The Purdue Boilermakers will attempt to end a 20-year streak of futility against the Wisconsin Badgers on Friday night when the Big Ten West rivals meet in an important showdown. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET from Ross-Ade Stadium. Purdue's last win in the series came with a 26-23 upset of Wisconsin in Madison in 2003. The Boilermakers (1-2) hope to avoid losing their first three home games of the 2023 season and seriously jeopardizing their chances at a winning season or a bowl bid. Wisconsin (2-1) hopes to build on an FBS record of 20 consecutive winning seasons.

Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET from Ross-Ade Stadium. The Badgers are 6-point favorites and the over/under for total points scored is 54.5 in the latest Wisconsin vs. Purdue odds via the SportsLine consensus. Why Wisconsin can cover

First-year Wisconsin offensive coordinator Phil Longo has stated that the team's goal is to have a balanced offense that sets a goal of 200 yards in both rushing and passing. This philosophy is a change of pace from a longtime run-heavy approach that came to define the program and often had the Badgers among the top 10 rushing units in the country.

Wisconsin nearly pulled off this feat in Week 1 when it rushed for 314 and passed for 189 in its 38-17 home win over Buffalo. The Badgers met this milestone last week in their 35-14 win over Georgia Southern with 451 yards of total offense that consisted of 244 passing yards and 207 rushing yards. Since 2000, Wisconsin is 24-0 when it reaches 200 yards passing and 200 yards rushing.

Before the season, first-year coach Luke Fickell told the media his decision to hire Longo, a former offensive coordinator at Ole Miss and North Carolina, was based on diversifying the offensive attack while maintaining a power-based approach. Fickell said he attempted to hire Longo while Fickell was head coach at Cincinnati, but Longo declined the offer at the time. See which team to pick here.

Why Purdue can cover

Despite some issues with pass protection and ball security, Purdue still has managed to build a formidable passing attack that ranks No. 38 in the country at 275 yards per game. Quarterback Hudson Card has been sacked five times over the past two games and hurried on numerous other occasions. But when he gets time to throw, he moves the offense efficiently and spreads the ball to a variety of targets.

Purdue has one of the top sets of tight ends in the country, led by redshirt freshman Max Klare. He is second on the team with 15 receptions and third in yardage with 151 for an average of 10.1 yards per reception.

"What he's shown on Saturdays is what we've seen since we've been here," offensive coordinator Graham Harrell told the media this week. "Over the last couple of weeks, he's started to show up." Klare had eight receptions for 64 yards in the win over Virginia Tech, followed by five catches for 65 yards against SyracuseSee which team to pick here.
