The race was tight for No. 1 among the Class of 2022 college football recruiting rankings entering Wednesday, but Texas A&M sat firmly in the driver's seat and cruised to that designation on National Signing Day. Upon the commitment of five-star defensive lineman Shemar Stewart, the Aggies locked up not only the top-ranked class in this cycle but also the top-rated group of all time.

Stewart's pledge gave Texas A&M seven five-star commitments in this class as coach Jimbo Fisher eyes finally getting his program over the hump, not only in the SEC but also in the national race with a College Football Playoff berth. It was an astounding accomplishment for the Aggies, but not one entirely unexpected given the way they have been recruiting throughout this entire cycle.

Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State and Texas round out the top five exiting the day. Meanwhile, major programs with new coaches like Florida, LSU, Miami, Oklahoma and USC were attempting to close their transitional classes strong. Among that group, only the Sooners entered the day in the top 10.

There are still a few commitments that will trickle in through the end of the week, so some fluctuation remains possible.
