1st Quarter Report
Western Kentucky is on the board, but we're still waiting on Sam Houston to respond. Sitting on a score of 7-0, Western Kentucky has looked like the better team, but there's still three more quarters to play.
If Western Kentucky keeps playing like this, they'll bump their record up to 5-5 in no time. On the other hand, Sam Houston will have to make due with a 2-8 record unless they turn things around.
Preview
The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers will be playing in front of their home fans against the Sam Houston Bearkats at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.
Last Saturday, while it was Western Kentucky who put the first points on the board, it was New Mexico State who put up more. Western Kentucky fell 38-29 to New Mexico State. Western Kentucky got off to an early lead (up 14 with 7:27 left in the first quarter), but sadly they weren't able to maintain that momentum.
Despite the defeat, Western Kentucky had strong showings from Austin Reed, who threw for 270 yards and three touchdowns, and Elijah Young, who gained 164 total yards and a touchdown. Young's longest reception was for an incredible 72 yards.
Sam Houston fell on hard times earlier this season, but after back-to-back victories it seems like their luck might finally be changing. They took down Louisiana Tech 42-27 on Saturday.
Keegan Shoemaker was the offensive standout of the contest as he threw for 269 yards and a touchdown, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Kavian Gaither got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
New Mexico State's win bumped their season record to 8-3 while Western Kentucky's loss dropped theirs to 5-5.
Looking ahead, Western Kentucky is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 13 points. This contest might not be the best time to bet them against the spread since they've let bettors down the last four times they've played.
