Betts has failed to get on base only twice in 23 games to begin the season, and he boasts a .356/.473/.644 slash line with six homers, five steals, 18 RBI and an MLB-leading 23 runs.

Betts produced the majors' first five-hit game of the season Tuesday and matched his previous career high for hits in a game, raising his batting average to an MLB-best .388 in the process. Though the Dodgers' 12-8 start to the season is somewhat disappointing given the immense talent on the roster, Betts and Shohei Ohtani (1.019 OPS) are doing their part in the top two spots in the lineup. Betts has still been able to rack up 22 runs and 18 RBI through 20 games, even while No. 3 hitter Freddie Freeman (.788 OPS) has yet to really get going at the plate.

  Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Friday that Betts will be the team's shortstop moving forward, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. Roberts referred to the move as "permanent, for now." Betts and Gavin Lux are flip-flopping infield positions due to the latter's defensive issues at shortstop. Betts did start 12 games at shortstop last season, so the position isn't totally foreign to him, but he's been an outfielder for the overwhelming majority of his career so asking him to become a full-time shortstop at 31 years old is ambitious. For fantasy purposes, Betts will pick up a third position of eligibility early on this season.

  Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced Feb. 3 at the team's Fan Fest event that Betts will remain the team's leadoff hitter in 2024, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports. Roberts' announcement doesn't come as a major surprise after Betts hit leadoff in all 151 of his starts in 2023 on his way to finishing second in the National League MVP balloting while slashing .307/.408/.579 with 39 home runs, 107 RBI, 126 runs and 14 stolen bases. His run total was good for fourth in baseball last season, and if health prevails, Betts could have a chance at besting his previous career high of 135 runs during the 2024 campaign. He'll be batting in front of Freddie Freeman and free-agent pickup Shohei Ohtani (elbow), whom Roberts confirmed would hit second and third, respectively. Freeman had already hit regularly out of the two hole in 2023, while Ohtani should represent an upgrade in the No. 3 spot over catcher Will Smith, who made 88 starts out of that lineup spot last season. In addition to the arrival of Ohtani, Betts' fantasy appeal should also get a boost by virtue of having eligibility at both outfield and second base, something he didn't have in most fantasy leagues to begin the 2023 season. Roberts previously said earlier in the offseason that Betts will be a full-time second baseman in 2024 after moving between both the infield and outfield last season.

  Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Monday in an interview on MLB Network that Betts will be the team's everyday second baseman in 2024. The Dodgers had confirmed previously that Betts was going to play extensively at the keystone again during the upcoming season, but Roberts' statement Monday was more definitive in that second base will be the 31-year-old's regular spot in the field. Betts made 107 appearances in right field and 70 appearances at second base in 2023, in addition to 16 appearances at shortstop. Though Roberts indicated that Betts will still see the occasional start in right field versus left-handed pitching, he looks like he'll mostly be on the dirt moving forward. Jason Heyward is slated to draw most of the starts in right field when the Dodgers face righties.
