Player Outlook
Mike Soroka broke out with Atlanta in 2019 when he was an All-Star and the runner-up for NL Rookie of the Year, but injuries have wiped out the better part of the last four seasons. He tore his right Achilles in August of 2020 and suffered a complete re-tear of the same tendon less than a year later. While the right-hander was expected to be a full go last spring, he went down early with a hamstring injury and ended the season on the injured list with forearm inflammation, making only seven appearances (six starts) for the major-league club in between and struggling to a 6.40 ERA. His numbers at Triple-A Gwinnett were highly respectable (3.41 ERA, 1.07 WHIP), but regardless Atlanta decided to move on in the offseason, trading Soroka to the White Sox in the Aaron Bummer deal. Still just 26 years old, Soroka will attempt to stay healthy and revitalize his career, perhaps as a member of the starting rotation.

  • White Sox's Michael Soroka: Struggles in defeat

Soroka (0-2) took the loss Sunday against the Reds, allowing five runs on five hits and six walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out four. Four of Soroka's five runs allowed came in an interesting third inning that saw him allow two runs on a home run by Christian Encarnacion-Strand to open the scoring, followed by two more runs scoring later in the inning on an infield single by Jeimer Candelario. The six walks allowed were a career high for Soroka, who now sports a 6.98 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and has 10 strikeouts against 12 walks over 19.1 innings. His next scheduled turn in the rotation is tentatively set for next weekend in a tough matchup against the Phillies in the City of Brotherly Love.

  • White Sox's Michael Soroka: Can't make it out of the fourth

Soroka didn't factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out four. Soroka was staked to a 5-0 lead before taking the mound in the first, but he couldn't make it stand -- the right-hander gave up a two-run homer to Josh Naylor in the bottom half of the frame before the Guardians tacked on two more runs between the third and fourth innings, forcing Soroka out of the game before he could qualify for a decision. It's been a rocky start to the year for Soroka -- he's 0-1 with a 6.14 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 6:6 K:BB across his first three starts (14.2 innings). He's currently in line to face the Reds at home Sunday in his next outing.

  • White Sox's Michael Soroka: Better in second start

Soroka (0-1) took the loss Thursday against the Royals, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out two over six innings. It was an encouraging effort from Soroka after the right-hander allowed four runs over five innings in his first outing this season. Soroka struggled to a 6.40 ERA in seven starts last year with Atlanta after missing the previous two campaigns with a myriad of injuries. While Soroka should be locked into a starting role in Chicago, he's unlikely to offer much in terms of fantasy production. Soroka's currently lined up for a road matchup with the Guardians early next week.

  • White Sox's Michael Soroka: Fails to impress in ChiSox debut

Soroka didn't factor into the decision Saturday against the Tigers, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings. He failed to strike out a batter. The right-hander threw 77 pitches (44 strikes) before exiting the mound with a 6-4 lead, but Soroka was far from dominant and generated only three swinging strikes. The White Sox eventually lost the game 7-6 in 10 innings. The fact that Soroka was able to give Chicago a solid turn through the rotation is something of a minor miracle in itself, considering the litany of injuries that derailed his career following his breakout 2019 season with Atlanta, and even in that campaign he posted only a 20.3 percent strikeout rate to support his 2.68 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. Soroka has a long way to go to prove he can regain that form, however.

  • White Sox's Michael Soroka: Locked into rotation

Soroka will start the White Sox's second game of the season against the Tigers, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Entering spring training, it was unclear if Soroka would win a rotation spot. However, with Dylan Cease traded away and Brad Keller set to start the year in the minors, Soroka will pitch toward the top of the rotation to begin the regular season. He's battled a number of significant injuries across the last several years, though he did manage to log 32.1 innings in the majors in 2023. Still only 26, Soroka has also had an impressive spring, allowing only two earned runs across 13 innings while maintaining a 17:5 K:BB.

