  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Gets no help in loss

DeGrom (0-1) allowed one run on three hits and a walk while striking out seven over seven innings, taking the loss versus the Dodgers on Friday. This is the definition of a hard-luck loss -- deGrom gave up a solo home run to Tommy Edman on the second pitch of the game, and that was the difference. DeGrom threw 61 of 96 pitches for strikes in this strong start, so his workload limitations look to be just about gone after his fourth outing. This was deGrom's first quality start of the season, and it was a strong bounce-back effort after he allowed three runs, including two home runs, on three hits and four walks over four innings against the Mariners last Friday. For the season, the right-hander has a 3.32 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 20:7 K:BB across 21.2 innings, though he's also given up five homers.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Shaky again in no-decision

DeGrom didn't factor into the decision Friday against the Mariners, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks in four innings. He struck out four. The star right-hander wasn't at his best Friday, giving up two solo home runs and failing to throw a clean inning. Through three starts (14.2 innings), deGrom has a 4.30 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 13:6 K:BB. The Rangers are being cautious with the oft-injured deGrom's workload to begin the season, and he'll be looking to reach the 90-pitch threshold for the first time this year in a home matchup against the Angels in the middle of next week.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Serves up two homers

DeGrom allowed four earned runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out three across 5.2 innings Saturday against the Rays. He did not factor into the decision. DeGrom was staked to a four-run lead and held the Rays in check through five innings. However, he gave up a two-run home run in the sixth inning and was pulled in the same frame after allowing a two-out double with the runner ultimately coming around to score. While the line was a bit inflated, deGrom uncharacteristically struggled to get strikeouts and was forced to work around plenty of baserunners.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Tosses five shutout innings

DeGrom allowed two hits and two walks over five scoreless frames in a no-decision against Boston on Sunday. He struck out six batters in the Rangers' win. DeGrom looked sharp in his season debut; he generated 16 whiffs, including 10 with his slider, and coughed up just one extra-base hit. His fastball averaged 96.7 mph and touched 98.1 mph. DeGrom went into the start with a limit of around 75 pitches or five innings, which he nearly matched with his 73 pitches (49 strikes) across five frames. The veteran righty should progressively see his workload expand, starting with his next projected outing this weekend at home against the Rays.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: On pitch limit in debut

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said that he expects deGrom to be limited to around 75 pitches or five innings in Sunday's game against the Red Sox, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. In an effort to help deGrom stay healthy after he was limited to just nine starts over the last two seasons while recovering from his second Tommy John surgery, the Rangers brought him along slowly during spring training. He made just three spring appearances and built up to four innings and 70 pitches in his final outing, so deGrom will see only a slight increase in his projected workload in his season debut. While the potential five-inning limit caps deGrom's upside as a DFS option for Sunday, fantasy managers in redraft leagues will likely still want to keep the right-hander in their lineups.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Makes second spring start

DeGrom allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three over four innings in Wednesday's Cactus League start against the Mariners. DeGrom made his second Cactus League start but has also built up in minor-league games during the spring. He told Kenndi Landry of MLB.com that he feels good health-wise but was not pleased about his mechanics. Specifically, his shoulder was flying open, and deGrom couldn't keep the ball down with his slider and caught too much of the middle of the plate overall. The Rangers' ace worked his pitch count to 57, which is less than optimal at this stage of the Cactus League, but deGrom is expected to pitch when his turn comes up in the opening week of the regular season.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Throws three innings in minors game

DeGrom (illness) threw three innings in a minor-league game Friday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. DeGrom had to be scratched from a scheduled appearance Thursday due to a stomach virus, but it wound up setting him back only one day and shouldn't affect his readiness for the start of the season. The Rangers plan to start deGrom at the back end of their rotation once the regular season begins as part of a plan to monitor his workload.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Battling stomach virus

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said that DeGrom won't pitch Thursday as initially planned while the right-hander recovers from a stomach virus, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. DeGrom had been penciled in to start Thursday's Cactus League game against the Giants or in a minor-league contest on the back fields of camp, but he won't be available in any capacity after he apparently fell ill overnight. Assuming he's able to quickly bounce back from the ailment over the next couple of days, deGrom should still be on track to open the season in the Texas rotation, but he can't afford to miss many more throwing sessions at this stage of camp. The Rangers had already been easing deGrom in during spring training, and he built up to 31 pitches in his first Cactus League start Saturday. DeGrom will likely need to push his pitch count into the 60-to-70 range by the end of the spring to head into his first start of the regular season without any major workload restrictions.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Scaling back velocity in 2025

DeGrom plans to dial back the velocity on his pitches this season in an effort to stay healthy, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. DeGrom's average fastball velocity was 96 miles per hour during his best season in 2018, but it climbed each of the three years after that, peaking at 99.2 mph in 2021. Persistent arm trouble accompanied the added velocity, and deGrom hopes pumping the brakes a bit can help keep him on the mound. He averaged 97.3 mph during his three starts last season with the Rangers and sat at 97 mph in his first spring training outing. While the Rangers don't have a strict innings limit with deGrom in 2025, they will manage his workload, which will include starting him at the back end of the rotation when the season begins.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Fires two perfect innings

DeGrom threw two scoreless innings against the Royals in Saturday's Cactus League game, striking out three batters. Making his first appearance of the spring, deGrom threw 31 pitches and didn't allow a baserunner. He struck out both Kyle Isbel and Bobby Witt to open the contest and finished his day off with a strikeout of Tyler Gentry. DeGrom's fastball touched 98 mph, and his slider and curveball looked sharp. The Rangers are going to slowly ramp things up with deGrom, and he's scheduled to again take the mound Thursday against the Giants. He's likely looking at 40-45 pitches in his next start, per Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Starting at back end of rotation

