• Guardians' Ben Lively: Roughed up in loss

  Lively (0-1) took the loss against the Padres on Wednesday, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four batters in 4.1 frames. Lively got off to a decent start Wednesday, striking out four of the first nine batters he faced. However, things took a turn for the worse in the third inning after four consecutive hits -- capped off by a Jackson Merrill homer -- gave San Diego a 4-0 lead that it would never relinquish. Lively is now up to a 6.75 ERA through his first two starts of the year but should have a decent chance to bounce back in his next outing, which is tentatively scheduled to come next week against the White Sox.

  Lively did not factor into the decision in Thursday's 7-4 win over Kansas City, allowing three runs on four hits over five innings. He struck out three. Lively was announced as Cleveland's Opening Day starter Thursday morning after Tanner Bibee (illness) was a late scratch. The 33-year-old Lively filled in admirably, with all of Kansas City's offense coming on Vinnie Pasquantino's three-run homer in the third. Lively figures to hold down a spot at the backend of Cleveland's rotation after going 13-10 with a 3.81 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 118 strikeouts in 151 innings last year.

Lively made his first Cactus League start and allowed much base traffic but managed to stifle the damage to just one run. He threw 23 strikes among his 33 offerings, which was his goal coming in. "All good, just trying to locate everything, not letting it rip all the way," the pitcher told Steve Stockmar of MLB.com. "Felt good to be out there." Lively is coming off his best season in the majors, posting a 3.81 ERA over a career-high 151 regular-season innings. The accumulation of innings was the prominent reason he was left off the ALDS roster last year and limited to the one relief appearance in the ALCS. The right-hander's goal is to prove he has the stamina to be included in any postseason series.

  Lively (13-9) picked up the win Friday, allowing one run on three hits and a walk over five innings in a 5-1 victory over the Cardinals. He struck out two. The right-hander looked like he was running out of gas in late August as he set a new career high in innings pitched, but Lively has found a second wind. Over his last three starts, he's given up just one run in 12 innings, and he's won back-to-back outings. On the season, Lively's posted a 3.80 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 114:45 K:BB through 147 innings. With the Guardians on the cusp of clinching the AL Central title, the team could shuffle its rotation ahead of the playoffs, but Lively currently lines up to make his final start of the regular season at home next weekend against the Astros.

It was the shortest outing of the season for Lively, who had made it into the fifth inning during each of his previous 20 starts. Despite the rough showing, the veteran righty is continuing to produce a career season, posting a 3.71 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 93 strikeouts over 114 innings. His next opportunity to toe the rubber is scheduled to take place in Milwaukee when the Guardians travel to take on the Brewers.

Lively struggled with command and control a bit Wednesday, issuing a season-high four walks. The Diamondbacks would ultimately make him pay with a pair of two-run homers in an eventual 7-3 Cleveland defeat. It's the first time in five starts that Lively's allowed more than two runs -- he'd posted a 2.78 ERA in his last four outings (22.2 innings) prior to Wednesday. Overall, the 32-year-old right-hander still sports a 3.59 ERA on the campaign with a 1.17 WHIP and 92:34 K:BB across 110.1 innings. Lively will look to rebound in his next outing, currently slated for early next week at home against the Cubs.
