Why Fresno State can cover

Fresno State has one of the best running backs in the conference in Jordan Mims. A sixth-year senior from East Palo Alto, Calif., Mims ranks third in the Mountain West in rushing yards per game (89.1) and yards per carry (4.95). On Friday he faces a UNLV defense that has had difficulty stopping the run, ranking 93rd in the country in rush defense (163.7 yards per game).

In addition, the Bulldogs face a Rebels offense that has struggled scoring points recently. Over the last four games, UNLV has averaged just 11.3 points per game. Only New Mexico (10.5 points per game) has averaged fewer over that time span.

Why UNLV can cover

UNLV has quarterback Doug Brumfield back in the lineup. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound sophomore led the Rebels to a 4-1 start this season before being knocked out of the San Jose State game with an injury. He missed the next two games but returned last week and took every snap. He leads all Mountain West quarterbacks in passing efficiency (145.9).

In addition, UNLV faces a Fresno State defense that does not force turnovers. The Bulldogs have just 10 takeaways this season, which ranks 10th in the conference and 100th in the nation. By contrast, the Rebels rank third in the conference and 39th in the nation in turnovers forced (15).