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Monday that deGrom will begin the season at "the back end" of the rotation, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. He's expected to make his first regular season start either March 30 versus the Cubs or March 31 against the Reds. DeGrom is considered healthy, but the Rangers are simply allowing the two-time Cy Young Award winner ample time to build up after he missed most of the last two seasons while recovering from his second Tommy John surgery. The 36-year-old will make his Cactus League debut Friday against the Rockies and will be built up to five innings by his final spring outing.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Throws live BP

DeGrom threw live batting practice Saturday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. "He looked good," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He looked like Jacob; the stuff, everything. He felt good. I think he came out of it fine." DeGrom threw 25 pitches (14 strikes) in his first live BP session of spring. One person on hand estimated he was throwing at about 80-to-90 percent. The 36-year-old deGrom is looking for his first full healthy season since 2020; he's made just 35 starts over the last four seasons. Despite what has been a deliberate pace in deGrom's ramp-up, Bochy expects the pitcher to be ready when the regular season begins. He'll make his first spring start this coming Friday.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Making Cactus League debut Friday

DeGrom will make his first Cactus League start next Friday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. DeGrom is set to throw his first round of live batting practice Saturday in preparation for his first spring start, after spending the past few weeks throwing bullpen sessions. The veteran right-hander will have slightly less than three weeks after his first spring appearance to ramp up for Opening Day. Given he missed most of the last two seasons, it seems likely he begins the season under some workload restrictions.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: On track for mid-March spring debut

DeGrom will throw the first of what will likely be a few live batting practice sessions this weekend before he'll be ready to appear in a Cactus League game, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. That schedule likely lines deGrom up to make his Cactus League debut in the second week of March. It's a quick turnaround between then and Opening Day, but the Rangers are understandably being careful with deGrom this spring after he missed most of the last two seasons following Tommy John surgery in June 2023, the second of his career. The two-time Cy Young winner might have a relatively limited workload early on this season.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Throws first session at camp

DeGrom threw a bullpen session Saturday, his first since the start of training camp, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. DeGrom entered camp healthy after dealing with a second Tommy John elbow surgery that wiped out much of 2023 and 2024. The right-hander made three starts last September and recorded a 1.69 ERA over 10.2 innings. A healthy deGrom is key for the Rangers, who have won seven of the pitcher's nine starts over the last two seasons.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Five strikeouts in final turn

DeGrom came away with a no-decision in Friday's 5-2 win over the Angels, allowing one run on four hits over four innings. He struck out five without walking a batter. The 36-year-old right-hander was sharp in his final start of 2024, topping out at 98.7 mph with his fastball and firing 39 of 53 pitches for strikes. A cautious recovery from Tommy John surgery cost deGrom most of the season, but in three September outings he delivered a 1.69 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 14:1 K:BB over 10.2 innings, suggesting he still has plenty left in the tank. He still has three years and $115 million left on his contract, plus a $20 million club option for 2028, so if he's healthy deGrom should play a big role in the Rangers' rotation plans for next season.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Fans five over three frames

DeGrom did not factor into the decision in Friday's 8-2 loss against Seattle, allowing one run on three hits and one walk over three innings. He struck out five. The two-time Cy Young winner fired 58 pitches as he continues to build up after missing most of the year while recovering from Tommy John surgery. DeGrom looked terrific once again, as he averaged 97.6 mph on his fastball and generated nine whiffs in total. The only blemish on his evening came via a Josh Rojas solo shot in the third inning, the first run deGrom has allowed over 6.2 total innings this season. The Texas right-hander is currently scheduled to make his last start, which should once again have a workload restriction, on the road against the Angels next week.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Delivers scoreless line in return

DeGrom (elbow) allowed four hits and struck out four without walking a batter over 3.2 scoreless innings Friday while taking a no-decision in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Mariners. In his first big-league outing since April 28, 2023 and after completing four minor-league rehab starts prior to being activated from the 60-day injured list, deGrom was limited to 61 pitches (41 strikes) in his return to the Texas rotation. Though he was generally sharp during his time on the mound, deGrom is likely to remain on a workload restriction for his next start, which is expected to come next week at home versus the Blue Jays.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Returning Friday

DeGrom (elbow) will start Friday's game against the Mariners, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. DeGrom has been on the injured list all season while working his way back from a Tommy John procedure he underwent last June. Now that he's made four rehab appearances in the minors, during which he allowed just one earned run across 10.2 innings while striking out 15 batters, he's been given the green light to make his season debut and help out the Rangers' rotation for the final several weeks of the season. Although the four-time All-Star hasn't pitched since April 2023, his minor-league performance and favorable matchup against a weak Mariners offense suggest that he'll pick up right where he left off during his first start back in the majors.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Looks ready to return from IL

DeGrom (elbow) allowed one hit and struck out five over four scoreless innings in a rehab start for Double-A Frisco on Saturday. DeGrom made his fourth rehab start, and the four innings were the most he's thrown. The right-hander, who was scheduled to throw 60 pitches, was too efficient, dispatching the opposition on just 49 throws. The Rangers plan to have deGrom return from the 60-day injured list to make his season debut in the majors at some point during Texas' road trip to Arizona and Seattle that begins Tuesday and runs through next Sunday.