  • White Sox's Michael Soroka: Set to start Monday

Soroka (forearm) is scheduled to start Monday's spring game against the Diamondbacks. The right-hander has been throwing bullpen sessions early in camp and will now make his spring debut for the White Sox. Soroka was able to stay fairly healthy last season after being limited by injuries the previous few years, though he struggled when up in the majors for Atlanta with a 6.40 ERA over 32.1 innings.

  • White Sox's Michael Soroka: In the mix for rotation

Soroka (forearm) is penciled into a rotation spot, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Soroka ended the 2023 season on the injured list but threw about 40 pitches in a bullpen session Friday without issue. Problems staying on the mound are nothing new for Soroka, as he has managed only 46 big-league innings across the last four seasons. If he manages to stay healthy for the rest of spring training, he'll get a chance to take a consistent turn in a big-league rotation for the first time since 2019.

  • White Sox's Michael Soroka: Avoids arbitration

Soroka (forearm) agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal with the White Sox on Thursday, avoiding arbitration, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Soroka was traded from Atlanta to Chicago this offseason, which is a downgrade in overall team context but gives him a much better chance of being a regular member of a big-league rotation. Soroka dealt with forearm inflammation at the end of last season but it was reported in November that he had resumed throwing and felt great.

  • White Sox's Michael Soroka: Has resumed throwing

Soroka (forearm) said Monday that he has resumed throwing and "feels great," LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. Soroka finished the 2023 season on the 60-day injured list with right forearm inflammation and missed all of 2021-22 due to consecutive Achilles tears, but he should be able to enjoy a normal offseason and will likely be in the running for an Opening Day rotation spot with the White Sox in 2024. Chicago acquired the 26-year-old right-hander from Atlanta last week as part of a six-player trade.

  • White Sox's Michael Soroka: Path to rotation spot

White Sox general manager Chris Getz said Friday that he expects one or both of Soroka (forearm) and Jared Shuster to open 2024 in the rotation, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. Both players were acquired from Atlanta on Thursday in a deal which sent reliever Aaron Bummer the other way. The White Sox' rotation looks like one of the easiest to crack right now and the path would be further cleared if Dylan Cease is traded. Getz did note that he plans to acquire additional pitching help this winter, but Soroka has an early leg up for a spot as he tries to reestablish himself in his new surroundings. The right-hander ended the 2023 season on the injured list with forearm inflammation, but he could be ready for the start of spring training.

  • White Sox's Michael Soroka: Traded to White Sox

Soroka (forearm) was traded from Atlanta to the White Sox on Thursday along with Jared Shuster, Braden Shewmake, Nicky Lopez and Riley Gowens in exchange for Aaron Bummer. Soroka was placed on the injured list Sept. 6 with a forearm injury, though surgery was not required. That came after multiple Achilles injuries, which combined to limit him to only 37.2 total innings from 2020 to 2022 before being mostly healthy last season prior to the forearm issue. Soroka could push for a back-end rotation spot with the White Sox out of spring training.

  • Braves' Michael Soroka: Moved to 60-day IL

Atlanta transferred Soroka (forearm) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Monday. The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Jackson Stephens, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Gwinnett ahead of Monday's doubleheader with the Phillies. Soroka had already been ruled out for the season with right forearm inflammation. Before being shut down, Soroka made seven appearances (six starts) for the big club this season, going 2-2 with a 6.40 ERA and 1.48 WHIP over 32.1 innings.

  • Braves' Michael Soroka: Won't need surgery

Soroka (forearm) won't require surgery after testing revealed only inflammation in his forearm, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. The right-hander's season is over after he left his start Tuesday complaining of numbness in his fingertips, but Soroka will at least be able to avoid yet another surgical procedure. His numbers in the majors this year were unimpressive, but given that he hadn't pitched for Atlanta since 2020 due to multiple injuries, just making it back to the big leagues was an achievement. Soroka also pitched well at Triple-A in 2023, getting named the International League Pitcher of the Month for August after posting a 2.77 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 34:8 K:BB through 26 innings. He'll head into next spring looking to reclaim a regular spot in Atlanta's rotation.

