• White Sox's Michael Soroka: Struggles in defeat

  Soroka (0-2) took the loss Sunday against the Reds, allowing five runs on five hits and six walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out four. Four of Soroka's five runs allowed came in an interesting third inning that saw him allow two runs on a home run by Christian Encarnacion-Strand to open the scoring, followed by two more runs scoring later in the inning on an infield single by Jeimer Candelario. The six walks allowed were a career high for Soroka, who now sports a 6.98 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and has 10 strikeouts against 12 walks over 19.1 innings. His next scheduled turn in the rotation is tentatively set for next weekend in a tough matchup against the Phillies in the City of Brotherly Love.

  Soroka didn't factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out four. Soroka was staked to a 5-0 lead before taking the mound in the first, but he couldn't make it stand -- the right-hander gave up a two-run homer to Josh Naylor in the bottom half of the frame before the Guardians tacked on two more runs between the third and fourth innings, forcing Soroka out of the game before he could qualify for a decision. It's been a rocky start to the year for Soroka -- he's 0-1 with a 6.14 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 6:6 K:BB across his first three starts (14.2 innings). He's currently in line to face the Reds at home Sunday in his next outing.

It was an encouraging effort from Soroka after the right-hander allowed four runs over five innings in his first outing this season. Soroka struggled to a 6.40 ERA in seven starts last year with Atlanta after missing the previous two campaigns with a myriad of injuries. While Soroka should be locked into a starting role in Chicago, he's unlikely to offer much in terms of fantasy production. Soroka's currently lined up for a road matchup with the Guardians early next week.

• White Sox's Michael Soroka: Fails to impress in ChiSox debut

  Soroka didn't factor into the decision Saturday against the Tigers, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings. He failed to strike out a batter. The right-hander threw 77 pitches (44 strikes) before exiting the mound with a 6-4 lead, but Soroka was far from dominant and generated only three swinging strikes. The White Sox eventually lost the game 7-6 in 10 innings. The fact that Soroka was able to give Chicago a solid turn through the rotation is something of a minor miracle in itself, considering the litany of injuries that derailed his career following his breakout 2019 season with Atlanta, and even in that campaign he posted only a 20.3 percent strikeout rate to support his 2.68 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. Soroka has a long way to go to prove he can regain that form, however.

  Soroka will start the White Sox's second game of the season against the Tigers, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Entering spring training, it was unclear if Soroka would win a rotation spot. However, with Dylan Cease traded away and Brad Keller set to start the year in the minors, Soroka will pitch toward the top of the rotation to begin the regular season. He's battled a number of significant injuries across the last several years, though he did manage to log 32.1 innings in the majors in 2023. Still only 26, Soroka has also had an impressive spring, allowing only two earned runs across 13 innings while maintaining a 17:5 K:BB.

Soroka finished the 2023 season on the 60-day injured list with right forearm inflammation and missed all of 2021-22 due to consecutive Achilles tears, but he should be able to enjoy a normal offseason and will likely be in the running for an Opening Day rotation spot with the White Sox in 2024. Chicago acquired the 26-year-old right-hander from Atlanta last week as part of a six-player trade.

  White Sox general manager Chris Getz said Friday that he expects one or both of Soroka (forearm) and Jared Shuster to open 2024 in the rotation, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. Both players were acquired from Atlanta on Thursday in a deal which sent reliever Aaron Bummer the other way. The White Sox' rotation looks like one of the easiest to crack right now and the path would be further cleared if Dylan Cease is traded. Getz did note that he plans to acquire additional pitching help this winter, but Soroka has an early leg up for a spot as he tries to reestablish himself in his new surroundings. The right-hander ended the 2023 season on the injured list with forearm inflammation, but he could be ready for the start of spring training.

  Soroka (forearm) won't require surgery after testing revealed only inflammation in his forearm, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. The right-hander's season is over after he left his start Tuesday complaining of numbness in his fingertips, but Soroka will at least be able to avoid yet another surgical procedure. His numbers in the majors this year were unimpressive, but given that he hadn't pitched for Atlanta since 2020 due to multiple injuries, just making it back to the big leagues was an achievement. Soroka also pitched well at Triple-A in 2023, getting named the International League Pitcher of the Month for August after posting a 2.77 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 34:8 K:BB through 26 innings. He'll head into next spring looking to reclaim a regular spot in Atlanta's rotation.

  Soroka got pulled from his start with Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday after 73 pitches and 4.2 innings as Atlanta keeps a close eye on his innings total this season, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. The right-hander was pitching well Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out nine without walking a batter, but the organization is focused on the bigger picture. Soroka has tossed 77.2 innings at Triple-A in 2023 plus another 29.1 in the majors, a fairly sizable workload for the 26-year-old considering he managed only 38.2 innings total over the prior three years while recovering from three surgeries on his Achilles tendon. He appears to be rounding into form -- he's got a 1.62 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 25:5 K:BB in August for Gwinnett -- but Atlanta may prefer to have him finish out the year healthy and looking ahead to 2024 rather than bring him back up to the big-league roster for the stretch run.

The early exit of Kolby Allard (shoulder) forced Soroka into action Sunday for 30 pitches (25 strikes) -- the right-hander is currently scheduled to get the start Friday, but the team could shuffle around its rotation and bump him into Allard's spot Saturday if the southpaw is forced to miss his turn, or even just to give Soroka an extra day's rest.

  Soroka didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 8-1 win over the Guardians, allowing five hits and three walks over 4.2 scoreless innings. He struck out four. The right-hander also hit two batters with pitches and tossed a wild pitch as he managed to get only 57 of his 99 offerings over the plate before exiting. While the scoreless outing was encouraging, Soroka put runners in scoring position during every inning he worked, and it was as much good luck as good pitching that saw him escape unscathed. Atlanta's rotation plans after the All-Star break aren't yet clear, but it seems likely Soroka will get at least one more chance in the majors to continue his long recovery from multiple Achilles injuries.
