Player Outlook
Aaron Civale was traded from Cleveland to Tampa Bay for first base prospect Kyle Manzardo straight up at the deadline. His strikeout rate jumped from 19 percent to 29.3 percent and his walk rate dropped from 7.2 percent to 5.6 percent after the trade. Don't downgrade him because of his 5.36 ERA in 10 starts with the Rays. He had a 3.26 xFIP over that unlucky stretch and his 23.7 K-BB% in 45.1 innings after the trade was an elite mark. In fact it was similar to his new teammate Zach Eflin's 23.0 K-BB% on the season, and Civale happens to have almost an identical repertoire to Eflin. Perhaps that's why the Rays targeted him. Civale missed almost two months early in the season with an oblique strain and still tallied 133.1 innings, including his rehab assignment. He shouldn't have any notable workload restrictions in 2024.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Fans eight in quality start

Civale came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 7-6 extra-innings win over the Angels, giving up three runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out eight without walking a batter. The right-hander tossed 65 of 101 pitches for strikes and generated 31 called or swinging strikes, but homers by Mickey Moniak and Logan O'Hoppe in the fourth inning had Civale in line for his second loss of the year until the Rays rallied in the ninth inning, eventually winning in the 13th. Civale has delivered three quality starts in his first four trips to the mound this season, and he'll carry a 2.74 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 26:4 K:BB through 23 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road this weekend against the Yankees.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Limits Angels to two earned runs

Civale (2-1) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk across five innings against the Angels. He struck out four. Both of Civale's earned runs came in the first inning when Mike Trout went yard for a two-run homer that plated Mickey Moniak. The right-hander is off to an excellent start to the 2024 campaign, with four combined earned runs through three starts and 18 strikeouts across 17 innings. However, Civale has surrendered a home run in all three of his starts. He's tentatively scheduled for a rematch with the Halos on Monday in his next projected start.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Hard-luck loss vs. Rangers

Civale (1-1) took the loss Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over six innings against the Rangers. He struck out eight. Civale was excellent Wednesday, allowing just a solo home run to Corey Seager in the sixth inning. However, the Rays couldn't get anything going against Nathan Eovaldi on the other side, sticking Civale with his first loss. The 28-year-old right-hander's allowed just two runs in 12 innings through his first two starts, while showing more of a strikeout punch than he has in the past. Civale made 23 starts last year between Tampa Bay and Cleveland, going 7-5 with a 3.46 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 116:33 K:BB. He looks like a dependable fantasy option.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Cruises to first win of season

Civale (1-0) picked up the win Friday over the Blue Jays, allowing one run on four hits and a walk in six innings. He struck out six. A George Springer solo shot in the third inning accounted for the only damage off Civale. The 28-year-old right-hander tossed 53 of 86 pitches for strikes but only generated five swinging strikes, a reminder that he's never delivered big strikeouts numbers in his career over a prolonged stretch. Civale did post a 58:11 K:BB over 45.1 innings after joining the Rays last season from the Guardians, but that came with a 5.36 ERA thanks to seven homers allowed, and a 1.37 WHIP.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Settles with Rays at $4.9 million

The Rays and Civale avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $4.9 million contract Thursday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. It's a substantial salary bump for Civale, who was arbitration-eligible for a second time. The right-hander held a 5.36 ERA over 45.1 innings after being acquired via trade by the Rays at last year's deadline, but a 58:11 K:BB provides reason for optimism. He'll be a key piece in the Rays' rotation in 2024.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Abbreviated outing Friday

Civale (7-5) took the loss Friday as the Rays were routed 11-4 by the Blue Jays, giving up one run on two hits and two walks over 1.2 innings. He struck out three. With Tampa Bay already locked into the top wild-card spot in the American League and likely to face Toronto to begin the playoffs next week, manager Kevin Cash elected not to give the opposition a good look at any of the starting pitchers the Rays might be using. Civale got the hook after 40 pitches (21 strikes), while Zack Littell (35 pitches) and Taj Bradley (21 pitches) also saw action out of the bullpen. All three right-handers figure to be available when the AL Wild Card Series begins Tuesday. Civale finishes the regular season with a 3.46 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 116:33 K:BB through 122.1 innings split between Tampa Bay and Cleveland, but his ratios since being acquired by the Rays (5.36 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 45.1 IP) are far less impressive.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Lined up for Friday

