Player Outlook
Aside from a career-worst 13.0% walk rate, Josh Hader was back to his otherwise dominant ways, tallying 33 of the Padres' 36 total saves for a 91.7% team save share that was second-highest among closers. His 36.8% strikeout rate was fifth-best among qualified relievers thanks to a devastating slider (51.7% whiff rate, .100 BAA) and upper-90's sinker (73.4% pitch usage) that kept hitters off-balance. The southpaw went three months last summer without permitting an earned run, spanning 26 appearances and 23.2 innings. The five-time All-Star is showing no signs of slowing down as he enters his age-30 season. Hader ended up with the Astros in free agency on a five-year, $95 million deal, which presumably moves Ryan Pressly into a setup role. The lefty should remain among the top-five closers off the board in drafts.

  • Astros' Josh Hader: Officially named Houston closer

Astros manager Joe Espada said Wednesday that Hader will be the team's closer this season, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. There didn't seem to be much doubt after Hader signed a five-year, $95 million contract last month, but Espada made it official after speaking to both Hader and Ryan Pressly on Tuesday. Pressly could net the occasional save on days when Hader is unavailable, but clearly his fantasy outlook takes a major hit. Hader collected a 1.28 ERA and 85:30 K:BB over 56.1 innings while recording 33 saves for the Padres in 2023.

  • Astros' Josh Hader: Signs with Astros

Hader signed a five-year, $95 million contract with the Astros on Friday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Coming off a phenomenal season in which Hader logged a 1.28 ERA and 1.10 WHIP through 56.1 innings while racking up 33 saves, the 29-year-old southpaw will join the Astros on the most lucrative deal for a reliever in MLB history, based on present-day value. This will be Hader's second stint with the Astros organization -- he spent roughly two years in Houston's farm system before being traded to the Brewers in 2015. He will almost certainly take over as the Astros' primary closer, moving Ryan Pressly into a setup role.

  • Josh Hader: Pursued by Astros

The Astros are making a big effort to sign Hader, Ken Rosenthal and Chandler Rome of The Athletic are reporting. If the Astros were to sign Hader, it would create quite a ripple in the closer pool, as Hader is unlikely to share the save duties with Ryan Pressly. The Astros just got the news that Kendall Graveman is out for the season, so they need more premium depth in their bullpen.

  • Padres' Josh Hader: Earns 33rd save

Hader picked up the save in Friday's 3-2 victory over the White Sox. He allowed one run on one hit and one walk over one inning without recording a strikeout. It was far from a clean outing for Hader, who allowed a solo homer to Carlos Perez to lead off the inning, then gave up a walk and hit a batter prior to inducing Yoan Moncada to ground into a game-ending double play. Friday's appearance marks only the sixth time in 60 appearances that Hader has allowed an earned run this season, leading to a 1.30 ERA, 1.12 ERA and 84 strikeouts over 55.1 innings.

  • Padres' Josh Hader: Converts one-out save

Hader struck out the only batter he faced to earn the save in Tuesday's 4-0 win over the Giants. Seth Lugo ran out of gas in the ninth inning, exiting with 123 pitches. Hader entered with two on and two out and struck out Wilmer Flores to end the game. Hader has pitched 4.2 scoreless innings over his last six appearances while adding four saves and a win in that span. He's at 32 saves in 37 chances this season while posting an excellent 1.18 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 82:28 K:BB through 53.1 innings.

  • Padres' Josh Hader: Nails down 31st save

Hader gave up a hit in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his 31st save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Rockies. The southpaw failed to strike out any batters at all over three appearances and 2.1 innings against Colorado in this series, but he still came away with two saves and a win. Hader still hit 97.6 mph with his final pitch Wednesday as he got Brendan Rodgers to fly out, so those with fantasy shares in the San Diego closer would seem to have little cause for alarm. On the season, Hader carries a 1.21 ERA and 79:28 K:BB through 52 innings.

