Georgia vs. Florida State score: Bulldogs obliterate Seminoles to boast biggest blowout in bowl game history

No. 6 Georgia made a resounding statement for its excellence during the 2023 season with a 63-3 drubbing of No. 5 Florida State in the Orange Bowl. The 60-point margin is now the biggest in bowl game history. Georgia, in fact, broke its own record in this case, topping the 58-point win against TCU in last year's College Football Playoff National Championship. In addition to being the biggest win in bowl history, it has also etched itself in to the Orange Bowl record books for the same category.

In a game that was already predicted to be lopsided because of double-digit starters missing the game for Florida State due to opt-outs and injuries, Georgia became the real story for its excellence in efficiency even as they handed the reins over to the backups.

The Bulldogs have recruited so well over the last four years that even when the first-stringers left the game because of the blowout nature of the contest, the backups continued to operate at the same level as the game's starters -- many of whom had Georgia at No. 1 in the country heading into conference championship weekend.

Georgia turned the ball over on downs inside the Florida State 40-yard line on its first offensive possession of the game, then proceeded to score nine straight touchdowns on its next nine possessions. That included multiple touchdown passes from both Carson Beck and Gunner Stockton, as well as multiple touchdown runs from both Kendall Milton and Daijun Edwards. Ten different players recorded receptions in the game and four different players caught touchdowns on a night that certainly cemented the argument that Georgia's 2023 team was among the best in the entire country.

For Florida State, the historic blowout loss adds insult to injury in the wake of a College Football Playoff snub that has had, and will have, a seismic impact on the program's future. Mike Norvell had the players who were available geared up to go in the first half, even making gains against this talented Georgia team in the opening possessions. But every step forward seemed to be met with a step back. Too often, good drives not only ended in turnovers, but with the Bulldogs then taking those turnovers and turning them into deflating touchdowns the other way. At one point, Georgia had three touchdowns across a run of seven offensive plays. That kind of momentum is hard to reverse when a team is already playing at a talent deficit.

A couple of other historical notes about Georgia's blowout win:

  • According to CBS Sports research, this was the worst loss for Florida State, in any game, in program history. The previous mark for Florida State's worst loss was 49 points, which happened twice (1973 and 2018).
  • Georgia had the game in the bag early. In fact, the Bulldogs' 39-point halftime lead was the largest by any team in a bowl game since Auburn's 49-point lead against Purdue at halftime in the 2018 Music City Bowl.

More history for Georgia

The score stands out for its ranking as the biggest blowout in bowl history, but there was some additional record breaking along the way. The Bulldogs' 673 yards of offense set a new mark for the Orange Bowl, which has seen some impressive offensive performances in its history. It was a methodical and balanced approach through all four quarters, with Georgia racking up 301 yards passing and 372 yards rushing while going 5 for 8 on third down and averaging 8.9 yards per play for the game.

Georgia's seniors had a sensational run

By winning on Saturday, Georgia's senior class has now put together a 50-4 record across the last four seasons. That's a new school record for a senior class over four years and has included some pretty impressive highlights along the way. The Bulldogs have won 30 of their last 31 games, and in that stretch captured an Orange Bowl championship twice, along with Peach Bowl championship, and won back-to-back national championships in the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

Florida State fallout

Mike Norvell's greatest challenge as Florida State's coach was managing his team's reaction and response to a shocking snub from the College Football Playoff. He responded by offering support for those players who helped guide the Seminoles back to winning the ACC championship, while also trying to prepare for 2024 on the recruiting trail. Along the way, he had to prepare for the Orange Bowl against one of the most talented rosters in the country while lacking nearly all of the primary offensive and defensive options who helped roll up 13 wins in 2023. You could tell the Seminoles were motivated early, which spoke to the coaching, but the talent difference was too much to overcome.

Now, Florida State will have to live with this defeat and use it as motivation as it looks to return to College Football Playoff contention in 2024, this time in a new system that rewards conference champions with playoff spots.

