• Twins' Chris Paddack: Shuts down White Sox

  Paddack (1-1) allowed six hits over seven shutout innings Monday, striking out 10 and earning a win over the White Sox. Paddack retired the first 10 batters he faced and, outside of a bases-loaded situation in the fourth inning, didn't face much trouble. It was a dramatic turnaround after the Orioles crushed him for nine runs in his last outing. Monday's start set new season bests for Paddack in nearly every category, including innings and punchouts. He pulled his ERA down to 5.57 with a 19:5 K:BB through 21 innings. Paddack is lined up for a road matchup with the Angels this weekend.

• Twins' Chris Paddack: Hit hard in Baltimore

  Paddack (0-1) took the loss Tuesday against the Orioles, allowing nine runs on 12 hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out two. While Paddack's 5.1 innings pitched were a season high, he didn't miss many bats, allowing three runs in the second inning and another four in the fourth en route to his first loss of the year. The 28-year-old Paddack's ERA is up to 8.36 with a 2.07 WHIP and 9:5 K:BB through his first three starts (14 innings) this year. He's currently slated to face the White Sox at home in his next outing.

However, the right-hander allowed a pair of hits in the fifth and ultimately left the contest one out away from qualifying for the win. Paddack's allowed four runs on 12 hits while striking out seven through his first two starts this season. He's currently in line for a tough road matchup against the Orioles in his next outing.

Making his first big-league start in nearly two years, Paddack threw 82 pitches (47 strikes) and uncorked two wild pitches in an inefficient performance, but he mostly limited hard contact aside from a Rhys Hoskins solo shot in the fourth inning. The 28-year-old right-hander is looking to get his career back on track after missing almost all of the last two seasons while recovering from his second Tommy John surgery, but he hasn't thrown more than 108.1 innings in a season since 2019. Paddack lines up to make his next start at home early next week against the Dodgers.

  Paddack has added a cutter to his arsenal and threw it four times in his spring debut Friday against the University of Minnesota, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Paddack threw 1.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts and a walk. "I've seen guys throw it, but I've never thrown it," Paddack said. "I'm trying to learn how to use it in certain counts, aggressive hitters, behind in the count, whatever that might be." After making a full recovery from his May 2022 Tommy John surgery, Paddack returned to action for the Twins in late September and struck out eight while allowing three earned runs across five innings over two relief appearances. He then struck out six over 3.2 scoreless frames during Minnesota's postseason run. Adding another pitch to his repertoire could help him return to his 2019 form, when he had a 3.33 ERA and 26.9 percent strikeout rate over 140.2 innings for the Padres. While he's penciled in as the No. 4 starter, Paddack's innings may be limited in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery.

After making a full recovery from his May 2022 Tommy John surgery, Paddack returned to action for the Twins in late September and struck out eight while allowing three earned runs across five innings between his two relief appearances during the regular season, then struck out six over 3.2 scoreless frames during Minnesota's postseason run. Now nearly two years removed from elbow surgery and entering the second season of a three-year, $12.5 million deal, Paddack will be vying for a spot in Minnesota's Opening Day rotation this spring.

Paddack was scheduled to throw a bullpen session later this week before heading to Triple-A St. Paul, where he's expected to make his next rehab appearance in a relief role. Paddack is nearly 16 months removed from Tommy John surgery and presumably will require at least a couple more rehab appearances before being activated from the 60-day injured list. The Twins could use him as a multi-inning reliever late in the season.

He's been facing live hitters since the start of August and is set to throw a three-inning sim game at the team's complex in Florida this week. There's been no indication on how long Paddack's assignment could last, but there's a chance the 27-year-old righty is able to rejoin the Minnesota bullpen in a multi-inning relief role in time for the team's playoff push.

If both Meister and Paparesta are satisfied with how Paddack has come along in his recovery from surgery, the 27-year-old could be cleared for what would likely be an extended minor-league rehab assignment in September.

Because it was the second Tommy John surgery of his career, Paddack may face an uphill battle to return anywhere close to the level of success he enjoyed as a rookie with the Padres in 2019. Given that they signed Paddack to a three-year, $12.53 million contract extension in January, the Twins must at least be encouraged by how he's responded thus far from surgery.
