Stanford vs. San Jose State score: Spartans' late INT fuels go-ahead TD as Cardinal's comeback falls short

San Jose State fended off a furious comeback by Stanford with a go-ahead touchdown in the final two minutes of its regular-season finale, a 34-31 win. Quarterback Walker Eget's 18-yard touchdown to Treyshun Hurry with 1:55 remaining was fueled by the Spartans' game-defining interception -- their third turnover of the game -- on the previous drive by DB Isiah Revis.

Stanford scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to take its first lead since the opening minutes of the game. Ignited by a wild scoop-n-score, the Cardinal eventually took a 31-27 lead before Ashton Daniels' devastating interception to Revis.

The Cardinal finished their season with a 3-9 record for the fourth consecutive year. Stanford finished with fewer than four wins for the fourth consecutive season for the first time in program history.

San Jose State has now won at least seven games in three consecutive seasons for the first time since 1980-82. Star wide receiver Nick Nash finished with eight catches for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Nash came into the day with 96 catches for 1,291 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. Nash leads all FBS players in all three of those categories.

  • San Jose State outgained Stanford 409-363. Eget finished with 348 passing yards, while SJSU ran for only 61 yards.
  • Stanford wide receivers Elic Ayomanor (109) and Emmett Mosley (101) both finished with over 100 receiving yards. Ayomanor finished with at least 10 catches for the second time this season.
  • Ken Niumatalolo became the first San Jose State coach since Ron Turner in 1992 to win at least seven games in his first season.

What just happened?

EARLY 4Q: San Jose State 27, Stanford 24

San Jose State entered the fourth quarter with all the momentum. Now that momentum belongs to Stanford after coming up with a huge defensive play. Stanford's David Bailey forced a fumble, which resulted in an SJSU OL picking up the football. Stanford LB Jahsiah Galvan picked up the football in the end zone for a defensive touchdown. What a sequence of events.