Georgia hits a 60-burger

4Q: Georgia 63, Florida State 3

That's now nine straight possessions with a touchdown after Gunner Stockton connects with Anthony Evans for a touchdown. Georgia's 60-point lead brings even more focus to the depth of the Bulldogs' roster, which has been bolstered by year-over-year success on the recruiting trail.

Georgia on the way to back-to-back bowl blowouts

3Q: Georgia 56, Florida State 3

One year after Georgia finished its season with a 65-7 win against TCU in the College Football Playoff National Championship, the Bulldogs are putting up a similarly lopsided result in the Orange Bowl, now leading 56-3 against Florida State before the end of the third quarter.

Georgia adds to its total

3Q: Georgia 49, Florida State 3

Georgia took the opening drive of the second half 75 yards down the field, this time a little more methodically with a 10-play drive, but it also ended in a touchdown. That marks seven consecutive drives that have ended in touchdowns for the Bulldogs, who are on the verge of a historic bowl win.

HALFTIME: Georgia 42, Florida State 3

Every time Florida State tries to get a little momentum going, Georgia has not only come up with a defensive stop but followed it with a touchdown that makes the score even more lopsided. The Bulldogs finished the first half with six straight possessions ending in a touchdown, including one sequence that saw Georgia score three touchdowns in just seven offensive plays.

The game is getting out of hand

2Q: Georgia 42, Florida State 3

Florida State had some offensive success just before halftime, but a strip-sack of Brock Glenn keeps the Seminoles out of the end zone for the entirety of the first half. Georgia has now handed Florida State what is clearly its largest deficit of the season (the previous had been 13 points, against North Alabama). For comparison of how wild it is to see these 2023 Seminoles getting beat so handily, the Seminoles allowed just 34 points combined in the first three games of the season and allowed 42 to Georgia in the first half alone.

Five straight touchdown possessions for Georgia

2Q: Georgia 35, Florida State 3

Florida State converted one fourth down to keep a drive alive, but after a review ruled an impressive deep pass incomplete, quarterback Brock Glenn was left with another fourth-down attempt in Georgia territory. The Seminoles were unable to convert it, giving Georgia the ball at its own 38-yard line. It took just five plays and 2:20 of game time for the Dawgs to work right back down the field for a touchdown -- this one on a short pass from Carson Beck to Arian Smith.

Special teams error sets up another quick score for Georgia

2Q: Georgia 28, Florida State 3

Florida State coughs the ball up on the kickoff, and it took Georgia just one play to add to its absurd advantage on the scoreboard as this time its Ladd McConkey running it in for a 27-yard score. The Bulldogs now have 167 yards rushing as a team, averaging 11.9 yards per attempt, and have now scored touchdowns on each of their last four possessions.

Bulldogs bowling right over Florida State's defense

2Q: Georgia 21, Florida State 3

The run defense for Florida State has been exposed in a major way here in the first half. The one-two running back punch of Kendall Milton and Daijun Edwards have combined for 150 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 attempts, with Edwards running in a 15-yard score to put Georgia up by 18. It's a "pick your score' moment in the game for Georgia, which appears to be getting whatever it wants on the ground against the Seminoles.

Florida State hits an explosive play but sputters in the red zone

2Q: Georgia 14, Florida State 3

Florida State quarterback Brock Glenn connected with Kentron Poitier for a 55-yard pass down the field that set up the Seminoles in scoring position. Unfortunately, the Seminoles weren't able to stick it in the end zone and had to settle for a short field goal from the 4-yard line. Glenn had opportunities to hit the score but missed them, and now the Seminoles are left still fighting a double-digit deficit after their best offensive play of the day.

Georgia punches in touchdown No. 2

2Q: Georgia 14, Florida State 0

Kendall Milton needed just one play to add to his big day with a 5-yard touchdown run to extend Georgia's lead to double digits. The Bulldogs are now over 110 yards rushing as a team, averaging 10 yards per rush attempt.

