as the designated hitter.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Spencer Steer: In offensive slumber
Steer went 0-for-4 with a walk and four strikeouts in Friday's 8-3 win over Baltimore. Steer's in the middle of a 1-for-23 stretch over the last six games, including 10 strikeouts (40 percent). He's limited to DH duties due to a sore shoulder, but Steer has begun throwing this week and could soon return to the field. That would give manager Terry Francona another option at first base while Christian Encarnacion-Strand (back) is on the 10-day injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Spencer Steer: Taking seat Thursday
Steer is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Mariners. Steer has been limited to designated-hitter duties thus far as he works his way back from a right shoulder injury, but manager Terry Francona said that the 27-year-old is ramping up his throwing and is almost ready to play first base, according to Charlie Goldsmith of the Dayton Daily News. It's not clear when Steer might be ready to play additional positions, however. Austin Hays will get a start at DH on Thursday while Steer rests.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Spencer Steer: Ramping up throwing
Steer (shoulder) will begin working on throws from first base over the next few days, Charlie Goldsmith of the Dayton Daily News reports. Steer has been limited to designated hitter duty in the early going this season, as he's still working his way back from a right shoulder injury that first cropped up last season. There's no timeline for when Steer will be able to handle defensive duties, but he's making progress.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Spencer Steer: Not starting Saturday
Steer isn't in the starting lineup for Saturday's matchup against Milwaukee. Steer was originally out of the lineup for Friday's series opener, but he was inserted as the Reds' DH after Matt McLain was removed due to a hamstring issue. Steer went 0-for-3 with a walk in the contest to lower his season batting average to a meager .048, and he's getting an opportunity to reset Saturday. McLain is back after Friday's absence and is starting at DH against the Brewers in Steer's stead.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Spencer Steer: Enters lineup after late scratch
Steer is hitting second and serving as the designated hitter Friday against the Brewers. Steer was originally out of the lineup, but Matt McLain (hamstring) was scratched roughly an hour before first pitch. After the Reds reconfigured the order, Steer is now set to occupy a prominent spot in the lineup, and he'll look to get on track after beginning the season with only one hit across 18 at-bats.... Reds' Spencer Steer: Opening season on IL
The Reds will place Steer (shoulder) on the injured list to start the regular season, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Steer played in a minor-league game Thursday -- his first competitive action of any kind since February -- but it appears he won't have enough time to prepare for Opening Day. He'll most likely head to one of Cincinnati's minor-league affiliates on a rehab assignment to pick up at-bats before rejoining the Reds.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Spencer Steer: Starting throwing program Tuesday
Steer (shoulder) will begin a throwing program Tuesday, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Steer played through a right shoulder strain late last season and the injury has lingered this spring, limiting him to only seven plate appearances at designated hitter. While his readiness for Opening Day seems unlikely, the Reds are not ready to rule him out yet. Wittenmyer notes that a cortisone injection has knocked out the inflammation in Steer's shoulder and the focus lately has been correcting bad habits created by compensating for the injury. The Reds likely would want Steer available to play the field in order to avoid the IL, and it's uncertain when he might be cleared for that.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Spencer Steer: Undergoes exam
Steer (shoulder) received positive results after being re-examined by the team's medical staff Saturday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Steer was examined for the first time since receiving a cortisone injection in his right shoulder. Cincinnati manager Terry Francona said Sunday that he'll work on range-of-motion activities and estimated Steer should progress to hitting off a tee by mid-week.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Spencer Steer: May open season on IL
Manager Terry Francona said Saturday that Steer (shoulder) could begin the season on the injured list, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Steer was scratched from the lineup ahead of Saturday's game against the Padres due to his injured shoulder, and he elected to receive a cortisone shot after an examination, per Wittenmyer. This will force the 27-year-old to pause all activities for the next few days, and there's no telling at this point how long it will be before he's cleared to play in games.... See More ... Reds' Spencer Steer: Will DH initially
Steer (shoulder) will serve as the designated hitter in one of Saturday's split-squad games, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. Steer is nursing a shoulder injury but is expected to begin throwing soon, per manager Terry Francona. Steer might also play first base with the caveat that he's not to throw until he's ready. Steer, who made 100 starts in the outfield (98 in left field) last season and is expected to be in the outfield mix in 2025, will need to go through a progression before playing there.... Reds' Spencer Steer: Sitting Saturday
Steer isn't in Cincinnati's lineup for Saturday's game against Pittsburgh. Steer will get a day to rest Saturday after slashing .190/.301/.365 with six RBI across 73 plate appearances since the start of September. His absence will allow Will Benson to pick up a start in left field and bat ninth.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Spencer Steer: Reaches 20-homer mark
Steer went 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run home run in Tuesday's 6-5 win over Atlanta. Steer's two-run shot in the seventh inning proved to be the game-winning knock, as Cincinnati completed the comeback from a 5-1 deficit. The home run was Steer's 20th, marking the second consecutive year he's crossed that threshold and giving him his first 20-20 season.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Spencer Steer: Logs steal in win
Steer went 0-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base in Monday's 5-3 win over the Astros. Steer logged his 23rd steal of the season as part of a double steal in the eighth inning. He's batting just .216 in the second half, but Steer's utility keeps him in the starting lineup. He's started at five different positions and batted at seven different spots in the order.... Reds' Spencer Steer: Closing in on 20-20 club
Steer went 1-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's 11-7 win over Toronto. Steer swatted a two-run home run in the fourth inning, which propelled the Reds' comeback from an early 6-0 deficit. It was his 19th homer of the season to go along with 21 steals, leaving Steer just shy of his first 20-20 season.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Spencer Steer: Snaps homer drought
Steer went 2-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Friday's 8-3 loss to the Brewers. Steer turned on the first pitch he saw to lead off the seventh inning with his 16th home run of the season. It was the first homer in 19 games for Steer, who's experienced a cold second half. He batted .141/.179/.234 over the first 16 games following the All-Star break before logging a pair of two-hit games Thursday and Friday.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Spencer Steer: Heading to bench Wednesday
Steer is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins. Steer has went without a hit in his last three games and has gone 1-for-22 over his last six contests, so he'll be given Wednesday off to clear his head. He had been in the lineup for every game dating back to May 22 but will see a streak of 64 consecutive starts come to an end. Santiago Espinal will take his spot in left field.... See More ... Reds' Spencer Steer: Expected to move to LF
Steer is expected to move to left field once Ty France joins the Reds, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Cincinnati acquired France on Monday, but he's not yet with the club. He is expected to be the team's primary first baseman. Collectively, the Reds' first basemen are batting .216 (24th in MLB) with a .631 OPS (28th), although that isn't the fault of Steer, who has played 53 games there in 2024; underperforming players like Christian Encarnacion-Strand (wrist, 60-day IL) and Jeimer Candelario are the main culprits. Bringing in France allows manager David Bell to deploy Steer in left field, which has been another unproductive spot in the lineup.... See More ... See Less