  • Padres' Josh Hader: Squanders no-hit bid, salvages win

Hader (1-3) earned his first win of the season in Tuesday's 2-0 victory over Colorado. He allowed two hits with no strikeouts over a scoreless inning. Hader inherited a combined no-hitter when entering the game after Blake Snell and Robert Suarez held the Rockies at bay for the first eight frames. While the no-hit bid was scratched after Hader gave up a leadoff single to Brendan Rodgers, the closer managed to keep the Rockies from scoring and eventually nabbed his first win of 2023. Over his last four appearances (3.1 innings), Hader has surrendered one run on seven hits with a 2:2 K:BB.

  • Padres' Josh Hader: Secures 30th save

Hader allowed two hits without giving up a run in one-third of an inning to earn the save in Monday's 11-9 win over the Rockies. The Padres' bullpen nearly blew an eight-run lead, but Hader was eventually able to end the Rockies' comeback hopes despite allowing an inherited runner to score. While far from a pretty effort, Hader was able to secure his 30th save of the season, which was his second in a three-day span after he saw light usage in early September. He's now at a 1.26 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 79:28 K:BB through 50 innings this season.

It marked the lefty's first save since Aug. 28 and only the second time in his last four appearances that he didn't allow a run. His 29 saves on the season currently have him tied with Raisel Iglesias for fifth in the National League.

  • Padres' Josh Hader: Blows save vs. Cardinals

Hader (0-3) blew the save and took the loss in Wednesday's 5-4 loss against the Cardinals. He allowed two runs on two hits while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning. After quickly logging the first two outs in the ninth, Hader gave up a double to Masyn Winn before Tommy Edman belted a two-run homer, handing Hader and the Padres a 5-4 loss. It's the first time Hader's blown a save or allowed an earned run since May 31, a span of 26 appearances (23.2 innings). Hader picked up the save in Tuesday's 8-5 win over the Rockies. He struck out one over two-thirds of a clean inning. Hader was unbothered by the elevation of Coors Field, stepping in and retiring the only two batters he faced for his 26th save of 2023. The southpaw hasn't allowed an earned run since May 31 (20 appearances), a span in which he's converted all 13 save opportunities and owns a 30:12 K:BB.

During that stretch, he's gone 11-for-12 in save chances while striking out 23 over 16 appearances (14.2 innings). The left-hander had a few hiccups last year, but he has returned to form in 2023 and is still one of the elite bullpen arms in MLB.

  • Padres' Josh Hader: Notches 23rd save

Hader struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his 23rd save of the season in a 2-0 win over the Blue Jays. He did hit a batter, but Hader then fanned Alejandro Kirk and George Springer to stifle any chance at a Toronto rally. Hader has converted 10 of 11 save chances since the beginning of June while not allowing an earned run during that stretch, posting a 1.17 WHIP and 22:9 K:BB in his last 13.2 innings.

  • Padres' Josh Hader: Can't nail extra-innings save

Hader blew the save Sunday against the Phillies. He allowed one unearned run on one hit while striking out one over one inning. Hader took the mound in the 10th inning with a 6-5 lead but was unable to keep the Phillies off the board as Bryce Harper knocked in Johan Rojas, who was Philadelphia's automatic runner, with a single. It was Hader's first blown save since May 31 and also marked his first run allowed in his last 13 appearances (11.2 innings). The 29-year-old remains a highly valuable closing option, owning the seventh-most saves in baseball (22) on a 1.03 ERA.

Hader picked up the save Friday against the Phillies. He struck out one over a perfect two-thirds of an inning. Hader struck out Trea Turner and got Nick Castellanos to fly out on a total of 10 pitches to end the game. After a shaky initial run with San Diego down the stretch last season, Hader has returned to dominant form in 2023, securing 22 saves in 25 chances.

  • Padres' Josh Hader: Picks up 19th save

Hader walked two, struck out one and didn't allow a run over two-thirds of an inning to earn the save Tuesday against the Angels. The All-Star closer appeared poised for a night off with the Padres entering the ninth inning with an 8-1 lead, but Jose Castillo surrendered two runs and loaded the bases to present a save opportunity. Hader threw just 12 of 23 pitches for a strike and walked in a pair of inherited runners, but he ultimately came through for his 19th save in 22 chances. The left-hander pitched in a non-save situation Monday after he saw limited work late in June, so manager Bob Melvin may attempt to stay away from his closer in Wednesday's series finale. Nick Martinez is the likeliest bet to step in for a save chance should Hader be unavailable.
