  • Rams' Davis Allen: May land larger role

Allen could be the Rams' No. 1 tight end when the season starts while Tyler Higbee recovers from a torn ACL and MCL, CCameron DaSilva of USA Today reports.

Allen appeared in 15 regular-season games during his rookie season, after he was selected in the fifth round of the 2023 Draft. The Clemson product recorded 10 catches on 11 targets for 95 yards and a touchdown, all coming from Week 12 on, as Allen's role in the offense grew. Higbee does have a chance to be ready by the time the 2024 regular season kicks off, but if his recovery moves slowly, or he suffers any setbacks, Allen may have an opportunity to seize the top tight end role in the Rams offense.

  • Rams' Davis Allen: Flashes in late-season appearances

Allen finished the 2023 regular-season campaign with 10 catches for 95 yards and a touchdown.

At the start of his rookie year, Allen was buried on the depth chart behind starter Tyler Higbee (knee), recently acquired Hunter Long (knee) and returning backup Brycen Hopkins. Injuries to Higbee and Long thrust Allen into a starting role in Week 14, and he responded with four catches for 50 yards and a touchdown. The fifth-round pick out of Clemson saw a slight uptick in playing time the rest of the way and ended his season with a two-catch performance for 28 yards in the Rams' loss to the Lions in the opening round of the playoffs. Hopkins is an unrestricted free agent, and Higbee is feared to have torn his ACL in the postseason loss, which would leave Allen and Long -- who is coming off MCL surgery of his own -- as potentially the only two healthy tight ends for the Rams for the start of 2024 if Higbee isn't ready to return by the season opener.

  • Rams' Davis Allen: Ties season-high with four catches

Allen secured all four targets for 25 yards during Sunday's 21-20 victory against San Francisco.

With Tyler Higbee (shoulder) out, Allen took over once again as the Rams' starting tight end and was a solid safety valve for Carson Wentz. Allen's rookie campaign looked like it would be mostly relegated to bench duty with Higbee, Hunter Long (knee) and Brycen Hopkins starting out ahead of him on the depth chart, but injuries thrust him into an expanded role by Week 14. His 10-95-1 line in 15 games this season may not leap off the charts, but Allen has proven to be a viable option in the passing game if Higbee is unable to take the field in the Rams' playoff opener at Detroit.

  • Rams' Davis Allen: Relegated to backup duty

Allen secured his only target for 14 yards during Sunday's 28-20 victory against the Commanders.

Tyler Higbee's return from a neck injury did lower the rookie tight end's usage on offense, but Higbee didn't completely dominate the snap share at the position like usual -- the veteran was on the field for 47 snaps to Allen's 26. Higbee did outproduce Allen with four catches for 36 yards on five targets, but how the two players are deployed against the Saints in Week 16 will be telling with respect to whether the rookie has earned a more significant role or if Higbee was simply being eased back into action.

  • Rams' Davis Allen: Emerges with first career touchdown

Allen caught four of five targets for 50 yards and a touchdown during Sunday's 37-31 overtime loss to the Ravens.

With Tyler Higbee (neck) inactive for the first time all season, Hunter Long, Brycen Hopkins and Davis Allen were the next men up at tight end. When Long was carted off with a knee injury during the second quarter, Allen stepped in on the same drive and caught the first touchdown of his NFL career, snaring a sidearm pass from Matthew Stafford and rumbling seven yards through multiple defenders for the score. No other Rams' tight end recorded a catch during the game, and if Higbee and Long miss more time with their respective injuries, Allen looks like the most likely candidate to take over as the starting tight end over Hopkins after this breakthrough performance.

  • Rams' Davis Allen: Notches first career reception

Allen played nine of the Rams' 67 snaps on offense in Sunday's 37-14 win over the Cardinals, hauling in his lone target for a six-yard gain.

With the Rams making Brycen Hopkins a healthy inactive for the contest, Allen and Hunter Long shared the No. 2 tight end role behind starter Tyler Higbee. Though Higbee played three-quarters of the snaps on offense on his way to a 5-29-2 receiving line on five targets, Allen still saw enough field time to come away with his first NFL reception. The fifth-round rookie out of Clemson will look to wrest the top backup gig away from Long and Hopkins over the rest of the season, but he's unlikely to make a meaningful imprint on the box score so long as Higbee is available.

  • Rams' Davis Allen: Makes huge first impression

Allen secured all eight of his targets for 53 yards during Saturday's 34-17 preseason loss to the Raiders.

The rookie fifth-round pick just returned to practice this week after suffering a hamstring injury that cost him the entirety of training camp, but he showed no rust in putting on a dominating performance against the Raiders. Allen made multiple contested catches, showcased his abilities as a blocker and functioned as Stetson Bennett's safety valve through much of the contest. Tyler Higbee is the only roster lock of the seven tight ends the Rams currently have on the roster, but Allen's big game may help move the needle towards keeping the Clemson product on the final 53-man roster.