Civale (illness) is scheduled to start Friday's series opener versus the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Civale needed a couple extra days of rest between starts after coming down with an illness earlier this week, but he's good to go heading into the Rays' final series of the regular season. The 28-year-old has registered a 5.36 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 55:9 K:BB in 43.2 innings (nine starts) for the Rays since being acquired from the Guardians on July 31.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Lasts just three frames in loss

Civale (7-4) took the loss against the Angels on Wednesday, allowing six runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out seven batters over three innings. Civale fell behind 2-0 in the first inning and gave up four more runs in the second. Though he bounced back to strike out three batters in a scoreless third, the right-hander wasn't allowed to return for the fourth. This was Civale's shortest outing of the campaign and snapped his streak of seven straight starts of at least five frames. One positive takeaway is that Civale continued his recent strikeout binge -- he's compiled 44 punchouts over his past 28.1 frames covering six starts.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Eight punchouts in no-decision

Civale did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk over five innings against the Orioles. He struck out eight. After surrendering solo home runs in the second and fourth frames, Civale escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fifth, limiting the damage to just one run in the inning. The 28-year-old hasn't thrown more than 5.1 innings in any of his last five starts and despite an impressive 13.1 K/9, posting a 5.33 ERA across 25.1 innings during that stretch that has caused his season-long ERA to rise above 3.00 for the first time since early July. He will likely take the mound next in an upcoming home matchup with the Angels.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Four runs in no-decision

Civale did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks over five innings against the Mariners. He struck out three. The right-hander struggled right out of the gate Saturday, loading the bases before recording any outs and surrendering three runs in the first frame followed by a solo shot fromJulio Rodriguez in the second. Civale then settled in, holding Seattle scoreless over his final three innings of work, and he avoided taking the loss thanks to Tampa Bay's late rally. The 28-year-old hadn't allowed more than three runs in any of his 12 starts since June 25, accumulating a 5-1 record with a 2.51 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and a solid 62:12 K:BB across 68 innings during that stretch. Civale currently lines up for a tough road matchup against the Orioles next week.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Fans 12 in no-decision

Civale allowed three runs on two hits and three walks over 5.1 innings in Monday's loss to Boston. He struck out 12 and did not factor in the decision. Civale gave up just one run through five frames but was charged with two more after Chris Devenski allowed a three-run shot to Triston Casas in the sixth inning. Civale's 12-strikeout performance set a new career high and marked his first double-digit strikeout performance since last season. He's allowed three or fewer runs in each of his first six appearances with the Rays, posting a 3.82 ERA and a 37:5 K:BB during that stretch. Civale is currently in line for a home matchup with the Mariners this weekend.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Solid outing in win

Civale (7-3) earned the win Tuesday, allowing two runs on seven hits over five innings against Miami. He struck out five without issuing a walk. Civale found himself in a bases-loaded jam in the first inning but managed to escape the frame, limiting the damage to just one run. The 28-year old hurler then gave up a solo homer to Jazz Chisholm in the third and would eventually exit the game down 2-1 after five. Luckily, Tampa Bay's bats came alive in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs to take a 4-2 lead and secure Civale his second win since joining the Rays at the trade deadline. In his nine second-half starts, the righty now owns a 2.72 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 39:8 K:BB across 49.2 innings. He is tentatively slated to face the Red Sox at home early next week.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Fans nine in no-decision

Civale came away with a no-decision Wednesday in the Rays' 6-5 extra-inning win over the Rockies, giving up three runs on four hits over five-plus innings. He struck out nine without walking a batter. It was Civale's most dominant performance since joining Tampa Bay at the trade deadline, as he generated an eye-popping 35 called or swinging strikes on only 80 pitches. Despite that effort, he was in line for his fourth loss of the year after putting the first two batters aboard in the top of the sixth inning and watching both come around to score after he'd left the mound, but a late rally by the Rays got the right-hander off the hook. Civale has a 3.54 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 20:2 K:BB through 20.1 innings in August, and he'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which is likely to come early next week in Miami.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Blanks San Francisco in win

