Here's what going on Wednesday afternoon in the SEC:

  • Georgia true freshman RB Todd Gurley made a huge impression in Wednesday's scrimmage, running for 58 yards and a touchdown on six carries. Wideout Marlon Brown said Gurley "had some beast runs," notably a 40-yarder he bounced to the outside. Gurley (6-1, 218) is among four backs Georgia could use to replace SEC Freshman of the Year Isaiah Crowell, who was dismissed from the team.
  • Georgia's No. 1 defense got six sacks against the No. 2 offense in Wednesday's scrimmage. Cornelius Washington led the way with three sacks. Coach Mark Richt said "you hope and expect" to get sacks from players like Washington, Jarvis Jones, Alec Ogletree and Bacarri Rambo.
  • Tennessee QB Tyler Bray avoided a guilty plea in a July 4 boating incident, agreeing to make public appearances at schools to promote boater safety. Bray had been charged with reckless operation of a Jet Ski and failure to have a boating education certificate, both misdemeanors.
  • Auburn has enjoyed a terrific summer on the recruiting trail, moving the Tigers into the Top 10 nationally. Auburn's 17 commitments include several elite defensive prospects.
  • Offensive tackle Brandon Hill won't suit up for Alabama this season after he failed to qualify academically. The 6-6, 352-pounder, who's headed for Hargrave Military Academy, is the only academic casualty from Alabama's 26-member signing class.
  • Kentucky coach Joker Phillips said his defensive line will be the team's strength. Junior tackles Donte Rumph and Mister Cobble weigh a combined 645 pounds, and there's experienced depth behind them. Senior ends Collins Ukwu and Taylor Wyndham have combined to start 40 games.
