Morgan was cut from the Cardinals' practice squad Saturday, Howard Balzer of GoPHNX.com reports.

Morgan was brought in Dec. 20 as an emergency option for the Cardinals. With Kyler Murray (knee) done for the year and Colt McCoy nursing a concussion, he was third in line behind David Blough and Trace McSorley at quarterback. However, as the Cardinals enter the final week of their season, and with two healthy quarterbacks on the active roster, the team has decided to cut Morgan loose.

  • Jets' James Morgan: Best pro-level game to date

Morgan completed 13 of 23 passes for 158 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Friday's preseason finale against the Eagles.

Morgan played the second half after Josh Johnson worked the first half, and the former, a 2020 fourth-round pick, put forth a decent showing, though it remains to be seen whether he'll make the Jets' roster. Both of Morgan's touchdown passes went to tight end Kenny Yeboah, including a 49-yard Hail Mary on the game's final play. Josh Adams ran in the ensuing two-point conversion to tie the game at 31-31, creating about as thrilling of an ending as you'll see in a preseason tie.

  • Jets' James Morgan: Likely not ready for backup gig

Morgan completed one of three passes for five yards in Saturday's 23-14 preseason win over the Packers.

Zach Wilson played most of the first half before giving way to Mike White, who exited with a rib injury. Morgan came in after White got hurt but didn't look very sharp. If White's injury lingers into the regular season and the Jets don't bring in anyone else, Morgan and Josh Johnson would compete for the backup role. Johnson seems like the favorite to win the spot in that scenario considering Morgan -- whom the Jets selected in the fourth round of the 2020 draft -- still looks overwhelmed at the NFL level. But Morgan likely will get a chance to change that perception in the preseason finale against the Eagles.