  • Braves' Michael Soroka: Won't return in 2023

Soroka (forearm) will be shut down for the remainder of the season, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Tests didn't reveal any structural damage in Soroka's forearm, but with less than a month left in the season, Atlanta will put him on the shelf and focus on getting him ready for the start of spring training. In his first major-league season since 2020, Soroka posted a 6.40 ERA and 1.48 WHIP over 32.1 innings.

  • Braves' Michael Soroka: Lands on IL with forearm injury

Soroka was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with right forearm inflammation. Soroka dealt with numbness in the fingers on his pitching hand during a loss to the Cardinals on Tuesday, but it's now being termed a forearm issue which is sending the righty to the IL. There is no timetable for his return at this point, but given where we are on the calendar it seems unlikely we'll see Soroka pitch again in the big leagues this season.

  • Braves' Michael Soroka: Workload an issue

Soroka got pulled from his start with Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday after 73 pitches and 4.2 innings as Atlanta keeps a close eye on his innings total this season, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. The right-hander was pitching well Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out nine without walking a batter, but the organization is focused on the bigger picture. Soroka has tossed 77.2 innings at Triple-A in 2023 plus another 29.1 in the majors, a fairly sizable workload for the 26-year-old considering he managed only 38.2 innings total over the prior three years while recovering from three surgeries on his Achilles tendon. He appears to be rounding into form -- he's got a 1.62 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 25:5 K:BB in August for Gwinnett -- but Atlanta may prefer to have him finish out the year healthy and looking ahead to 2024 rather than bring him back up to the big-league roster for the stretch run.

  • Braves' Michael Soroka: Sent down Sunday

Soroka was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday. Soroka had inconsistent results after rejoining Atlanta in late June, as he posted a 4.12 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 19.2 innings over four appearances (three starts). He gave up four runs in six innings during Friday's game in Milwaukee but will head back to the minors after Atlanta claimed Yonny Chirinos off waivers Sunday.

  • Braves' Michael Soroka: Wins despite shaky outing

Soroka (2-1) yielded four runs on six hits and two walks over six innings Friday, striking out four and earning a win over Milwaukee. Soroka was tagged with two runs in the first inning but kept the Brewers off the board after that until Willy Adames' two-run shot in the sixth. Soroka completed six innings for the third time in six MLB appearances this season, but the 25-year-old has allowed seven homers through 29.1 innings. He now owns a 5.52 ERA and 23:11 K:BB. Soroka is currently lined up to face the Brewers at home next week.

  • Braves' Michael Soroka: Needed in relief Sunday

Soroka gave up two runs on three hits over three innings of relief in Sunday's loss to the White Sox. He struck out three without walking a batter. Luis Robert took Soroka deep in the sixth inning to account for all the damage off him, but Atlanta was already facing a 6-1 deficit at that point. The early exit of Kolby Allard (shoulder) forced Soroka into action Sunday for 30 pitches (25 strikes) -- the right-hander is currently scheduled to get the start Friday, but the team could shuffle around its rotation and bump him into Allard's spot Saturday if the southpaw is forced to miss his turn, or even just to give Soroka an extra day's rest.

  • Braves' Michael Soroka: Inefficient in no-decision

Soroka didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 8-1 win over the Guardians, allowing five hits and three walks over 4.2 scoreless innings. He struck out four. The right-hander also hit two batters with pitches and tossed a wild pitch as he managed to get only 57 of his 99 offerings over the plate before exiting. While the scoreless outing was encouraging, Soroka put runners in scoring position during every inning he worked, and it was as much good luck as good pitching that saw him escape unscathed. Atlanta's rotation plans after the All-Star break aren't yet clear, but it seems likely Soroka will get at least one more chance in the majors to continue his long recovery from multiple Achilles injuries.
