West Virginia QB Geno Smith won his second award of the week on Wednesday when he was named the Davey O'Brien Quarterback of the Week. Smith was also named the Big 12 offensive player of the week on Tuesday.
Smith's Week 1 performance has garnered a lot of attention and made sure his name is in the Heisman conversation -- it's never too early to talk the Heisman, right? His numbers were eye-opening, as he completed 32 of 36 passes for 323 yards and four touchdowns in West Virginia's 69-34 win against Marshall. He also ran for 65 yards and a touchdown.
- On the other side of the ball, the Moutaineers aren't freaking out about their subpar defensive performance against Marshall, Mike Casazza of the Charleston Daily Mail writes.
- K-State QB Collin Klein's passing stats could be the deciding factor against Miami, Kellis Robinett of the Kansas City Star reports. The Hurricanes allowed 441 passing yards in their opener against Boston College.
- No one in the Oklahoma media knew his name a few weeks ago. After scoring a touchdown in his first game as a Sooner, TE Brannon Green is getting noticed, Jason Kersey of The Oklahoman writes.
- Kinnick Stadium could be the difference when Iowa State travels to Iowa on Saturday, Andrew Logue of the Des Moines Register writes. The Cyclones lost four straight at Kinnick by an average of 14.3 points.
- Oklahoma State has a great scout on its roster this week in preparation for Arizona. Former Arizona backup quarterback Daxx Garman is offering insight to the OSU coaches, Gina Mizell of The Oklahoman writes.
- The Longhorns have struggled to find a role for 5-foot-9, 175-pound RB D.J. Monroe throughout his career. After a solid showing against Wyoming -- 36 yards and a TD on five carries -- it appears the Longhorns are figuring out how to get Monroe in space, Mark Rosner of the Austin American-Statesman reports.
- TCU coach Gary Patterson said what every coach is programmed to say this week: TCU is not taking Grambling State lightly, Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
- Kansas coaches believe LB Ben Heeney has all the attributes to be a great linebacker so long as they can convince Heeney to slow down, Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star writes.
