College football scores, rankings, highlights: Michigan hammers Michigan State as USC, Ole Miss escape

No. 4 Michigan started slow in its annual rivalry showdown with Michigan State, but the Wolverines never relented while mauling their way to a 29-7 victory. The win stopped a two-game losing streak for the Wolverines in the series and improved them to 8-0 (5-0 Big Ten) ahead of Tuesday's release of the first College Football Playoff Rankings.

Blake Corum ran for 177 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries and caught a touchdown as well during another standout performance in an increasingly memorable season. Defensively, the Wolverines held the Spartans to seven straight possessions without a score after Michigan State took a 7-3 lead late in the first quarter.

On a day when No. 9 Oklahoma State and No. 10 Wake Forest became highly ranked teams to suffer their second loss, No. 10 USC and No. 15 Ole Miss avoided the same fate with huge offensive performances. Quinshon Judkins ran for 205 yards to pace the Rebels in a 31-28 win at Texas A&M. At 8-1, Ole Miss is enjoying its best start since 1962, while Texas A&M fell to 3-5 with its first four-game losing streak since 2005.

USC outlasted Arizona 45-37 behind a 411-yard passing performance from quarterback Caleb Williams, who totaled five touchdowns through the air. The Trojans allowed 543 yards but survived anyway as they only punted once in their return to action after a bye week.

Ole Miss clinches it

Final: Ole Miss 31, Texas A&M 28

The Rebels stay in the SEC West hunt with a good win at Texas A&M. Quinshon Judkins ran for 205 yards on 34 carries, and Jaxson Dart threw for three TDs while running for another 95 yards. Texas A&M falls to 3-5 (1-4 SEC). Conner Weigman played well in his first career start with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Good day for the Aggies offensively but not enough.

Michigan dominates

Final: Michigan 29, Michigan State 7

It wasn't the type of explosive, dominant and altogether impressive type of win. But it was a big win over a rival that didn't really feature much drama. Michigan ran the football — another big game from Blake Corum — and didn't air it out. The ceiling change many expected amid the transition from McNamara to McCarthy hasn't really happened, but McCarthy kept the operation running again tonight.

USC survives

Final: USC 45, Arizona 37

USC recovers an onside kick with 1:24 remaining and is able to run the clock out from there. The Trojans were pressed tonight on the road against an improved Arizona team, but this was a good bounce-back following a crushing loss at Utah two weeks ago. Plenty of defensive issues to correct after Arizona racks up 543 yards. But with Caleb Williams over 400 yards passing with 5 TDs and Travis Dye over 100 yards rushing on the ground, it's hard to be overly upset. This was kind of what we expected USC to be.

Wolverines running hard

Start 4Q: Michigan 19, Michigan State 7

Michigan State is suffering under the weight of a Michigan rushing attack that is leaning hard on the Spartans as the fourth quarter begins. Michigan had to settle for a couple of field goals in the third quarter, but the Spartans couldn't move the football and are on the brink of exhaustion.

Ole Miss responds

End 3Q: Ole Miss 24, Texas A&M 14

After trailing 14-7 early, Ole Miss has scored 17 unanswered to take a 24-14 lead on Texas A&M entering the fourth quarter. A win here keeps Ole Miss in the SEC West race ahead of a big showdown with Alabama. Texas A&M was hot early with true freshman Connner Weigman starting at QB, but the Aggies have cooled off dramatically.

Arizona threatening

Late 3Q: USC 31, Arizona 29

Arizona just drew within two points on a Michael Wiley touchdown run late in the third quarter. Jayden De Laura's 2-point conversion pass was unsuccessful, otherwise we'd be tied. Looks like some more fourth quarter drama could be headed USC's way. Caleb Williams and the offense have been great tonight, but the defense has not been great.

Vols in command

Tennessee 37, Kentucky 6

Things are trending toward a top-3 matchup between unbeaten Georgia and unbeaten Tennessee in Athens next week. The Vols are holding up their end of the bargain at home against Kentucky with a huge lead late in the third quarter. The Vols are getting things done on the ground tonight in a big way. The injury status of Jalin Hyatt will be something to monitor moving forward after he left the game in apparent pain in the third quarter.

Michigan in a battle

Start 3Q: Michigan 13, Michigan State 7

The Spartans are proving to be a tough out in Ann Arbor. Michigan leads 245-189 in total yards and 13-8 in first downs but are up just 13-7. Michigan gets the football to start the second half, and you can expect a heavy dose of the run. As per usual with these Wolverines, the ground game has been there priority on offense as Corum and Edwards have already combined for 100 yards on the ground.