End 1Q: Georgia 7, Florida State 0

Running back Kendall Milton is having himself a day here for a Georgia offense that has really found its rhythm over the last two drives with an up-tempo attack. Milton already has 86 yards on six carries, with 43 of them coming on a run just before the end of the first quarter that has the Bulldogs knocking on the door for a second score. Georgia is currently outgaining Florida State 192 to 30 and has nine first downs while the Seminoles have just two. The Seminoles may be fortunate to end the first quarter only down seven points, but that fortune may be coming to an end based on the last couple of possessions in this game.

Georgia gets on the board first

1Q: Georgia 7, Florida State 0

Florida State's defense had done a good job of stifling the Bulldogs' early offensive efforts, but things started to unravel on a seven-play, 69-yard drive that saw Georgia get out to an early lead. Kendall Milton broke a couple of runs, including the 15-yard score, and Carson Beck completed deep passes to Dillon Bell and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint on a drive that saw the Bulldogs use some tempo to keep the Seminoles on their heels.

Florida State's defense proving tougher than expected

With one sack, two tackles for loss and a turnover on downs in the first 10 minutes of the game, the Seminoles defense is doing its part of the job to help Florida State stay competitive as heavy underdogs against Georgia. Now, it's not like FSU's offense has been able to move the ball much against Georgia, accounting for just 17 total yards on its first two drives, but the start has not been lopsided on both sides of the ball.

Florida State even thinner than expected

While the offense was known to be depleted heading into Saturday's game, Florida State now appears to be without multiple additional starters on defense. Defensive linemen Braden Fiske and Josh Farmer have both been spotted without pads, as has starting linebacker Tatum Bethune. This was an FSU defense that already was missing a lot on the back end, and now it's going to be thin in the front seven as well.

Orange Bowl pick, prediction

I think this is going to be as much about Georgia as it is about Florida State's lack of stars; the Bulldogs will get to choose their own score based on their level of execution. The Seminoles who are on the field are playing for pride in their home state and going to provide some resistance, especially early, but over four quarters this looks like a Bulldogs blowout win. Pick: Georgia -14.5

UGA looks to extend multiple streaks

The Orange Bowl will be Georgia's 27th consecutive bowl appearance, a run that dates back to 1997 and represents the nation's longest active streak. On that note, the Bulldogs are looking to win their seventh consecutive postseason game dating back to 2019. The bowl game also provides an opportunity for the 2023 senior class to break the school record for wins in a four-season run, held by last year's seniors of the 2022 class that went 49-5. Currently, the 2023 seniors have a 49-4 record across the last four seasons.

Key FSU players missing

While Georgia is largely operating at full strength for the Orange Bowl -- tight end Brock Bowers (ankle) is the biggest question mark -- the same can't be said for Florida State. For a second straight game, the Seminoles will be turning to third string quarterback Brock Glenn after backup Tate Rodemaker -- Jordan Travis' initial replacement following his season-ending injury -- entered the transfer portal. On the opt-out front, defensive lineman Jared Verse, tight end Jaheim Bell and wide receivers Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson are among the notables. Nothing is going to come easy for coach Mike Norvell's group against the two-time reigning national champion Bulldogs.

FSU has chance to make statement

Nothing will fully erase the sting of being left out from the College Football Playoff as an undefeated Power Five champion, but not all is lost for Florida State as kickoff nears for the Orange Bowl. If a wildly shorthanded Seminoles squad upsets Georgia -- it would be FSU's third win over an SEC opponent in 2023 -- then there's little doubt that FSU could have held its own with those who did crack the field. It would also be a second bowl victory for the ACC over the SEC in as many days after Clemson beat Kentucky on Friday in the Gator Bowl. When it comes to non-CFP teams playing in bowl games, the Seminoles have as much to prove as anyone.
