DJ LeMahieu has two more years left on the deal he signed after his amazing first two years with the Yankees, but those years feel like a distant memory to all involved at present time. LeMahieu went from a vital part of the Yankee offense to an afterthought whose skills have rapidly declined these past few seasons. His health has declined as well. LeMahieu has battled a hip problem that caused him to miss significant time last season, and when he was on the field, his numbers were easily the worst of his career. His days of playing in the middle infield are behind him, and he is now a dual-eligible corner man on draft day, but he's likely to be more involved at third base after the signing of Paul Goldschmidt. LeMahieu is likely best suited for a corner-utility role, but there's a chance he receives another look in a regular role at the hot corner. Simply put, the aging curve has hit LeMahieu rather hard these past few seasons, and with him being 36, that direction will very likely continue.

LeMahieu will go through workouts with the team in Detroit and if everything goes well, he'll be cleared to play in rehab games. The veteran infielder is expected to need most, if not all, of his allotted 20 days on a rehab assignment, so LeMahieu probably won't be back from the injured list before the end of April.