Big play

Early 3Q: USC 24, Arizona 16

Caleb Williams just hit Kyle Ford over the middle for a 70-yard gainer that set up a Williams to Tahj Washington touchdown strike on first and goal. These numbers are going to be silly for Williams by game's end as he's already at 319 yards and three touchdowns. The Trojans are going to need it, too, as Arizona has proven a worthy foe thus far.

Texas A&M looks good

Late 2Q: Texas A&M 14, Ole Miss 7

Relative to how its looked oftentimes this season, Texas A&M looks really good against Ole Miss. Conner Weigman is making his first career start, and the 5-star QB is dealing thus far. He's 8 of 9 for 98 yards and two TDs. With Devon Achane running wild (14 rushes for 113 yards), this is as competent as Texas A&M has looked offensively against anyone all season.

Michigan?

Start 2Q: Michigan State 7, Michigan 3

Slow start for the Wolverines, who allowed Payton Thorne to make some plays in the first quarter. A Michigan fumble on its first possession didn't help matters. The Spartans need some breaks to have a chance here, but their belief should be on the rise after that start.

Caleb Williams on fire

2Q: USC 17, Arizona 10

Caleb Williams is 14 of 18 for 168 yards and two touchdowns with most of the second quarter remaining for USC. Star receiver Jordan Addison is out tonight, but you wouldn't know it from Williams' stat line. He's balling out so far. Arizona is hanging tough, though and has a couple nice early scoring drives of its own. Fun game so far.

Wrapping up the afternoon

Georgia 42, Florida 20: The Gators lost the turnover battle 3-0, which turned a beatdown into an interesting game as Florida crept within 28-20 late in the third quarter. But from there, the Bulldogs turned it on late.
Oregon 42, Cal 24: The Ducks got off to a slow start but covered the spread and stayed in prime position for an appearance in the Pac-12 title game.
Kansas State 48, Oklahoma State 0: LOL
Louisville 48, Wake Forest 21: When it rains for Wake Forest, it pours. The Demon Deacons committed turnovers on five straight possessions in the third quarter and promptly threw a pick-six a few possessions into the fourth. Scott Satterfield's squad is now 5-3.
Illinois 26, Nebraska 9: The Illini really are going to win the Big Ten West, aren't they? Nebraska played the second half without Casey Thompson, but this is nonetheless an impressive road win for Illinois.
UCF 25, Cincinnatti 21: Well, that's two losses for the Bearcats this season and one huge win for Gus Malzahn and the Knights. It's possible there could be a rematch in the AAC title game.
Missouri 23, South Carolina 10: South Carolina's stint in the AP poll may not last long.

Oregon breathing room

Start 4Q: Oregon 28, Cal 10

Oregon is doing just fine after trailing early at Cal. The Ducks have racked up 455 yards through three quarters and have overcome a pair of Bo Nix interceptions with the help of a defense that has intercepted two passes of its own and a special teams unit that produced this blocked punt. Nix is 23 of 30 for 326 yards and a couple of TDs. Another big day for the Auburn reclamation project.

Wake Forest in trouble

Late 3Q: Louisville 34, Wake Forest 14

Wake Forest just had a fourth consecutive drive end in a turnover, and Louisville quickly responded with a 9-yard touchdown run from Malik Cunningham. What a disaster for the Demon Deacons, who are gifting Scott Satterfield the momentum that his coaching tenure needs. Because of a 4-0 turnover margin, the Cardinals are on the verge of toppling a top-10 opponent at home.

Nebraska's QB situation

Chubba Purdy begins the second half at quarterback for Nebraska after the injury to Casey Thompson. Initially, it was Logan Smothers who came on for Thompson in the second quarter. Either way, the Cornhuskers will be trying to execute a comeback from 11 points down in the second half against one of the Big Ten's best defenses while using an inexperienced quarterback.

Wake ahead in a close one

Start 3Q: Wake Forest 14, Louisville 13

Louisville leads Wake Forest 264-185 in total yards and once had a 13-0 lead on the scoreboard. But as the third quarter approaches, it's the Demon Deacons who are ahead. Wake had consecutive 9-play 70+ yard scoring drives in the second quarter to get back in the game. No run game for Wake Forest, but Sam Hartman is 10 of 14 for 148 yards and a TD. Malik Cunningham was on fire early, but the Louisville offense slowed down as the first half progressed.

AAC battle

Half: UCF 10, Cincinnati 6

Big AAC battle in Orlando, where the Golden Knights lead 10-6 despite three straight punts to close the first half. There have been a total of eight punts so far. Bearcats get the football to begin the second half and could use some yards on the ground. Just 1.2 yards per carry for Cincinnati in the first half.