Civale (6-3) earned the win Wednesday, allowing five hits and a walk over six scoreless innings against the Giants. He struck out five. It was the first win for Civale since he was traded from Cleveland at the deadline. He's now 1-1 through his first three starts with Tampa while allowing five runs over 15.1 innings. Overall, Civale's ERA is down to 2.44 with a 1.12 WHIP and 69:24 K:BB across 16 starts (92.1 innings) between the Rays and Guardians. He's currently lined up for a favorable home matchup with the Rockies in his next outing.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Takes loss in team debut

Civale dropped to 5-3 in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Tigers after allowing three earned runs on nine hits over 4.1 innings while striking out four. Civale allowed a leadoff single in each of the first four innings, which led to one run coming across for Detroit in the second, followed by two more in the fourth. The newly-acquired right-hander was then relieved by Kevin Kelly in the fifth after surrendering a one-out double to Kerry Carpenter, marking the first time that Civale's failed to make it through at least five innings since June 14. He had given up two or fewer runs in six straight starts coming in, and the nine hits he allowed Saturday matched his season high.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Debuting for new team Saturday

Civale is listed as the Rays' probable pitcher for Saturday's game against the Tigers at Comerica Park. Civale will draw a favorable matchup for his Rays debut after Tampa Bay acquired him from Cleveland on Monday in exchange for first base prospect Kyle Manzardo. Prior to the trade, the 28-year-old right-hander had quietly been in the midst of a stellar season, posting a 2.34 ERA and 1.04 WHIP over 77 innings with the Guardians. Though Civale has excelled at limiting walks and neutralizing hard contact for most of his career, fantasy managers should view him as more of a middle-of-rotation arm than the ace that his ratios suggest he's been thus far. He's benefited from some good fortune on balls in play (.242 BABIP, career .274 BABIP) and especially flyballs (5.6 HR/FB%, career 12.4 HR/FB%), and he's striking out a career-low 19 percent of the batters he's faced.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Lands in Tampa Bay

The Rays acquired Civale from the Guardians on Monday in exchange for first baseman Kyle Manzardo (undisclosed), Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Tampa Bay will surrender one of its top position prospects in Manzardo to bolster its injury-laden rotation with the addition of Civale, who is under club control through 2025 and has quietly performed as a frontline starter since making his return from the 15-day injured list June 2. Over his final 11 starts with Cleveland, Civale submitted a 2.24 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 50:20 K:BB in 64.1 innings. Though most of Civale's underlying numbers this season (3.67 xERA, 3.55 FIP) suggest that he's pitching over his head, his stellar control and command have long helped him make up for a lack of swing-and-miss stuff. He made his last start with Cleveland on Sunday, so he's unlikely to make his Rays debut until this weekend's series in Detroit.

  • Guardians' Aaron Civale: Blanks White Sox

Civale (5-2) earned the win Sunday over the White Sox after tossing six shutout innings while allowing three hits and two walks. He struck out four. Civale worked an efficient outing after needing only 81 pitches to complete six frames. He allowed five hits or less in each of his six starts in July and capped things off this month with his fourth quality start. There have been rumblings that Civale could be on the move after his recent success. He finishes July going 3-0 with a 1.45 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 25:7 K:BB in 37.1 innings. He's tentatively lined up for another weekend start against the White Sox.

  • Guardians' Aaron Civale: Tosses gem against Royals

Civale (4-2) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over eight innings against the Royals. He struck out five. Civale logged his longest start of 2023 on Tuesday, allowing one run over eight frames on 93 pitches. He was especially effective at limiting power, holding the Royals without an extra-base hit. Though Civale hasn't been a strong producer in the strikeout column (6.85 K/9), he owns an impressive 2.54 ERA and a 0.6 HR/9 through 71 innings in 2023. Civale will look to continue his breakout campaign in his next projected start, which is expected to come against one of MLB's worst offenses in the White Sox.

  • Guardians' Aaron Civale: Fans nine in third win

Civale (3-2) picked up the win in Friday's 3-0 victory over the Royals, scattering two hits over seven scoreless innings. He struck out nine without walking a batter. The right-hander put together his best performance of the season and won for the first time in nearly a month, generating 34 called or swinging strikes over his 100 pitches. Civale has delivered quality starts in three of his last four outings, and since rejoining the rotation at the beginning of June he sports a 2.48 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 36:14 K:BB through 40 innings.