Kansas State crushing Pokes

Half: Kansas State 35, Oklahoma State 0

Wildcats quarterback Will Howard is putting together an unbelievable performance to crush a top 10 opponent at home. Howard has thrown for 224 yards and four touchdowns in the first half, including a perfect toss to running back Deuce Vaughn on the goal line. Vaughn has 121 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns on his own to lead what has been a dominant effort. Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders has 84 of the Cowboys' 97 total yards, but OSU has failed to get any consistent offensive production. No receivers have multiple catches.

Illinois feeling good

Half: Illinois 20, Nebraska 9

The Illini are two quarters away from taking a firm grasp on the Big Ten West after scoring 14 unanswered to end the first half in Lincoln. It was 9-6 Nebraska, but then Casey Thompson was injured while throwing an interception in the middle of the second quarter. Illinois took advantage of the short field created by the INT and then closed the half with an impressive 11-play touchdown drive. Tommy Devito was 12 of 13 for 143 yards and two TDs in the half and Chase Brown has 80 yards on 15 carries with a TD and this nice receiving TD.

Oregon ahead

Late 2Q: Oregon 14, Cal 10

It's been a slow start for the Ducks, but they just took a 14-10 lead at Cal on Bo Nix's 1-yard TD run to cap an 8-play drive. A previous Oregon drive into the red zone ended with a Nix interception. Bears have moved the football reasonably well thus far thanks to a couple big pass plays to J. Michael Sturdivant and Jeremiah Hunter. But they're going to need continued turnover luck to stay in this one.

Insane catch from Brock Bowers

Early 2Q: Georgia 21, Florida 0

The best offense always beats a great defense. There is absolutely nothing Florida's defender could have done on this play. Brock Bowers is just that good. Perfect coverage and it's still six points for the Bulldogs on a 73-yard score. Georgia is absolutely rolling early in Jacksonville.

Nebraska goes ahead

Mid 2Q: Nebraska 9, Illinois 6

Casey Thompson just hit Travis Vokolek for a 56-yard touchdown to put Nebraska ahead 9-6 with 9:38 left in a first half that has featured two missed extra points. The Cornhuskers are moving the football pretty well against a normally stout Illinois defense. On the other side, Illinois quarterback Tommy Devito is 8 for 8 with 102 yards and a TD in the earlygoing as the Illini have turned to the air for production with Nebraska focusing on Chase Brown. Devito hit Isaiah Williams for a 46-yard score on the first possession.

'Cats out to quick start

2Q: Kansas State 14, Oklahoma State 0

Despite missing starting quarterback Adrian Martinez, the Wildcats have gotten out to an early lead over the Cowboys. Kansas State quarterback Will Howard connected for a 38-yard touchdown pass, and running back Deuce Vaughn broke away for a 62-yard touchdown. The Cowboys have been struggling to run the ball, averaging just 3.2 yards per carry with Dominic Richardson out of the lineup.

Seminoles impressive

Final: Florida State 41, Georgia Tech 16

The Seminoles will a chance at returning to the AP Top 25 on Sunday after crushing Georgia Tech today. The Yellow Jackets picked up a meaningless TD on the game's final play, otherwise this one would have been even more lopsided. 642 yards for Florida State, including 396 for Jordan Travis through the air and 111 on the ground for Trey Benson. The Seminoles were 9 of 15 on third downs and had 10 different players catch passes.

Final: TCU 41, West Virginia 31

TCU's defense came up big down the stretch the get key stops and send the Frogs to a 10-point victory. Ohio State turns it on

Late 4Q: Ohio State 44, Penn State 31

The final score may not reflect how much Ohio State was pushed today, but this fourth quarter has taken on a life of its own, and it hasn't been pretty for Penn State. Since surging ahead 21-16 with 9:26 remaining, the Nittany Lions have been outscored 28-3 in the handful of minutes that have followed. Three interceptions from Sean Clifford will leave Penn State wondering "what if" but give credit to the Buckeyes. They got big plays from their defense, didn't turn the football over and are going to come away from one of their toughest tests in great shape looking like a near-lock for the CFP. Notre Dame rolls

Final: Notre Dame 41, Syracuse 24

The roller-coaster experience which has been Marcus Freeman's first season at Notre Dame continues with an impressive road win for the Fighting Irish, who are now 5-3 and winners of five of their past six entering a home showdown with Clemson next week. Brandon Joseph set the tone on the first play from scrimmage with his 29-yard interception return for a touchdown. While Carlos Del Rio-Wilson did briefly spark the Syracuse offense late in the third quarter following the injury to Garrett Shrader, the Orange were eventually doomed by a blocked punt that set up an Audric Estime touchdown. He ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns for Notre Dame.
